Good deal. The calibration tool in Panther is quite good. I've been surprised to see all the comments about pink displays when it *is* adjustable. Mine looks fine.

20" display with with 12'' powerbook

Has anyone got a 20'' display with a 3g 12'' powerbook?
Just wondering how they perform as i'm considering using this setup with my powerbook or waiting on the specs for the imac being better than posted as it looks like the rumored imac has the same graphics card.
I'm starting to think that a 20'' display would be a better long term investment than a all in one design.

Like many others here and on the Apple support message boards, I received a monitor that exhibited a pink push.

It always seemed to get worse the more I looked at my screen to the point it was practically giving me a headache.

Today I visited both J&R and the Apple Store in SoHo. ALL of the 23" monitors on display had a pink cast to them, while ALL of the 20" monitors were perfect.

Long story short: I'd played with the monitor calibration tools but had no luck getting rid of the pink. I was this close to calling Apple and asking for an exchange. I played with the calibration tools once more and discovered that in my haste I'd overlooked the ability to shift the hue controls all around the color map, not just up and down like with the contrast controls.

With just a few attempts, I've managed to get rid of the pink push altogether and I couldn't be more relieved. The monitor looks fantastic (at least to the naked eye). I feel like an idiot, but at least now I'm a really happy idiot.

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I don't think that you are an idiot. You showed intelligence by using a researching and fixing your problem with the pink. I agree a person always feels better when they have fixed a problem.

Sorry fossyy, Apple doesn't make a 3g 12" PowerBook. That is if your are talking about Ghz or is it memory?

What I dont understand is Apple isn't shipping the 17' with the new silver style, like the 17' is worthless or something? The most popular resolution nowadays is 1024x768 although the 17' is higher then that, is Apple assuming no one wants a 17' and would rather want a 20'-23' monitor, monitors ridculously pricey that most people would consider a bit much?

I'm not sure what Apple is planning. For people like me that have a Power Mac G4, it will only work with the 17". That is unless Apple has made some kind of change to the 20". Otherwise it means upgrading of the video card. I found this out this past January.

my 23 = fine

Hello,

I picked up my 23 inch from my reseller this morning, was worried it wouldn't work, but plugged it into my 1ghz 12inch PB and it was fine. No dead pixels as far as i can see, and the only problem i've had is that i have to tone down the resolution a notch to get smooth dvd watching - it was a little jerky at the highest res.

I suppose there is a slight pink tinge, but i haven't messed with the calibration at all, and am very happy with the stock setting.

ps

I'm happy to hear that you are happy with your new 23" display. Welcome to MacRumors, hope that you will enjoy posting. I hope that you mean your comment about me in a positive way. ;) There are many here that know a lot more than I do.

Flawless

I'm still waiting for my G5 to come, but i managed to test my 23" HD Display with my dad's laptop (15" 667MHz Powerbook DVI) and it worked perfectly, no dead pixels, no brightness/contrast inconsistencies, and no pink tint.

So now that I know this thing isn't a lemon, I can stop worrying about it, and continue focusing on my work and getting my G5.

Edit: I ordered my display on July 6th

great!

I wish I could test it myself, but I would have to go to my reseller for that, since it's still there. Oh well, if there are issues with my display or not, it will not solve them by knowing it in advance of my g5 :)

That sounds like a good plan. That way they can know each other at bootup. The awesome power of the G5 can only make its operation better.

hey wdlove,

i just meant that whenever someone is having a moan, a problem, or like me just a positive review, you consistently have a supportive or helpful comment. I'm a bit of lurker btw, so i don't post too often. Mainly because the internet here is quite slow and the replies don't often work.

Oh how i love this display...

Congrats, fellas!

Hm, I'd really, really like to know if some of you can reproduce the "burn-in/ghosting" issue. If you have time, please look here [macrumors.com]. Thanks a lot.

I had two problems with it - two stuck red pixels, and some desaturation on the outer centimetre or so of the bottom of the left hand side.

