I have been playing with my phone for the last 3 hours after the 2.0.2 update....It is much better...I am trying to get to lag or slow down...no dice...

Safari is faster, the contacts app is much faster...the accellerometer is much faster and precise. The Iphone 3G is beginning to get really good. Apple keep up the good work. Also I have over 20 apps.

I just started getting into the podcasts...sync some bikini driving school and garage 419...nice...The Iphone 3G is tight...After 2 weeks I am happy!

I can not wait till 2.1 or 2.2 comes out..

Just think what the Iphone will be like 3 to 4 years from now?

Guess you need to go get a samsung instinct.
Good luck. iPhone makes that device look like a razr v3.

But in all seriousness, I haven't seen any Samsung Instinct threads that read:

"My GPS doesn't work"
"I have had to restore my phone x amount of times"
"My web browser keeps crashing".

Etc......

Mine has downloaded and installed the new firmwire in like 15 min. It wasn't that bad than I expected.

Also, I feel that the lag in the texting is gone now :)

Ok, after 3 hours and 20 minutes 2.0.2 finally installed, (That was one long ass backup!) everything seems to be working fine (I am still running with iTunes 7.7.0.43 as well).

Etc......

That's because the percentage of people who own an Instinct and the percentage of people who own iPhones is a hundred times different. I can't remember how many thousands bought an Instinct in a few months compared to the million 3G iPhones that were sold on that July 11th weekend alone.

well the other day a friend of mine called me and proclaimed:

"I think I hate my phone"

He called me a week earlier and told. Show his instinct was better than iPhone because it has turn by turn gps and voice dialing and a week later he was missing the iPod portion (he had an iPod touch I helped teach him to use which was stolen) and the iPod-esque interface of the iPhone.

To some people the crap we talk about here is a joke. We are such a group where for like 3 pages of this thread people were freaking out just bcause a 250 meg firmware update was being pushed out.

Don't getme wrong, I am as excited at the updates, but most people accept electronics and gadgets "as is" and don't get as obsessive over little things as we do.

I am 100% as guilty of that. I was really pissed off with my iPhone and called apple today this morning. I have an appointment with the apple store to orrow because of all the crap that was wrong with 2.01.

Call me very lucky but so far the update has solved my problems. All we need now is better power management. Honestly, this device needs better battery life than it has.

Im so sick of people saying your phone as faster because of the update!!!!

It faster because after the update your phone rebooted. I reboot mine every day on 1.0.1 and have no lag and it is rock solid. The only time it slows down is when I don't reboot it. I leave it on EDGE because the 3g sucks. That is what I want to see fixed.

Well you are wrong. Basic functions such as me typing this message out should NOT be laggy after a restart, and for many people on the old firmware this was the case - even after a hard restart which should clear all caches etc.

I am myselfnsick of know it all people telling me the issue was just all on my end because I was not rebooting my phone on a regular basis.

Don't people see where the logic falls out of that statement?

BECAUSE I WAS NOT REBOOTING MY PHONE ON A DAILY BASIS.

... Yeah, just shouldn't have to do that daily.

Hell, we all gave microsoft such a hard time because windows 95 and 98 required frequent reboots, now people act like this is acceptable for the iPhone???

2.0.2 bricked my iPhone i think =<

After i downloaded and tried to install 2.0.2 it said it failed for some unknown error and needed to restore because my iphone was in recovery mode. So i tried to restore 4 times but it gives me an error saying unable to restore for unknown reason(6)..... zzz going to apple store tomorrow to see if they can fix it or give me a new iPhone again.

Well, after having 2.0.2 for a few hours now, i see nothing different from before...3G is the same speed (i usually get around 1100 - 1200 kbps), mininal lag from contacts/SMS, Safari is the same...everything is working great and normal, no upsides or downsides i guess. I was EXTREMELY surprised by how little time it took, from download to upgrade...all within 30 minutes, and i have an 8 GB iPhone with 950 songs, 2 full length films, 50 photos, 64 apps and only 523 mb free.

I will note that the backup speed during the update process took about 6-8 minutes, prior to this the 2.0.1 update backup took me about 90+ minutes, and normal backups took 50 min. - 1 hr. 30 min. I am going to do another backup tonight before i sleep to see if 2.0.2 actually made a difference considering the amount of stuff i have in my phone....

I have no idea what most of this post says, but I feel pretty confident that none of us like the fact that things are temporarily snappier after a reboot and bog down sometime after. I rarely rebooted with 1.1.4 on the 1st gen iphone. I do it daily now.

I got no sense that the richard371 was making any claim that rebooting was acceptable. I think he's like me, a little tired of seeing people snap to judgement about how rosy the world is after a .1 update.

So it looks like its the same ol story as 2.0/2.0.1, the lag is still there amongst other issues which is just plain ridiculous. In all my time with Apple i haven't seen this, 2 FW updates and practically nothing's changed

Looks like i'll still be staying with 1.1.4 yet again, also NOT upgrading to iPhone 3G seems to have been a good decision

dont know why many people are complaining that there is too much lag in texting etc... i am having no issues what so ever, the update went flawlessly in less than 15-20 min and i was ready to use my phone :).

I noticed a change to the App Store updating procedure......

Before:

If you had more than 1 update to your installed apps you could press an "Update All" button and it would download them and install them sequentially.

While updating an app the App Store was pretty much useless. You could hardly even get into the App Store and whem you did it was very slow, if not empty.

Now (with the 2.0.2 update):

The "Update All" button is gone, so you have to look at each app and choose to update.

You can now browse the store while an app is updating, not only to go back and choose your next update but you can also browse around the store with no lag.

That's all I've noticed so far :)

I had just started a thread about how much I hated this problem before, and how I'm still having problems with 2.0.2, but the more I try it, the more I think that it actually has improved, because now I can browse the store for most of the time that an app is installing or updating (couldn't do it at ALL before), but there is still a 30 second period where the store becomes completely unresponsive. It is during the last 30 seconds of the install it seems. I'm not sure if you have to exit the store and re-enter it to see the problem or not. I keep trying to test it but I exit the store to check the install status each time (thinking that it might be finished and I saw no freezes), but each time it's still installing and I end up re-entering the store and soon after (it gets to the end of the install process) it freezes up.

Has anyone gone to Apple?

I have a first generation iPhone with more than 60 applications on it, but almost no music (5.75 GB of free space). The backup process lasted more than two hours and was slightly over halfway done. I found a note on this forum suggesting that I would do better if my phone was plugged directly into my iMac instead of my hub. I yanked the plug and started over. As it turns out, I have USB 2.0 Hub, so I have not done anything by starting over but to double the time it will take. I'm going to sleep. :(

Anyone with the backups that take more than a half hour, have you gone to the Apple store to ask them why this is happening? I'm lucky with only 4 minute back-ups but if i had to wait 3 hours to be able to use my phone, i'd go out of my mind. It just shouldn't be accepted.

Learn what a true bricking means.

Try different cables and USB ports.

Lag in texting is still there, but if I load up Safari, then go back to texting the lag goes away everytime. Not the most ideal fix...but.

SMS lag is back for me, along with contacts lag. My contacts list shows up instantly, but takes almost 4 seconds before I can start scrolling.

Same for me. I really wish the lag was gone. Mine is 3 seconds minimum. That's not a lot but it is frustrating and I don't think there should be any lag.

I have a love hate relationship with my iPhone.

why do you assume because it didnt happen to you it doesnt exist for anyone, do you think a lot of people are posting this for their amusement. It's not uncommon to get a text, hit reply and when SMS opens the texting is like one key per 5 seconds like everything is in slow motion. You have to close SMS and restart it to fix it.
