RESTORE IPHONE:

1) Close all programs and restart computer.
2) Open iTunes and plug in iPhone with direct USB connection.
3) If iTunes fails to connect to iPhone...continue to #4, if it does...restore.
4) Shut DOWN iTunes
5) Power OFF the iPhone & Disconnect from computer.
6) Hold down Home button & connect to computer (keep holding down the home button until iTunes sees it).
7) It should go into recovery mode and iTunes should recognise it.
8) If you want to recover to previous software version, Hold Alt/Shift and click restore in iTunes.

DFU MODE:
Step-by-Step:

1. Turn the iPhone ON
2. CONNECT it to the computer with a DIRECT USB connection.
3. Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode.
4. HOLD the Power/Sleep-Wake button AND the Home button for 10 seconds.
5. RELEASE only the Power/Sleep-Wake button and continue to hold the Home button.
6. WAIT until iTunes recognizes the phone in DFU Restore mode (in Windows a bubble pops up saying it recognized new hardware "DFU Mode" or something to that effect)
The last step may take SOME TIME, like, say, even 60 seconds or so.
The screen should be OFF (black), if you see the "Connect to iTunes" logo, START OVER.
It may take a few tries to do the steps just right, just reboot
(hold both Power/Sleep-Wake AND Home until the Apple logo appears and the phone turns back on) then try again.
7. Then restore the iphone

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)

finally google map is working correctly.

Yeah, as soon as mine is done, sometime in the next 40+ minutes, I'll be able to install the update that's already downloaded.

Just look at the this:

EDIT: Updated with 3rd time

Good thing you blocked out the name of your iPhone.

Less than 15 minutes to backup, download, verify, install and start back up.

Seems just fine; no noticeable changes yet, but I'll play with it for a while and see if I can find anything. I'll have to check 3G service strength tomorrow at work since I don't live in a 3G area.

Waiting for the backup which is taking forever before I can install the update. I hate backing up this thing.

Just super...Click check for upgrade...iPhone syncs, does backup in 3 min. Downloads and WHAMO error 1602...for the second time in over a year and only during updates with 2.0.1 and now 2.0.2.

Took 1 hour 42 min to restore and install new update, restarts and the Restore window in iTunes pops AGAIN...So now I am on second restore since this update was released. Unable to tell the effects of the Classic yet CAUSE IT WANTS TO KEEP RESTORING!!!

Christ my windows software works better then this 2.0.x crap!!!:(

Exact same problem with my v1 phone. Lame.

3G signal is not any better/different for me at all. I haven't had a really big problem with it either (I don't think I'm one of the 2% or anything like that), but it's definitely exactly the same for me around the house. I'm going to keep an eye on it as I head into work tomorrow and pass through different areas.

Something to note, though, right after update, 3G wouldn't load anything. Tried a bunch of sites and it just sat there and wouldn't load (had good signal too). Restarted the phone and it actually started loading this time but was very sluggish compared to usual (like slower than edge speeds). Another restart and the speed seems back to normal, however, my latency numbers are out of control high compared to what they used to be. I used to see around 200ms, now I'm seeing 400ms, 1700ms, and just now, 4100ms. I guess it could be that testmyiphone is getting hammered or maybe just the time of day for the 3G towers around here, who knows.

Nothing seems any different in the rest of the firmware to me either. I have had to hard reset once too due to settings freezing when I tried to go into it to turn on/off 3G/wireless. Guess those sort of freezes will be fixed in another rev.

No speed increases here in Manhattan. After the update, I was stuck on EDGE for a while (just like before update) and then finally picked up 5 bars of 3G and scored a 36Kbps on i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html

Yep, 36Kbps down in the West Village and couldn't use data at all at work in Midtown East. I got 1200Kbps yesterday in Midtown West.

Ah, lag glorious lag. Twas gone for but a spell, now it's back, same as ever.

Safari jumps all around when typing in a text box. Switching to landscape or back didn't fix it for me. In the past, this jumping screen business has always preceded SMS typing lag. Sure enough, it has happened exactly that way.

Contacts behavior seems the same as 2.0.(1).

So, from my chair, 2.0.2 seems to have done diddly.

Question about the forced backup before the 2.0.2 update is applied. When it says "Backing up (insert name here) iPhone" should the iPhone screen say that it is Syncing? Because mine is not. Mine just says "Slide to Unlock". The backup appears to be going on but very slowly. But I thought when a backup is happening that the phone is in Sync mode?

Why is it so hard for Apple to say what "bugs" they fixed? Every other software out there does that, including the apps in the App Store.

Mine doesn't say sync either this time but it seems to be working.

How long does this update to the phone take?

I updated to 2.0.1 when it first came out and the phone became a brick.
Had to go to the Apple Store where they updated it with a Mac. They said the PC update had problems on some computers.

Now I've been here over 40 min and iTunes is updating "Updating iPhone Software" and the bars are at 75% for almost the whole time.
The phone shows the apple and the spinning wheel.

PC is Dell Latitude D630 laptop.

Hours of Backup, Pulled Plug

I have a first generation iPhone with more than 60 applications on it, but almost no music (5.75 GB of free space). The backup process lasted more than two hours and was slightly over halfway done. I found a note on this forum suggesting that I would do better if my phone was plugged directly into my iMac instead of my hub. I yanked the plug and started over. As it turns out, I have USB 2.0 Hub, so I have not done anything by starting over but to double the time it will take. I'm going to sleep. :(

App store apps aren't written by Apple, except for Remote, which hasn't been updated at all (of course).

They're obnoxiously tight lipped about what iPhone updates fix. I think they do it to keep expectations at a minimum, which I think is totally sketchy. They get away with because they can for some reason.