In normal use I can't see the pixels, and the desaturation seems to have cleared with use. It's gorgeous, and it's all mine... :)

I was initially using my old 19" crt as a secondary monitor, but now I've adjusted to the TFT I find looking at the crt awkward, so I've disconnected it. Maybe I should think about a second 23" :D

I actually tried to get it to happen when i still had my dad's laptop hooked up to it, I didn't see any ghosting at all. I left a window up for about 20 minutes, when i closed it it was instantly gone.

Thank you for the clarification Klopsi69, a very kind comment. I'm a supportive type of person, comes from my training as a nurse. I hope that will be able to become a more regular poster. Do you happen to be in a area with any high speed internet?

Further to Post 411

I received the replacement 23" on friday and I do not think I have been so disappointed for a very long time. This display has all the problems eg:- Pink, ripple, uneven illumination and ghosting. Called apple today they were willing to replace the display again or I could send them back (still have the first one) and have a refund. I have decided to take the refund as I am moving on the W/end and I just know if I went for another replacement something else would go wrong (plus if I had another I could open my own apple store :D ). The displays are readily available in the shops in London so it might be better for me to shop around for a perfect display, may even go for the 20" or a ctr.
I love the display its size, its depth of colour etc, but for a display costing £1,500.00, the quality control is very disappointing.

What are peoples opinions on needing applecare for the cinema displays?

i'm ordering a G5 from apple, but was thinking that I would just get the display at a near by store. They have a 30 return policy on them which will give me plenty of time to look for defects, ie: dead pixels.

I don't think apple takes back displays for dead pixels, and I'm the type that would want to return it if it even had only one dead pixel!

I'll be getting the apple care for the G5, but am so worried about the display that I'm considering the above mentioned.

I've talked to many sales reps and have heard many different stories ie: you can return it within 10 days for any reason, we exchange for dead pixels, we don't exchange for dead pixels, apple care covers pixels, apple care doesn't cover pixels...blah, blah blah, I can't get a straight answer, it's maddening!!

Anyway, bottom line, do I need extended warranty on a display?

thanks in advance for all opinions.

Pinkish display problem

So many people here are having little problems with the new 23in
Apple displays. Does anyone have a screen shot of the correct
callibrated settings for this screen? Just wondering as I am getting
worried reading this thread, planning on buying one at the Shinsaibashi
store the end of this month. After reading this thread I will most likely
have them take it out of the box and check it on site before I leave
the store.

Thanks in advance,
this is an educational thread, I'll sure say that much.

Brian

Mine is perfect. No pink hue, no dead pixels, no stripes, as mentioned by some others. Keep in mind that in forums such as this, much of what you'll hear is complaints. Happy people don't bother saying anything.

I personally would feel more comfortable having AppleCare cover my new Cinema Display. If you only have one or 2 dead pixels they won't replace the display. They judge on a case by case basis. The most important is to order the Mac and Display at the same time. If you purchase at a local Apple Store then you can return within 10 day. Depending on the reason, they might charge a restocking fee. I would also be concerned about after the 30 days. In your case it would be the local dealer that would assess your situation and contact Apple. You can also call AppleCare directly and explain the problem. Your display purchased separately locally will be covered for one year

I got to take a look at a 23" today and I was surprised by how thick it was, especially after getting used to my thin iBook screen (okay, okay, I know the sizes are so different but it made me wonder why they couldn't make it thinner). What I thought was a nice addition though was three touch buttons on the left side (which feel just like the 3G iPod buttons) for power and to lower or increase the brightness.

small llight on the apple displays

Well, there is a small light on the right bottom side of the display, which apparently lights up when the display is in sleep mode, and goes dark when the display is on. Several of you guys reported this.

But I downloaded an image from apples pr website (media), and look how it looks. If that light isn't on, than I don't know what is causing the glow!

Software glitch or hardware issue?
