Either way if the yankees go on a streak or not i still see the O's making the playoffs and winning the penant. We have such a young athletic team that goes pretty deep.

Yanks got off to a bad start but when they get hot look out. The main problem with the yanks is their pitchers and team over all is pretty old. My prediction is the O's and Yanks in AL east divison playoffs. O's win the divison tho and Yanks get wild card! :D

On a side note:

Does anyone here use mlb.tv here? It's 15 bucks a month, 80 bucks a season to watch any of the games as long as you are out of market. It's perfect for watching the sox out here in seattle. However, it's horrible sometimes. Today was super choppy, had to reconnect every 5 minutes. Atleast they gave me a free month.

BEN

I have it down here in PA, and it's serviceable at best. I find that using the RealPlayer option works a little better than Windows Media, but it can be a shot in the dark either way. I try not to have any other internet applications open, and it's usually okay.

Why the hell won't MLB let us buy the Extra Innings package on a per month basis?

What about one who played right field. :) Id like to see Mr Paul come back.

Exactly my thoughts ;)

I think the problem is more on defense. I haven't watched many games this year, but like Sox pointed out, their conversion is much lower than other teams. This means more pitches for the pitchers, and pressure. Sure there is some good defensive centerfielders available out there. I doubt they would bring in anyone other than a big name though.

Are we forgetting about the current defending world champs who are now 1 game out of first place and starting to play like last year (winning one run games, deep offensive power). If we could just get out closer to calm down.

Sure, the yanks can sweep the mariners and beat the A's, so can boston. We're on a 8 out of 9 winning streak, not too shabby.

The O's are basically an addition to an already full division.

PS. How about those chi-sox. Talk about a great start to the season.

The Chi Sox had a tough time playing the Devil Rays, O's are a novelty act and will be out by the all star break, and who cares about the Red Sox anyways.

Well, you have to believe that the White Sox will come back to earth. They're getting it done with pitching and nothing else. Their starters have been lights out and each has pitched deep into games (doesn't Buerle have 2 CGs already?) and the pen isn't terrible.

However, if any of their pitchers tails off even a little bit, the ChiSox are in for a precipitous fall. They're essentially a National League team (Posednik gets an infield hit, steals two bases, scores on a grounder to 2B, Buerle pitches a complete game shutout). They don't take pitches, they don't walk, and the team slugging % is barely higher than its OBP. Contreras sucks against any decent offense, and who knows if Garland can keep this up. You still have to like the Twins to come out of the Central.

As a Sox fan, the Os scare me a whole lot more than any other team in the American League. They've had a great lineup the last couple years, and it's only gotten better with the emergence of Roberts and Matos and the addition of Sosa (who no longer has to be the face of a franchise. He might not have much "juice" left, but he's still better than Bigbie, Gibbons, or Surhoff in RF). Position by position, they're crushing the Yankees right now and match up very well against Boston.

But it's the pitching that's the difference between last year and this year. Lopez, Cabrera, Chen, and Berdard have been tremendous. Their bullpen is arguably the best in the league, and it's indisputable that BJ Ryan has been a better closer this season than either Mariano Rivera or Keith Foulke.

The O's staff is comprised of young pitchers who have struggled through their early years and are finally coming around. I don't expect them to fall off, I expect them to improve.

Happy 80th Birthday Yogi Berra. :)

Here are some Yogi-isms

When asked what time it was, Berra replied, "You mean now?"
"It ain't over 'till it's over"
"It gets late early out there"
"When you come to a fork in the road....Take it."
"The future ain't what it used to be"
"It's deja vu all over again"
"Never answer an anonymous letter"

You obviously have not been watching baltimore play. And as for your yankees i hope George Steinbrener spends every last penny he has to try and get them to win... look at the team now Old Allstars that can't hit or pitch for crap! I just hope B-more Spanks em some more when we play again ! :D

I still think that this will be a Yankees Red Sox battle with the O's pulling 3rd.

You better hope Tino retires before then. And Randy quits. :p

We all hear alot of talk, but they're 3 games under .500. Do you have any evidence that they're going to significantly turn it around? Beating up on poor, last place teams does not make you a good team, especially at their pay roll.

Come on now, how do you think the rich get rich? By beating up on the rich? Nope, you gotta beat up the poor! Anyways Yanks are a mess. if it wasnt for Tino, who knows where they would be.

There was a wonderful article in the Pittsburgh paper recently about the Yankees, where the columnist said the following: (complete article)

- Yankee Stadium should be called "The 161st Street office of Steinbrenner's Priceless Antiques"

- Jason Giambi. Almost definitely shot. No one within a 5-mile radius of Yankee Stadium is any more in need of an illegal substance than this admitted steroid-stacker who hasn't been an effective hitter since he got off the juice nearly two years ago. Good thing George only owes him $82 million.

- Kevin Brown. Definitely shot. A 40-year-old prima donna too proud to take a minor-league rehab assignment, he's instead rehabbing in the big leagues. Eight of the first nine Tampa Bay Devil Rays to face him the other night got hits. There's a sentence that is probably never going to be written again.

- Bernie Williams. Very likely shot. Baseball's all-time leader in postseason homers batted ninth for Joe Torre April 13, mostly because Torre couldn't hit him 10th.

- Ruben Sierra. Shot? This guy's so old, mountains are named after him.

Wow, Two Quality starts by Brownie! Whod of thought!

Certainly not any Yankee fans, who collectively wanted to throw him under the bus as recently as a week ago. Grain Of Salt: Brown's "Two Quality starts" have been against the A's, the weakest hitting team in the majors. I didn't see last night's game, but he gave up something like eight hits through three innings in his outing last week. Any team other than the As would have chased him.

Why pitchers continuously try to pitch inside to Tino Martinez, I'll never understand. Do they not read the scouting reports? He's having a superb stretch, and a lot of it can be attributed to young pitchers thinking they can tool the old-timer. That sweet swing will kill you every time.

The Red Sox are currently tied with the Giants for the most Grand Slams in the majors this year. A lot of teams go through injuries, but not many are more significant than Trot Nixon's absence on the Sox last year. Not only did they miss his GG-caliber defense and killer bat against righties, but his injury forced the Sox to throw Kevin Millar in RF for 40% of the season. This is worse than Tony Womack playing LF. Nice to have Trotman back, healthy, and raking. Raking.

Any West Coasters out there to explain Gagne last night? That was rust, right?

wow, just reading this thread for the first time, there certainly has been a lot of over-evaluating of what is still just the first 6 weeks of the season. It's a 162 games, and we're just getting started.

The Sox and Yanks will still finish 1-2 one way or the other (Baltimore? don't make me laugh), Atlanta will take the NL east by 10 games, and the Cards will take the central by something similar. Ah, to have parity like the NFL!

Im gonna say Marlins over the Braves this year.
Yankees Sox down to the bitter end with the O's fighting for the WC

It was rust. And people have to be realistic about how good he is compared to other top closers. Obviously, he's been great, but you can't expect him or anyone else to reel off 84 straight saves again. I'm very comfortable with the Dodgers' bullpen compared to the rest of the NL West or almost any other NL team.

Its nice to see Oakland finally win a game. :p Yankees 9 in a row, Bernie Grand Slam. :D

Who knew dinasaurs could hit Grand Slams ???

Nice job Bernie. Rip him about his declining skills all you want, but he has taken his switch to part-timer/ DH like a class act. Bernie Williams = True Yankee.
