new 20"

According to Apple, the new 20" & 23" aluminum frame LCD displays have begun shipping today. Priced at US $1299 & $1999 respectively, these two models now represent the lower end of the Apple Cinema Display line. The 30" Cinema display is rumored to begin shipping in August.

I was at my local Apple reseller today when they received the new 20"!

Of course I waited until it was unpacked and put on the floor.

I was impressed. It felt light and easy to move side to side.

i liked the thin bevel. The power brick is small and doesn't get in the way.

I also liked the highlights of white used on the monitor, the sides are molded white plastic with brightness and power buttons built in.

You can't put the mac to sleep via the monitor.

All in all a great product, now if the 23" is as bright as the 20" I'lll save my pennies.

Al 23" Cinema on the way...experience with dead pixels

I had originally been given an on or before 26 July ship date, but on 26 July, that magically changed to 24 August! It took a couple of days to get comfortable with another month's wait, but yesterday my credit card company tipped me off on some unusual purchase activity! Yes, Apple had attempted to charge for the 23" Cinema Display -- and they even got an authorization for my Dual 2.5GHz/6800 (that's not due until the end of August). I got a track number today for the Display -- I'll have it on Monday.

As for the dead pixel issue, I'm paranoid about it. I always have been since I first learned about this problem, and I sought out to buy my iBook 466/SE in 2000 -- I still have it BTW. I tried to convince a CompUSA guy back then to let me take it out of the box and turn it on before I bought it. No dice. I crossed my fingers and ordered from ClubMac and luckily, no dead pixels. Here's my track record so far:

iBook 466/SE none
iMac G4/800 none
Cheap-ass Proview 14" LCD one stuck off
Cornea 17" LCD/TV none
20" Original Cinema none
17" Studio none
Dell laptop (work) none
2 GW laptops (work) none
IBM ThinkPad T41p (work) none
Samsung 21" LCD none
Samsung 19" LCD none

So only one bad pixel in all those devices, and that one bad pixel is very hard to detect. It's so tiny and the adjacent pixels tend to light it up. If I get a few on my new 23" Cinema, I'll consider it payback.

Magnet on a monitor?

Sorry if I'm a bit off the real topic here, but it seems this thread gets a lot of attention from monitor-knowledgeable people. My question... I just got a 20" Aluminum Display and want to mount my iSight to it, but the accessory needed to achieve this attaches with a magnet. Is that safe? Having a magnet on a monitor!

Thanks,

Magnetic Personality

I think Apple promotes this as a 'feature' for the display/iSight combo

reas the iSight section of the Apple Store page (or the monitor section).... I'm sure I saw this marketing somewhere....

IJ
EDIT: From apple web sight

Magnetic Personality
To attach your iSight to the new displays, Apple now offers a magnetic mounting solution. This stand is available in new iSight boxes this summer, and included in the mounting kit accessory package.

23" Display

I placed my order on the Apple UK site on the 19th of July, was told to except delivery by the 25th August. I was surprised to get a shipment notification on the 21st July, delivery was on made on 23rd July with a part missing (power adapter) I got in touch with apple, they tell me to wait untill tomorrow (29th)
I would like to know if anyone else had the same problem.

Same here

As I posted above I had the same problem, 23" delivered on 26th and the power adapter came today (28th). They ship the adapter by air as it's low weight and cost effective so yours may be with you when Apple quoted.

As far as i know magnets are only dangerous to CRTs, not LCDs.

That sounds right. I don't think that Apple would have adopted the magnet idea unless it was safe.

23" arrived and USB info

My 23" monitor arrived at last yesterday morning. After what I guess is a preliminary notice from Apple which I received Saturday night, I received a second confirmation on Monday which contained the actual FedEx tracking number. From that point, everything went like clockwork with FedEx arriving before 10:30am the next day. The monitor is beautiful, no dead pixels. I couldn't be happier.

Some interesting notes that I'm not sure other new owners have mentioned. The power button on the monitor no longer has the ability to put the computer to sleep like the previous LCD's, it's purely a monitor power on/off switch. And it's effect is instant and the button very very touchy. Twice last night I accidentally shut it off with the slightest touch on the side.

Also, the monitor comes with a seperate leaflet called "USB and Your New Monitor" or some such title. In it, Apple advises not plugging the keyboard into the USB ports on the monitor, but rather into the computer itself, because there is some chance of only one of the USB ports on the keyboard working otherwise. The monitor ports are 2.0 and the keyboard is 1.x which they make a point of mentioning before this warning, so I think maybe that has something to do with the problem. Not too much of a big deal, except that the keyboard USB cord is quite short.

Despite this warning, I'm having no trouble with either keyboard USB port and my keyboard is plugged into the monitor.

