It should be $0 their justification to charge ipod owners (cause of Sarbanes Oxley) is pure B.S.! SOX is about internal controls not necessisarly accounting treatment.
Please, show me where they blame Sarbanes Oxley for charging... They never did.

They get money from iPhone subscriptions, but the last time I checked, you don't pay for an iPod subscription. And no, this money that goes to Apple from iPhone contracts has absolutely nothing to do with cell service.

Not really. Is throwing money away your hobby or profession?

Neither. I appreciate hard work though, and while it would have been nice, I don't feel that Apple owed me applications that weren't advertised as part of the package I bought.

Seriously, might want to stow the sarcasm.

In the Keynote when Steve annouced it, he talked about the minimal charge touch user would have to pay. Did anyone understand that?

I believe he said "nominal", which means about the same as "ideal" or "fair". In other words, Apple is going to charge what they feel is the best amount of money for the update.

Also, I think the JSU apps will be sold as a package in the App Store, as well as future software updates to the iPod touch software. People would be pissed if they included the JSU apps and 2.0 for the same $20 price. Possibly 2.0 and JSU seperately for $20 each and a bundled package for $35.

Okay, to your first point: If the JSU is sold in the App store, what about the functionality to add Web Apps and rearrange the Home Screen? I think it would be cool if they sold them in the App Store but Idk how they would find a way to throw in the Home Screen features.

And to your second point, that would be amazing if they bundled the two for $35. In fact, I would love Apple even more than I do now... despite having no love for their high prices, but hey! it's what u get for the best. :apple:

Well, what I meant there is that I believe future firmware updates will be available OTA through the App Store, and I believe updates that you have to pay for may also be available in the App Store. And that they may have the JSU extra features (all the additional applications and features you got when you coughed up $20) as a purchase in the App Store, including Home Screen re-arranging and lyrics and stuff.

It probably won't happen, but still it's a cool idea :)

I think Apple would be wise to keep the price low (<$20), as then more people will buy it and spend more money in the app store (as opposed to jailbreaking), and earning them more revenue in the long run.

I agree with you that this likely has nothing to do with any regulations requiring a real ongoing revenue stream of any sort whatsoever. If that were the case, then they wouldn't have been allowed to offer the Apple TV update for free.

Those who choose to continue grinding the regulatory axe, will respond by saying that there doesn't need to be any real ongoing revenue stream -- rather, Apple can simply choose to defer reporting the revenue that was generated at the point of sale over the course of several months or years. The argument would go that Apple chose to use such a deferred reporting scheme for the Apple TV, but for whatever reason they chose not to do so for the iPod Touch. I guess this is possible, but without any evidence to back it up it's still pure speculation.

In my opinion, though, this is just a case of Apple exercising its perogative as a participant in a free market, to assign a value that it sees fit to its work, and charge a price for its wares (or choose not to charge as it sees fit) . If the consumer doesn't agree that the price Apple sets is worthwhile, then it simply won't sell, thus triggering Apple to reevaluate its pricing and adjust as necessary.

whilst enjoying the touch immensely: it has flaws. i too paid the 20$ and i think it was good but stocks: never use. as well weather only is correct about 1/10 times. i remember getting up and the high was mentioned -6 (okay that is fine i thought and the low was minus 11). i stepped out side and found out from another source: mostly my hair instantly freezing that it was in fact minus 22.

i have had days where it says the weather in toronto or in rumoi will be 35, in april. the weather may work for a few select people but it is absolute rubbish. so what did i pay for? mail? i use that when? when im at home? when my computer is near? i should have not bought 20$ for nothing at all other than a bit more safari stability for the 5 minutes i use it every 2 weeks.

as an audio player: touch excels in everthing except that it hisses more than all other ipods aside from the snakey shuffle. other than that, i love it

I'll gladly shell out $20 for the software update.

Hopefully the update comes with more secrets then just the App Store.

