NL West - the worst in the majors

With the Padres loss today every team in the NL West is under .500 ball. Could a team make it to the playoffs with a losing record? Stick around and see as this year's version of NL West baseball will try the patience of the most ardent fan - driving all of us on the West Coast officially baseball crazy. Are bags over the head the next step?

On the bright side, my Giants are somehow still in a race when they should be 20 games back and playing out the string.

"Manny Being Manny" :/ now apparently a trade in the works to send Mike Cameron, and Aubrey Huff to the WORLD CHAMPION Red Sox. Manny would go to the Mets and the devil rays would get two prospects from both teams. The red sox have said they will not eat up a lot of Manny's contract.

In other news, Peter Gammons gets the sportswriter's award at the Hall of Fame inductions. Naturally this is the year Boggs gets Inducted as well.

I believe this is the first time any team with a losing record has led their division this late in the season. Bags over heads sounds like a plan for all of us west coast National League fans. I'd prefer not to have any eye-holes cut in mine, thank you.

Maybe some old Mets or Cubs fans can speak to the losing record. I think, if I remember correctly, that in '69 there was talk about the NL East being won by a team with a losing record. Of course, the Mets eventually won the division with a winning record and went on to their first World Series victory. It is unlikely the NL West will end up being "won" with a losing record - after all the teams have to play each other and somebody has to win in head-to-head play!

The bags should ready for the next homestand! :(

Certainly makes it look worse when the Diamondbacks are back for a 1st place tie in the NL west.

And they have played like crap all year... :(

But basically anybody can take the lead in the division if they put together a decent week or two.

Lets Here it for the new undectable steroids! Giambi is havin a killer month....
or what was expected out of him originally, one of the two.

The NL West is a joke this year :p You might as well all go to A's and Angel's games :D

And considering how the Sox were playing before this latest series, the Yankees have no business being stuck in 2nd place  :p

Just wait until the NL West division "champ" gets hot in the playoffs and wins the series. We will all be laughing at those year long struggles of other teams to play well, when all it takes is a hot September and October. :D

It almost happened before. In 1973, the Mets under manager Yogi Berra finished 82-79 to win a mediocre NL East. They upset the Big Red Machine in the NLCS and took the Oakland A's to seven games in the World Series.

I should have remembered. I went to a game in Oakland of that series. I saw a very old Willie Mays drop a fly ball in center field. Of course, as a long time Giants fan I was pulling for the Mets and Mays. Never liked those A's teams. Still don't.

CLEVELAND -- The New York Yankees have decided not to pick up the $15 million club option for next season on Bernie Williams, their steady center fielder on four World Series title teams.

The club had until Aug. 1 to exercise their option on the 36-year-old, who signed with the Yankees in 1985.

"I've talked to Bernie and I think he's comfortable with it," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Emotionally, he is fine with it. It is just that the last day of July was the day it had to be done. It was in his contract."

Williams wasn't surprised by the move, and he didn't rule out the possibility of returning to the only club he has ever played for.

"It's something they felt they had to do," Williams said during batting practice for Tuesday night's game with the Cleveland Indians. "I'm still playing for this team and I'm going to do all I can to help this team win."

Williams didn't want to speculate about his future. The Yankees entered the series with Cleveland 2½ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East and two games behind wild-card leading Oakland.

"It wouldn't be fair to talk about it at this point in the season," Williams said.

Torre said the club's decision came at an awkward point in the season, and he would like to keep Williams around.

"He still has plenty to give, other than being a day-in, day-out player," Torre said. "It would be unusual to face him in another uniform, but it is unusual for him not to be in the lineup everyday, hitting second or third, too. Things change."

A five-time All-Star, Williams holds the career postseason records for homers (22) and RBI (79) and games (115). He entered the season with a .301 career average, but he's struggled in 2005.

Entering Tuesday's game, Williams was batting just .245 with seven homers and 39 RBI in 88 games.

Way to go for the Players Union to confirm the positive test for stanozolol.

Report: Union mulls grievance

And since the artibrator seems to have failed to overturn the penalty, looks like it may be more than an accident.

I can't help but feel that someone in the Player's Union enjoyed the payback to George Bush, Palmeiro's close friend and former team owner, who now claims an interest in "cleaning up" the game, but did nothing when he had Palmeiro and Canseco on his team. When Dubya launched his witch-hunt, I don't think this was the outcome he wanted.

I don't think it was ever about "cleaning up the game." Congress only got involved so they could claim to be doing something bipartisan. Oh, and also to distract us from real problems that they'd rather not address.

Keith Olbermann had an interesting take on his blog about how he got wind of a big star with a positive steroid test. He and a colleague made a list of the most likely culprits and Palmeiro wasn't one of them. He points out that there's a very good chance Palmeiro will just retire rather than play again this season. The fan abuse would be severe. He also notes that - at this point - it would be very surprising if Bonds played again. I don't think that's terribly unlikely, but I doubt he'd be very good if he does play again. It's a lot of rehab for someone at his age, especially since a production drop-off seems well overdue, even if he wasn't on anything illegal at all.

We'll see how long those knees hold out. In the meantime, I don't feel many pangs of regret rooting at least temporarily for the Giants (for as long as they're playing San Diego anyway), and the Dodger are playing Colorado. Five games back!

I know they're only teasing us, but what the heck. It's been a horrifying season and we'll take whatever we can get. ;)

man its about playoff time, just a few more weeks!!! I have a feeling the Angels are not going to just roll over and die like they did with Boston last year, Go Angels!!!

Hey, he's been limping around in left field for the last three years; those gimpy knees are what we're used to around here. I'm just glad we have a relatively young centerfielder in Winn to run down the balls in the gap. Next year, with Bonds in left and Alou in right, Randy is going to be eligible for mileage discounts.

Yes, it has been a terrible season (how do your bums win any games with that lineup?) but it all starts again in October. Do you think this Padres team can hold up through September to get to the post season? While the odds are still in their favor, this may get interesting. ;)

The NL West does seem like a joke this year with the Padres leading the division being a game under 500, If the Cardinals can't win the first round they should just be kicked out of the league. Yankees and Devil Rays play an important series in what is do or die time for the Yankees, Not chasing the Red Sox as they are playing to well to catch so its Yankees Indians for the next month.

Uh, have you actually watched any of the Sox games this year? I swear, half of those wins were by sheer luck. And of course, Wakey has no luck. 9 innings, 1 ER, 12 SO, and he STILL can't win :(
