Sox win again... Wells really turned himself around all of a sudden. I just read that the 27 hits the Red Sox had Saturday was the most hits by any team EVER at Yankee stadium, including the Yankees themselves. (they hit 26 in 16 innings in 1970 something).

Yeah, I just got back from that game (the Wells one). The pitching was amazing, I'm surprised they didn't let him get the last 2 outs for a complete game.

I wonder what the Yankees management is thinking, after getting swept by the worst team in baseball right now KC Royals. :p

Of course the sweep helped push the Royals to a tie with the Rockies, so they aren't quite the worst now just tied for the worst.

Of all the times for the Royals to get a new manager and a spark of energy why did they have to do it when the Yankees come in to town. Of course the Yankees should be able to sweep the worst team in baseball there is no excuse for that.

Sort of nice to see the Yankee news in the Arizona paper. :p
Giving up young arms for Johnson hasn't paid off for Yankees

DALLAS - The New York Yankees have made numerous good decisions in the last decade.

Adding left-hander Randy "Big Unit" Johnson is not on course to be one of them.

The Yankees included right-hander Javier Vazquez and left-hander Brad Halsey in the off-season deal that brought Johnson from Arizona. Vazquez and Halsey have been vital members of Arizona's solid rotation.
Upset Steinbrenner holds conference call with Cashman, Torre
Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - Looking for answers after a historic sweep at the hands of the worst team in baseball, an upset George Steinbrenner held a conference call Friday with New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman and manager Joe Torre.

Torre said it has become an increasingly rare occurrence in recent seasons for The Boss to include him in such discussions, but this was a rare situation.

"It's happened a number of times, but not in recent times," Torre said Friday before the Yankees opened a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins. "This was sticking to why we're having a tough time. All of the same questions I ask myself.

"He was unhappy. If I tried to tell you anything other than that, you'd be questioning if I was telling you the truth, and I'm not going to lie to you."
Sort of an odd contrast, George Steinbrenner is extremely pissed and Randy Johnson probably isn't pissed enough.

The D-Backs had Randy quite pissed the past couple years to the point of physical contact with some of the other D-Backs, but now that he got traded to his hired-gun team -- them wind has been knocked right out of him. Or his knee is bothering him again.

So the Yankees get a nice come from behind win in the 10th with a Giambi walk off home run, Maybe they are allowing him to shoot up again.

In other Yankees news, It seems that the current Yankee Stadium will not exist anymore after 2009 as a new Stadium should be opened by then. :(

I think it's amazing that this is an era of building new stadiums (stadia?) right next to existing ones that still function. It seems like such a colossal waste of resources to me. I mean, is there no way to add luxury to an existing stadium? If it's a matter of a crappy lease with a city, wouldn't be cheaper to buy it from them and make some improvements. Even the proposed Twins stadium without a retractable roof is estimated at over $400 million. It just seems so unnecessary to me.

I think the whole reason that Big Stein wants to build a new stadium is to outwit the luxury tax. If they're able to sink revenue back into the stadium, I believe they get a break and would be free to sign the Carlos Beltrans of the world in the coming years.

I can't think of another good reason for them to do this. What do you get from throwing Yankee Stadium under the bus? I mean, it's not like they're moving to a nicer part of town. You want to go from "The House That Ruth Built" to "The House That Steinbrenner Renovated?" The history of the game is perhaps revered in baseball more than in any other sport, and it pains me to see greed destroying a monument such as Stade Fasciste, the Yard We Love To Hate. Apparently, they're putting in less seats and more luxury boxes. That's their rationale. Is there a Yankee fan out there that can defend this?

The only thing that I can't defend is the lack of bathrooms and small concourses. Other than that I see no reason for a new stadium that will look basically the same on the inside.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2087020

It will be just the third privately financed stadium in the major leagues since Dodger Stadium opened in 1962, joining the San Francisco Giants' new ballpark (2000) and the park the St. Louis Cardinals are to move into next year.

The team estimates its annual stadium expense will increase from $22 million to $68 million, money that will be deducted from its locally generated revenue when calculating revenue-sharing payments to major league baseball.

Assuming the revenue-sharing rules don't change substantially after the current collective bargaining agreement expires in December 2006, the ballpark payments will cut the revenue-sharing money some teams otherwise would receive.

"They may be the only unhappy people as a result of this deal," Yankees president Randy Levine said.

The Yankees unveiled a model of the ballpark, which on the outside will be treated with limestone and resemble Yankee Stadium prior to its 1974-75 renovation. It will seat from 50,800 to 54,000, with about 30,000 seats in the lower deck, an increase of approximately 10,000. The field dimensions will remain as they are currently, and the bullpens will be moved back to right field. Monument Park will move to the new ballpark, and a stadium club will be added above it.

Levine said the new ballpark also will be called "Yankee Stadium," but that the team may sell naming rights and have the ballpark called "Yankee Stadium at 'X' Plaza." Steinbrenner said the team rejected having a retractable roof.

Seems like there must be more to it than that. Why spend $800 million on a stadium to save $50 million in luxury taxes? Even if it were saving $50 million per year, it's still a gamble that baseball won't change the revenue-sharing rules again. Stein must figure that the extra suite revenue and naming rights will put him over the top. But I still can't help but think that modifications to the existing stadium, even if that cost $300 million, would make him even more money.

I think that the current Yankee stadium is very nice. The decision is up to the Yankees. The project should be entirely paid by the Yankees. No tax money should go to the project, especially when it goes to private millionaires.

The AL East is starting to tighten up again with the Yankees winning 6 in a row and the sox on a nice win streak too. Only 5 games separate 1st and 3rd now.

Jeter finally hits his first grand slam Saturday after 138 ABs with the bases loaded.

It's very nice, but I'm scared to go. You never know when more concrete will suddenly fall...

That's why whenever I go, I sit in t3h bleachers. Of course, as I hate the Yankees, I rarely go.

I'm one of like 2 New Englanders (not really, but you get my point) who hates the Yankees, Mets, and Sox.

Diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan. Don't ask why, I don't know myself.. I've been a fan since I was 6, despite my father being an ardent Yankees fan and nobody I know liking the Cards.

I know the Tigers have been pretty bad the last 10-15 years, but it would be nice if they had 2 all stars next week.

Slim (I mean Pudge) is an all star any year, but this kid Bonderman is getting it down too.

Although I loved last night's game vs. the Dodgers I have to take issue with umpires who throw out players at the drop of a hat. In this case literally. There was no way Brad Penny should have been tossed for throwing his helmet. If he said something that was not obvious to the viewer, the ump may have had cause, but in general it looks like this generation of umpires are too quick with the hook. No doubt it effected the game, as Penny was sailing along.

I'm still suffering through the year with my Giants and expecting them to unload players for prospects any day now. Unbelievable amount of injuries. The only shining light, if you can call it that, is that no one in the division deserves to win. In any other division the Giants would be 20 game out and officially buried. No word yet on when or if Barry will be back this season.

You've got a lot of nerve complaining about injuries with a Dodger fan around. We literally have two position players that have stayed healthy. Several relievers have gone down and two starting pitchers have missed a lot of games. It's as if the baseball gods were punishing them, even though they got rid of the Fox ownership.

On the bright side, they're finding out, all at once, which of their immediate prospects have a near future. Small bright side.

It is a written rule that you can't throw your equipment and a helmet is equipment, as for Bonds may he never return, the game has been much better without him.
