Why is it so hard for Apple to say what "bugs" they fixed? Every other software out there does that, including the apps in the App Store.

Maybe they're not 100% confident that each particular bug has been fixed.

"We think this update has fixed the keyboard lag issue, the 3G call dropping issue..."

well this was a rather pointless update. not only does my phone not find a 3G network to latch on to, it now has a fondness for telling me no reception. everything else remained the same.

if rumors are to be believed, how complicated is it to dial up the sensitivity on the 3G radio?!

The more I think about it, the more it seems like 2.0.2 is just a big fat 200mb reboot placebo to placate the shareholders and the press. Same for 2.0.1.

Mine doesn't say sync either this time but it seems to be working.

Ok, I just wanted to be sure. Mine is super slow in backing up. Mine has been backing up for over 20 minutes and the status bar is only between the "n" and the "g" in the word "backing" just above it.

Some companies like to keep it a secret for some reason. Tivo is the same way with their software updates.

No changes for me that I can tell. On a side note I have noticed that I get more 3G bars when connected by USB to my Macbook Pro (3 bar).....when I disconnect it goes back down to 1 bar or Edge. Anyone else notice this?

yeah, i really hate to say but i agree. i really wish i could figure out what exactly Apple considers "important" on their things of list to-do. no one can figure it out.

i thought i was impressed by Bill Gates' cross examination by the Attorney General but i think Apple's vagueness is beginning to top that.

i have read that the 3g frequency that is being used is a higher frequency than what the edge network is on...the higher the frequency, the less penetration that frequency has. basically the umts signal cant go as far and through as many walls as the edge signal can!

as far as my uprading goes, it took about 30 minutes max. (inculding backup). i have 2 pages of extra apps and an almost full iphone 8gb.

Your understanding is incorrect. Higher frequencies can penetrate dense objects better than lower frequencies, but they cannot travel as great a distance as lower frequencies.

Sadly, after the update my Safari is NOT snappier. Quite the opposite. It is completely frozen. Stuck on a login page, and there's no response to anything touchscreen. The Home button works to get me back to my home screen, but thats it. Every time I open safari it just goes back to that same login page, stuck, frozen.

No other discernible changes. Wha??

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)

finally google map is working correctly.

Not mine, still showing Burbank while I am the Sacramento Airport:confused::confused:

Wow, that was incredibly insightful. It looks like you've answered all of his questions and we can all power down our computers now that you're on the case!

SHIFTLife - Thanks for the reply.
I had to end up killing the iTunes process on my laptop. Luckily a friend had their HP laptop with them. I ran a restore with the 2.0.2 update on that and it brought the phone back.
Now doing contents restore from the backup I did on my PC just before the update. Uggh. Whether it is just my laptop or not, Apple should do better QA on their updates.

Thanks again.

NO!!!! Not again. I just updated to 2.0.2 and now I am back to where I was with 2.0.1, it kills my apps and Ipod media. Now I will have to go back and delete all the apps again and bring it back. This is such a PITA it isn't funny. I should have just stayed with 2.0.1. I don't think they fixed a damn thing.

Anyone know where the backups are kept in Itunes (in Windows) so I can restore to where I was before it tried to re-backup and mess up a perfectly good backup?

Sorry to read all the trouble 2.02 has caused people.

For me it has helped; Safari hasn't crashed yet and the contacts lag is virtually gone (mine was really bad, was 10 seconds whenever I switched groups). Haven't experienced the typing lag yet either.

No change here. 2-3 bars EDGE, and "Locate Me" had me in Boca Raton, FL, and I'm in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area...

heh - I just got home with a brand new 3g, locate me has me in New Jersey, I'm in Michigan. Tried with wifi on and off. Downloading update now.

Consider this possibility: Apple updated nothing.
Can you say "placebo?"

Seriously - the idea that Apple releases something - anything - to make it appear they are "working on it" (even if Apple knows there is nothing they can fix with software) is not out of the realm of possibility. Reminds me of the ideas discussed in this excellent article.

Not saying there are no bug fixes here. Just saying it's possible this is merely a PR campaign. Stop the bleeding. Make people feel they (Apple) are on it (problems).

Just a thought.
Looking forward to updating when I get home this eve.
Hoping to return to that lightning-quick responsive OS all pre-2.0 users came to know, love & dare I say "expect."

As a Mac user, I expect things to "just work." Releasing updates for the heck of it is not cool and I just don't think Apple does that kind of thing - at least I hope not.

as said before ...you can press the X and stop the backup, then it just syncs. you don't HAVE to backup every time you know

Yeah, as soon as mine is done, sometime in the next 40+ minutes, I'll be able to install the update that's already downloaded.

Just look at the this:

EDIT: Updated with 3rd time

Just stop the update. You can disable it by following these steps.

I just got this on my phone ... and I must say, it seems pretty improved.

Typing seems much better (thank god), the contacts app doesn't seem to lag as bad (thank god again), SMS seems good and things generally feel a bit faster.

But, as with anything, I'll have to giv' 'er a go 'round the block befo' knowin' fo' sho'.

18.7MB of 247.8MB, 33 min remaining

we need to pitch in and upgrade this fellow to 56k!

don't worry, the lag will be back.

Always back-up before installing a firmware update. Don't listen to people who say not to. I would have had to have done a lot of hunting, installing, typing when my iphone update stopped half way. Remember, this is an Apple iphone 2.0 firmware...treat it like you're holding plutonium and take every precaution.
