Coach Lovie Smith has to be concerned that Rex Grossman's poor play is going to cost the Bears a game in the playoffs. It's not the fact that he is playing badly that is especially disconcerting -- because all young quarterbacks struggle -- it's the fact that he doesn't compensate for his poor play. Grossman starts to press and then he tries to go deep instead of shortening the field and taking what the defense is giving him.
It's almost as if he's still stuck in Steve Spurrier's offense at Florida where he could rely on his superior athletes at receiver to bail him out deep. He has to realize that in the NFL, the deep balls he's throwing into double coverage are going to end up getting him and his team into even more trouble.
Because of this over-reliance on the deep ball, the Bears might seriously have to consider bringing Brian Griese in to start games. This offense doesn't need to do much to win games because of the superiority of the defense. Griese understands that and won't try to do too much. I still believe Grossman is the future for this team, but the Bears are a team that can win a title now.
