Irie reply to Andillo

Hi Andillo -

1) My $600 Pavillion A520N plus I bought a cheap Radion 9600XT card. Works great with WCIII and CnC Genreals. Should work as best can be expected for its power - runs monitor without a hitch. This level of card should be really cheap with the next gens popping up

2) everything upon the boot looks normal. but honestly this 3200+ AMD64 flashes the bios screen and the login for XP is up incredibly fast. The brief exposure to the bios and XP start up screen looks as normal as you can expect.

3) min resolution 800X600 and max 1920X1440 (but windows wants 1920X1200 as a max) - I have not tried allvthe resolutions but it seems to scale stuff perfectly - as if it knows it is a wide screen. But seriously the 800X600 is so incredibly low for this size of screen it is like a playschool computer for toddlers :)

I put up a 4MP pic of my dogs taken outside and even my wife who is not quite the tech freak I am, was impressed. Her statement was "it is as if it was looking OUTSIDE through a window...so to impress her... well let's say the bill no longer threaten the marriage :p

It would be a perfect pacifier until you pick up a G5 or G6....

Hey, I have a question to iriejedi...

I'm considering a Cinema Display 23 for my Windows system (Mac will follow next year after school finishes). Since you have this display running with Windows, my questions would be:

1. Which graphics card does the PC have? (I need a new one, mine has no DVI)
2. Does the display display the BIOS messages or DOS text (before booting into Windows) correctly?
3. Any other problems with this combination? Can you choose if resolutions lower than 1920x1200 (like 1024x768) are stretched or centered?

Thanx for help
Andillo

I seem to have fixed it by making the icon size - in the view options - 44x44, a bit smaller than it had been. I wish I could remember what they had been, but it doesn't matter. It seems to have needed to be bumped down a little bit and now everything is falling into place. Makes sense - sort of...

I ran into the same problem, but its been happening for a while and has nothing to do with the new monitor. It's the icon size, as you have discovered. A little shift in size, up or down, and the problem is gone.

Now that the 20" & 23" are available and shipping, we have good news. The wait now is on for the shipping of the new 30" Anyone have a shipping date yet?

I have some bad news and want to know if anyone else reading this has had this problem. I have a 1GHz 15" PB Aluminum that I'm using to drive my new 23" Aluminum Cinema Display, and when there is a black background (such as the after-screen-saver login screen with the login box a on a black background) I can see tiny little colored dots flickering in the black. I don't think this is a problem with the 23", and the PB's native display has never had the little specks, so I suspect the DVI connector on the PB 15" has a noise problem. Wouldn't be a first for Apple, considering what I've read of the audio noise on Powermac G5s.

This noise is unacceptable, and I'm thinking about contacting Applecare since I just got the PB 15" this last week and it should have 1 year of Applecare. Anyone else driving their 23" from a PB and see the flickering colored specs on a black background?

I am running a 1.25 GHz 15" AlBook with a new 23" display. Haven't seen any little specks.

Tim

p.s. No problems with my dual 2.0 either. :)

Got it!

Ordered it on July 2nd around 3pm EST. FedEx says it shipped it on the 27th. The package was sitting at the sort facility since the 24th.

Came in from Sac-town to Maryland on the 31st.

after nearly five weeks of waiting...I received my display today and....DOA

Luckily, they had one in stock at the apple store down the street from my house, and they swapped it for me. It is a very nice monitor indeed. :)

Test on 20' and 23' on "Macwelt"

The German magazine "MACWELT" has a test of the 20' and 23' displays.

Conclusion is:
both look stunning .... well, we new that...
both get very warm ... 50° Celsius is what they measured...
the 23' has a far better "distribution of brightness" (sorry, guys, dont know the english technical term). This is the weak side of the 20'.

And a surprise: both displays worked well with classic OS 9.

They are rating the 20' as good.
and the 23' as excellent.

That is certainly the big advantage of having an Apple Store nearby. I always prefer the face to face idea for questions. Problems can be solved quickly. May you have years of enjoyment. ;)

you probably mean "light distribution".. like the display is about overall equally lighted..
that it is. It is gorgeous- VERY VERY bright and extremely evenly lit- the colors are fantastic as well. I would almost say "it was worth the wait", but man...did I wait.

Thanks, I hope it lasts me a few years. NOt only were they courteous and quick with the swap, but they also let me check the new one to make sure it worked (I was also secretly looking for dead pixels ;) ).

You know... out of all the reports of new displays, not one person has said they got any dead pixles. I got a 23" and of course I was very very worried about it, but when I opened it up it was great.

The only thing I have noticed is the very very top left corner looks slightly less bright than other parts of the display...... but this could just be me.

I took my 23" display (with my AlBook) with me to Ohio this weekend to show the parents. I came back and hooked it back up to the G5 and was taking some photos of the set-up. When I imported them into iPhoto I noticed a stuck red pixel on some of the pictures that wasn't there before I left . I thought to myself how stupid to take it on the road (it was packed safely in the air-conditioned car).

So I immediately launched a program to check for dead/stuck pixels. There weren't any though. I was sure it was a stuck pixel because it was always in the same place on each picture. Turns out I had some little red thing on the lens of my digital camera. So regardless of the direction I shot a picture the little red thing was always in the same place.

Scared the @#%$@%* out of me for a minute. :)

HAhaha, that's a great story. Glad it worked out for you....

I always get some dust on my monitor and start to think that it might be a dead pixle, then I rub it and it goes away and I am always slightly giddy...

Finally received mine. It's so beautiful. Now if my G5 was here here so I could use it.

I've put up with my G3 for long enough!

Guys,

Can you post some more product photos for the deprived and the waiting people (who are also currently deprived). I'm dying here. :)

...after spending a few hours with my new 23", all I can say is that 30" is going to be ENORMOUS. I have to turn my head to see the whole screen and I'm "only" on the 23".

it's also really cool how my powerbook tucks right in under the screen on top of the aluminum foot. NICE....

Ahhhhh. That's better, thanks. Everybody keep posting those pics, much appreciated.

@mactarkus -- did your 2.5 arrive? Or did you take the day off for nothing? :)

Waiting for the G5 and the 6800

I guess I didn't make it clear that I'm among those waiting for them to finish the 6800 so they can pop it in my Dual 2.5G5. End of the month they say. Until then, my B&W G3/800 will have the pleasure of my 23" Cinema Display.

Rocketfella...

Here's my setup. 23" w/ G5 dual 2.0. 17" Powerbook. I ended up putting the G5 on the floor to gain more desktop space. Now I have plenty of room to do work.