I don't see paying $20 for something i'm going to give $ possibly to :apple: everytime i download something.

PS: not to got off subject. does anyone else get kinda pissed when all the apps say Iphone App onit... WE ARE HERE ALSO.... it's like we don't get any love:(

I 100% agree.

1. I will also gladly pay for the firmware update.

2. Exactly, there has to be something more within this software, something ... consumer focused ..... possibly iChat/Photobooth/Photo Editor? (See 3)

3. I don't think we've seen every feature/app from Apple which is to be included in v2.0 ... just yet, actually I personally think the App store will be accompanied by 3/5 new applications (Apple written) and bundled games , possibly Touch Fighter from the March 6th event? - Who knows.

4. And yes, it's highly frustrating that everything is directed at iPhone.

Heres hoping Apple announce immediate availability of v2.0 for both current users of iPhone/iPod touch and iPhone 2, on Monday.

Ironically, the Safari stability improvements were delivered to you for free in the baseline 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 firmware updates, which were available to all iPod Touch users regardless of whether or not they chose to buy the JSU.

The *only* unique things the JSU brought to the table were: Mail, Maps, Stocks, Notes, Weather, and the reconfigurable icons on the home screen.

I actually believe that the 2.0 update will be CHEAPER than the January Software Update. I think this because Apple had a pretty hard time with the last update; people complaining; continuing to jailbreak etc. So, I think they might make it cheaper.

I think it will be about £10 instead of £12.99.

Just my point of view.

I doubt it will be cheaper. This is a massive update so there not going to just want to give it away.

Whatever!

Your acceptance of anything Apple does is indicative of being sheep.

And i will point out, that that CAN get you a temp ban. seriously, he said stow it, because this is a nice forum, not for flame wars.

I think it will also be $20. (since thats all i got left in itunes )

Speak for yourself. I use the Weather widget, and the Stocks widget could be quite useful. Besides, the other three are more than worth the $20 alone. You make it sound like you deserve to be given more than you originally paid for instead of actually buying things that you want to be able to use. Do you expect your car manufacturer to upgrade your radio for free when they add satellite radio to a new line of cars, or to give you whatever new feature they come out with just because it can be retrofitted for yours?

R-Fly and I hold the same position... and the reasoning has nothing to do with a sense of entitlement.

Of the 5 apps of the JSU, Mail, Notes, and Maps all add to the functionality of the phone beyond the abilities of Safari. (okay, not Maps, but that is made significantly easier).

Weather and Stocks, on the other hand, are effectively nothing more than bookmarked websites. You might as well have a Safari bookmark for weather in your zip code or stocks on yahoo finance for your favorite company.

Therefore, their additive value is minimal at best.

Heck, I don't even own a Touch, but I thought Jobs's selling point of 5 apps for $20 being a great deal dubious.

Don't be so quick to judge those who disagree with you. There are other ways to think about this.

not really sure how massive an update this will actually be...

the iPod touch already has apps -- this update will set up a means to buy more through a store, right?

have I already forgotten something else? (entirely possible mind you)

if I were an app dev I am sitting around really hoping apple lowballs this upgrade so that as many people as possible will have a chance to buy MY app.

I choose ten US dollars.

1)It is expected there will be 2-4 new applactions.

2)There is rumors the biggest part of the up date will be alot of new features added.

3)Part of the upgrade will be the sdk.It is up to decelopers what they want to charge $0 and up.

If it was just sdk getting added i would agree $10.BUt there is so much more getting added or should i say expected.

Well, I have one complaint - how the **** can I upgrade if there's no iTunes store here? That's the biggest problem with this whole upgrading bs ... Fine, if Apple is so cheap that they have to charge the upgrade, but at least make upgrading possible for everyone.

Grab youself an iTunes Gift Card from one of the existing countries which has a store, and use it on that store to create a free account (no credit card required). Then buy the update from that store using credit from the gift card :).

This is currently the only way to bypass not having a store in your home country.
