To be fair, it was important early on for a few people to post that so that others knew it wasn't a hoax even if their iTunes wasn't showing the update yet.

What to do?

Synch the phone first without applying the update. Then without unplugging the phone, go back and try to update. Worked for me and several others with this error on 2.0.1.

Same happened to me. Unplug your iPhone, then plug it in again and hit update. It's installing on mine now.

Got that error too and then itunes began taking up 172% of my CPU again (this has happeed a number of times)

I decided to do a reinstall. I will let you know how that goes.
