Sorry if a repost. Didn't finish loading at work.

So far Netshare and SMS are as expected. Backup still takes friggin' forever, maybe just a little better...

Update problems

So I had NetShare, and unfortunately when I backed up my iPhone before updating to 2.0.1, it either didn't fully create the backup first (which WILL NOT install properly for me), or it just messed up. Either way, I lost NetShare and had to restore, and the backup I created won't install so it is completely gone. Now if I restore back to the backup with NetShare on it it just freezes and does nothing. Any ideas on what I can do to get it back?

I'm pretty sure this is new in 2.0.1. Now you can sync contacts from your google contact list or your yahoo! contacts. I've been waiting for this one! I hate using MS outlook.

GPS not working?

If you find your GPS isn't working after the update - turn your phone off and on. It seemed to sort mine out! :)

GPS DOES NOT WORK IN 2.0.1

if you use GPS often, do not update as it is not working in 2.0.1

i just rang the apple store regent street and they said to come into store and they will replace it
Google maps was saying that I am still at home, when in fact I'm at work right now. I reset my phone and now its picking up the correct location with GPS lock. I'll leave the phone alone and try it again later, to see if its still working.

I recommend you turn off and on your iPhone before heading to the Apple store. You may save yourself the trip. Oh, and if you do exchange the phone, *MAKE SURE YOUR SMS PLAN IS STILL IN EFFECT!.* AT&T here in the States deactivated my 200 SMS plan when I exchanged my faulty unit and neglected to tell me, and now they expect me to pay additional fees. The problem got resolved, but be alert.

I was looking through my saved pictures, the (screenshots) I have taken of my device, and there were a bunch of pictures that werent there before, like a picture of notebook paper, grid paper, an hangman template etc. Is this included in the update and if so what is the purpose? Will someone check photos on their device to see if these are showing up in your saved photos?

No luck for me.

GPS not locking in on me
Backup takes FOREVER still!!

Text lag is NOT fixed for me.....jeez....

I'm starting to really hate the fruit.

Anyone on the 1st gen iphone get the 2.0.1 update? Whats the results?

My post at the top of page 28 is also a 1st Gen...Did you read it?

One thing I need to add...When plugging into my computer, the delay of it showing in iTunes has been cut in half. It takes about 3-5 secs to show instead of 10 or more. Mine is set to manual sync...got rid of auto long ago-im in charge not the computer.

There are lots of 1st gen posters...look in their signatures.

Good Luck

If you synced it with iTunes prior to the update, NetShare should be sitting peacefully in the applications library in iTunes. You can restore the phone to factory settings then set it up as a new phone, instead of the backup. You'll lose settings, app saved data, sms and voicemail, but at least the phone is back. And NetShare should be there as well.

It seems nullriver finally got a reply from Apple. There is an automatic email system on both sides which caused some messages to be lost in transit (or at least that's Apple's excuse). They say they're working with Apple to get NetShare back on the app store, but to what extent that means I don't know. Perhaps it will only be limited to countries with providers that allow tethering on their data plans.

Mixed feelings at the moment but mostly positive...

After being updated about 9 hours ago and having had about 4 hours usage...

Battery still good
SMS much improved
Safari much improved
Contacts ... initially speedy is now slowing down

Little story re GPS.... just went to the other side of Bristol (i live in Bath) to collect something from courier company.... got near the place and kinda got a bit lost ... pulled out iphone ... went into maps and entered the post cost of the company .... then noticed blue pulse near where i needed to be ... GPS was picking up my location exactly with the iphone in my hand in the car .... so i put it on the seat and just kept glancing at it while driving towards destination and it tracked perfectly....

Bodes well for turn-by-turn true GPS nav.... GPS chip in iphone seems pretty solid to me .... and MUCH quicker to lock and more stable a track than my old N95's

Thoughts on Signal Strength Etc

First, just to say everything went perfectly on my update, it took an hour to back up after the update but then backups were much faster - which is what I would expect so im happy.

I was thinking about the Phone Signal Strength and contradictory findings from people. Back in my windoes mobile days (pre 11th July basically :D )
I would try different rom versions on my HTC Touch and Hermes and could also update / downgrade to various radio versions - there were quite a variety and some worked better than others often depending on which network you were on, but also varying by area - some were better in weak signal areas, some in strong signal areas - and battery live would vary based on these.

With the iPhone im guessing there is basically one rom, and we are all effectively on the same base operating system revisions and im guessing only really 2 hardware types pre 3g and 3g, so he only variance (other than faulty hardware) is really the network you connect to and your location too.

I havent seen much mention of this - is everyone in the UK on O2 in this forum ? or can we split up the good / bad experience by O2 uk / ATnT US etc ?

For what its worth im in the UK, County Durham on O2(not much alternative) and whilst signal strengh isnt great in many places it doesnt seem any different - I twitter with locals and no-one locally has been complaining of problems...

Just a few thoughts.

Stephen

p.s. Maps finds me perfectly - on edge and 3g - and even better with gps - drove across the county and back with it on today and no problems whatsoever - unless you count the dead area with no signal where the maps didnt load but thats nothing new.

I have no idea whether the new update is any good.....I've tried downloading it five times, and despite a perfectly fine connection, I've been unable to do it. The last effort took over an hour and a half, and as it was finishing, despite not losing my connection, the f*cking thing terminated.

Anyone know where I can get a copy of the .ipsw file so that I can just manually install this ish?!? I'm getting irrationally pissed off here...

Overall it does seem a little snappier and the keyboard lag for me is pretty much fixed (every now and again it creeps up). But I am still having pretty bad lag when opening the basic applications like Contacts or SMS. With Contacts, it is brutal. It will take 4-6 seconds just to open and then, when the names finally do appear, the screen is frozen for another 3-4 seconds before I can scroll or search. Waiting 10 seconds to look up a contact is entirely unacceptable. SMS is not nearly as bad but still a good 3-4 seconds just for the application to open. Is anyone still having these lag issues after updating? Are there any fixes people are aware of? Is it possible that the number of contacts affects how long it takes? I sync with Outlook so I have well over 2000 contacts in the phone. Could that be part of the problem? Wouldn't be good if that's the issue as most business users sync to their Outlook and have a ton of contacts.

Ditto.

FWIW, I also did a manual backup on a PC that I had not backed-up to before -- 4 min., 20 sec. (10 apps).

It's taking soooooo long to download. 6 hours left?!!

WTF??

Can this be downloaded as standalone? Any tips for a faster download

Where are you seeing that? I checked the sounds pref and the alarm sound lists and don't see it anywhere. Are you referring to alarms or ringtones? Does it pull it from your iPod song list? Custom ringtones have been around for awhile if that's what you're talking about.

"Has engine else noticed..." - are you sure you're in a proper state of mind? Maybe you just imagined it all.

maybe dump the 56k modem and go broadband? j/k.

ours downloaded in less than 10 mins each (2 iphones on same network downloading at the same time).

Since the update, I've had some unexplained network activity (the little spinning icon near the signal strength). I've had it twice on the home screen where it's stayed on for a good few minutes, and in the mail app, it's happened, but it had already finished checking my mail, and was just spinning. I had to reset when it happened in mail, though I'll try a force quit of the mail app if it happens again.

Has anyone else had this, either on the new 2.0.1 or 2.0?
