Oh, are you talking about the little drawers? I have three small containers stacked on top of each other. The left side of the desk is supposed to hold a tower, but mine is too big to go in there. I was afraid it would slip off.

Yes, but from the picture they look very fancy. Would have never guessed that they were drawers. I don't blame you for wanting to be very careful with your tower. Very important cargo.

I do miss my G5. It was 6 months old. Turned her off on Thursday (storm was coming) powered it back on when I got home and I heard the OS chime but did not get any video, then the fans would go full blast. Either Video Card or Logic Board to be replaced. I will up my Apple Care though as replacement for the Logic Board would have been 900.00 w/o it.

The new 23" is the last monitor I will ever need I believe. :)

See, nothing fancy. Just cheap plastic drawers to store pens, batteries and such. Also helps hide the gap where a tower should be :)

A Question about Cinema Display & Windows

Hey,

I have a question to people using the new Apple Cinema Display 23 with a PC... I found some rumors that Apple displays do not support 640x480 resolutions...

Could anybody who uses the display with Windows try to boot Windows in VGA mode (pressing F8 when it starts to boot and then choose "enable VGA mode"? I wonder if you see something in VGA-Windws? I mean, it doesn't need to look good, but you should be able to read the text... If yes, I'm going to buy the display :)

Thank you for any feedback

I don't think it has anything todo with the resolution of 640x480. Appparently, it has to do with the way the graphics card talks to the div connector, and yes, i've read, the apple display does not show the boot texts, it only shows an image from the moment, the computer goes into graphical mode. You will not see a POST.. But that problem accounts for a lot of pc lcd's as well. So it's more like a gfx card issue

23" Cinema Owner with a PC

I have a new Al 23" Cinema Display connected via DVI to an HP Athlon 3K/nVidia 5900SE and 640x480 is no problem at all. I can boot in VGA mode as you asked. Everytime I boot, the HP DOS-like boot screen shows up and I can change the BIOS settings if necessary. The only problem I have (and a small one at that) is that it doesn't remember my 1920x1200 setting upon a restart. It wants to boot in 1024x768 so I have to switch resolutions. Since this only happens on restart and switching resolutions is a quick process, I'll live with it. Playing Doom III on this display was a frightening experience.

BTW, the real partner for this Display is my Dual 2.5G5/6800U due at the end of the month.

Thank your for the update nfocus design, it just goes to show how deceiving a picture can reflect. A different perspective makes all the difference.

bpd115, your post is a perfect example of why AppleCare is so important. The phone support for 3 years is important also. How long are you expecting your 23" display to last. My 17" Studio Display just lasted a little over 3 1/2 years and died.

What is the size of the DC power adapter ?

I plan to buy the 23" but before I do that I need to know what is the size of the DC power adapter(Width X Height X Length (in cm or inch) ) ?

As I understand DC power adapter is an external unit.
Can anyone who has one of the latest 23" measure his DC unit or even post a pic

Thanks !

My 'repaired' PB 15 should be back at the Apple Store between Monday and Thursday, and I'll post updates about whether the sparkles go away or not.

I am eager to find out how your problem is going. I recently bought one of the new 23" High Definition Apple Cinema Screen Displays, and have it connected to my 15" G4 Powerbook which I bought in January.

I've discovered the same strange problem with my screen. Randomly, when ever my screen displays an area which is 'black', I can sudddenly detect countless pixels which flash on and off! The sparkle phenomena.

This occurs some times when I am in Adobe Photoshop in Full Screen Mode. Or even inside a psd file which has a large area of black. Also, when I play some quicktime files, it the black areas. And even when I play a video game, in the black part of the monitor not displaying game vision.

I wondered if this had anything to do with my laptop's video card. So I asked a friend who had also recently bought the new 23" High Definition Apple Cinema Screen to run with his G4 powerbook if he had experienced anything similar. His answer was no, his monitor was working perfectly.

We decided to connect his G4 Laptop to my new 23" High Definition Apple Cinema Screen and see if the problem persisted. Sure enough, their was the flashing pixels in the black areas!

Makes me think the problem is with my monitor.

how new is your G4 laptop? It may be a problem with the amount of video RAM that it takes to power such a huge screen? Just a random guess really, but I would be impressed if my 3 year old G4 550 PowerBook would hook up to such a beast of a screen with no problems.

It's the latest model, I purchased it in January this year. And by Apple's standards, it should be fast enough to handle the monitor. They actually advertise it working with the G4 powerbook. Thanks for your guess, but plenty of other people are experiencing the same problem, and it seems more likely that the fault lies with the monitors themselves.

Just got my 23" display and i noticed the backlighting is clearly more intense on the left side of the screen
Is this normal behaviour?

No it's not, you should go back to the store, or call Apple

I had a few minor dim spots around the edges when I first turned on my new 23", but they went away after it warmed up. I've heard others had the same at first. I haven't heard about one side being more intense than the other. I would say that is defective and they should not give you any trouble over it.

How does this sort of thing work with apple?
They assess your call and send you a new a new one and you have to return the defective one?
Or do you have to return it to the nearest apple service point, and hope they have a new one there?

If you bought a new one and it is defective, they should replace it with a new one. You should not be charged a restocking fee either. Did you order online?

I don't know rob, I never had to deal with this kind of issue. But I bet they can't give you a refurb one, since you just got theirs, they need to repair it, or give you a new one.

Thanks for your reply Klaus
You think it's likely they'll make a fuss about it?

Apple has great customer service, I'm sure that they will make it right. Just state your case and be positive.

Yes i did

Well, if you had purchased at a store, I'd say go swap it and it shouldn't be a big deal. I'd just start by calling Apple and explaining the problem. I don't know if they will make you send yours in first or send you a replacement and then let you send yours in. I do think that Apple tries to make things right when there is a problem.

I ordered my 23" on 07/16 in a bundle with a G5 dual 2.5. Now the computer has shipped but the display order status is still open -- which is odd, since during the past weeks a lot of people have got their 23" displays way before their G5 2.5s.

Something is brewing with quality control... I can smell it. Maybe Apple found out that too many of their alu displays have issues.

Hmmmm. Suspicious, suspicious. ;)
