As far as I remember, the reasons were that Smith interviewed better, appeared to have better football smarts and seemed to have stronger arm-strength etc. I suspect that the Telford QBs NFL records probably counted against Rodgers too. Until Rodgers actually starts playing, it's going to be tough to say who got the better end of the deal. I wanted them to take Rodgers; I felt a guy playing for the team he'd always supported would always have that little bit extra heart if everything else was equal.

I think they'd decided long before to take Smith but didn't say anything in the hope that someone would think the top of the draft was tight and trade up. Unfortunately, that led to Rodgers sitting in NY for a long time; I had a lot of respect for the way he handled the cameras on him for those hours.

Yeah I thought it was pretty mature about him doing that without making any negative comments. Unlike A. Smith who makes the excuse of "The ball feels wierd" about him fumbling. Anything except "The ball felt wierd" is at least a mature excuse.

OK guys, need a little fantasy advice here...

I've got Bledsoe & Brees at QB. My opponent has Antonio Gates at TE.

Do I play Bledsoe against a Redskins D with injuries in a game they need to win? Or Brees against the Colts D in a game they need to win, given that they were allowing Jacksonville to move the ball towards the end of last week's game?

Playoffs

You want to know the craziest thing about the playoff picture? Suppose San Diego and Pittsburgh win out, and are 11-5. If Jacksonville wins out, and goes 12-4, Pittsburgh gets the last spot, and San Diego becomes the first team in 20+ years to go 11-5 and miss the playoffs. If Jacksonville goes 2-1, however, then Jacksonville & San Diego go, and Pittsburgh misses the playoffs.

In all likelihood, one of San Diego or Pittsburgh will lose one more game, and the other will win out, and we won't have that scenario. Still, that Jacksonville game is really coming back to haunt the Steelers...

Wow, I didn't realize that was the case! 11-5 and missing the playoffs, ouch! Mind you, one of the reasons that probably hasn't happened in 20+ years is because there used to be more wild card teams allowed into the playoffs - entry into the playoffs a little more limited now. Granted, there are 4 division winners instead of 3, but still, as you've shown in your exmaple, that can lead to some interesting situations as a result - i.e. (hypothetically) a 9-7 team winning an anemic division, but two 11-5 teams fighting in a tough division with a diviosn winner like Indy for a wild card berth, and one of them missing out.

So when do we get to see Seattle show Indy how a real football team plays? I just can't see Indy being able to defeat Seattle, but then again I cant see Indy surviving the playoffs either.

When the playoffs start everyone is 0-0 ;)

Ed

Edit: 12/24 is the game where Indy finally loses :D

San Diego is not going to make the playoffs. Here's their next 3 games.

At Indy
At Kansas City
Home against Broncos (Broncos will probably have division wrapped up but will still be fighting for the #2 seed)

No way they win all those games. Pittsburgh also has the head to head tie-breaker because they beat the Chargers a couple months ago.

I have more faith in Brees than I do Bledsoe. Pluse Brees is going to be indoors and Bledsoe is gonna in a cold, and possibly windy, FedEx Field.

and my opinion has nothing to do w/the fact that I have faith that my 'Skins will step up and rattle Bledsoe. :p

New England -> Buffalo -> Dome

Well maybe he's softened a little, but I think he'll remember quickly.

Wasn't meaning to imply Bledsoe can't throw in could weather. Just that, in general, the passing game (both throwing and catching) is harder outdoors in the cold and than in a dome.

Given two comparable players (at least statistically) I'm gonna go w/the one that's got more favorable playing conditions.

I'm sorry, I just see the Skinny D as much softer thank the Indy D.

And the Dallas O hasn't put up the stats that the San Diego O has.

Washington has a solid, if banged up, D. But they spend too much time on the field because the O has trouble sustaining drives and scoring.

Relatively speaking I think there is a good amount of parity between the two games which is why I think the game in the dome will produce higher passing numbers.

Hmm, perhaps I'll just toss a coin.

I think I'm haunted by the last time I played Brees (coincidentally the last time I played this opponent) when he had a shocker and scored me 2 points.

Then again, with Bledsoe it can turn into a fumblerooski festival at times. Part of me is tempted by the thought that at least if Gates has a huge game on my opponents team, Brees should have a reasonable one too!

But I can just see LT getting 5 TDs on the ground while Bledsoe throws 3 TDs to Glenn....argh!

Yeah, with big games like these sometimes logic just goes out the window because of the "any given sunday" effect. I think the Chargers have more to play for than the Colts do at this point and with a rivalry as heated as Dallas vs DC anything can happen (especially sense the teams are more equal now than they have been in years).

I vote for coin toss. ;)

Just what I needed to see to start my NFL weekend. Now the Panthers can beat the Saints and retain soul possesion of first in the NFC south

Hats off to the Charger's D. They completely shut down Indy. I can't remember the last time Manning had so much pressure constantly get to him. Brees had 2 picks and a lost fumble but they still won. You don't see that happen much in the NFL especially against a team as good as the Colts.

Colts are now 13 -1, I humbly open myself to public ridicule:)

Actually congrats to the Chargers, they outplayed us on almost every level and we just couldn't keep up. Oh well at least now the pressure for the perfect season is off and we can focus on the real prize...

And they will be 13-2 next Saturday after the Seahawks have their way with them :D

Hmm, perhaps Seattle looking forward to next week's game was the reason they almost got caught out by the Titans!

Wasn't entirely surprised by the Chargers win; they needed it more after all. Although I was surprised how they managed to hold it together in the second half. Now watching the Cowboys/Redskins game, it's looking like I should have taken Brunell rather than Brees (tho the first half was looking good!) or Bledsoe! The good news is that I have Cooley ;) the bad news is that my opponent had Hasselbeck :(

I guess Houston got tried of all those 'throwing the game' comments since they managed to not let Arizona score in the final minutes to win the game. And took themselves out of pole position in the Bush sweepstakes. The Niners despite only turning the ball over once, perhaps Smith is improving, are now in first pick position thanks to relative strength (or not) of schedule.

I've been listening to the Lions broadcast on and off during tonight and you can definitely hear the 'FIRE MILLEN' chants still going on during the 3rd quarter. The team play-by-play guys are just talking over it and not mentioning it and you can hear the level of music they're pumping in to try and drown it out. Highly amusing; I wonder if Mooch is smiling wryly in Iron Mountain? ;)

Incidentally, how surprising is the Cowboys performance at the moment; I might have given the Skins the win but not by this margin!

Yeah I didn't see a blowout like this.... I'm waiting for the Skins to sit Brunell and put in the rookie, since this game is over anyway

The 'Skins D is just tearing it up. I really hope the front office can keep Greg Williams on the Washington sideline. Now that the front 4 are healthy again the D is playing like it was the first part of the season (largely during their losing stretch the D-line was really banged up).

I was afraid the 'Boys would be able to take advantage of the 'Skins injured secondary but the D-line did such a great job that Bledsoe spent more time fearing for his life than throwing the ball.