Cool review... THANKS! I'm on the edge of ordering one of these bad boys, my 20" plastic CD is sooo 2003! It's nice to hear reviews in these forums, not just people whining about their current order status.

I can touch all 23 inches

Fed Ex just dropped it off - read all 5 pages of the manual and peaked inside the box - I think I'm feeling sick - maybe have to leave early from work to recover at home. ;)

:D

w00t!

I called my university's computer store on Tuesday and told them to order a 23" Cinema HD and hold it there waiting for me. They're supposed to call me when it actually ships to them. They say it will be a week or so.

I've got a month until I'll see it. :( I won't get it until I move in my university.

Hey, best thing is that I don't have to pay for it until I arrive there. :D And that's the second-to-last thing in my list of necessary things for a university dorm. I got a PowerBook, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, Bluetooth cell phone, printer, iSight, and Airport Express. Only thing remaining to buy is the printer.

Already shaping up to be a comfortable freshman year, save for the classes. :)

On my 20", I was able to change the Power button's action and have the system go to sleep when I touched the power button. You can change this from the Display settings in your System Preferences..

Sounds like you are going to have a truly awesome Freshman year. It would seem that the only thing that you don't have is a G5. That is nice of them to put the 23" on hold for you until you arrive in a month.

Need a Drink 23 inch on Windows

I've seen the Apple LCDs (not the new ones) and noticed how immaculate the image quality is.

The specifications seem to be beat by cheaper lcd displays, but the apple displays look much better. Why is that?

Meh, I don't need a G5. It's about 800 miles and 18 hours drive from my hometown to my university. I don't want to bother with a G5 yet. My PowerBook is perfect. I have money left over so with a bit of saving up and more working next summer, I should have a sweet dual 3 GHz set up (please be dual core!). :D

But meh, not what I need now.

You are to be congratulated for knowing what you need and want. Your explanation is perfectly understandable. Your parents must be very proud of your decision making process.

Meh, my mom was kinda in shock when she heard that I had a 23" Cinema HD display on hold for me... she was like "WE HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT?!" Heh. I was like, uhhhh, yeah, and I have a job already.

I just still can't wait for my exciting fresh new life--far from home, new friends, tough classes, etc. It'll be one hell of a year and experience.

Question for other new 23" Owners

Running OS 10.3.4. Every time I create a new file or download anything on the desktop, it goes in the bottom righthand corner. Subsequent ones stack up on each other. I have tried messing with the finder view options. If I snap to the grid, it continues to do it. If I do the "keep arranged by" option, it won't do this, but I like arranging things manually and have never used this option.

When I hook up the same computer, a Rev B dual 2.0 G5, to my old 20" cinema display, this does not occur and the new folders or documents snap nicely, one after the other, down each line to the bottom, then a new column starts to the left of it, as it has on macs since time began.

Has anyone else run into this problem or have any answers?

Thanks.

Hmmm, strange problem. Have you checked display preferences to see that the resolution is set to 1920 x 1200? I think I would try a pram zap (opt-cmd-p-r on boot) which resets many system preferences. There might be some obscure preference out of whack that we haven't thought of. It's hard to guess why the problem isn't the same on your old display. If it was, it might make some sense.

I seem to have fixed it by making the icon size - in the view options - 44x44, a bit smaller than it had been. I wish I could remember what they had been, but it doesn't matter. It seems to have needed to be bumped down a little bit and now everything is falling into place. Makes sense - sort of...

PB 15" "noise" problem driving 23"

I have some bad news and want to know if anyone else reading this has had this problem. I have a 1GHz 15" PB Aluminum that I'm using to drive my new 23" Aluminum Cinema Display, and when there is a black background (such as the after-screen-saver login screen with the login box a on a black background) I can see tiny little colored dots flickering in the black. I don't think this is a problem with the 23", and the PB's native display has never had the little specks, so I suspect the DVI connector on the PB 15" has a noise problem. Wouldn't be a first for Apple, considering what I've read of the audio noise on Powermac G5s.

This noise is unacceptable, and I'm thinking about contacting Applecare since I just got the PB 15" this last week and it should have 1 year of Applecare. Anyone else driving their 23" from a PB and see the flickering colored specs on a black background?

Hey, I have a question to iriejedi...

I'm considering a Cinema Display 23 for my Windows system (Mac will follow next year after school finishes). Since you have this display running with Windows, my questions would be:

1. Which graphics card does the PC have? (I need a new one, mine has no DVI)
2. Does the display display the BIOS messages or DOS text (before booting into Windows) correctly?
3. Any other problems with this combination? Can you choose if resolutions lower than 1920x1200 (like 1024x768) are stretched or centered?

Thanx for help
Andillo
