I do agree for the most part but then I recall that Falcons @ Green Bay playoff game a few years ago... and remember that in the playoffs, you can't rely on anything any longer. In the last couple of years, aren't the road teams ahead of the home teams in playoff winning percentages?
I believe you are correct. Pittsburgh was 3 for 3 last year, Carolina was 2 for 3 (beat Giants, beat Chicago)... in 2004, Carolina was 2 for 2 on the road in the playoffs (Rams, Eagles).

Seems like road teams get more fired up to win than home teams, at least in the early part of the playoffs.

My predictions for the year.....

If the Packers show any sort of offensive line effectiveness this year, Favre will break Marino's TD pass record.

Favre will also retire after this season unless the Packers make the playoffs in which case he will come back to try for another Super Bowl, and given the performance last year, I'd put my money on retirement.

I'd offer more predictions but I only follow one team.

He needs 25. He had 20 last year with a really #$%^% offensive line at the beginning of the year which hurt the running game and made the pass too obvious. His past years are as follows

2000 - 20
2001 - 32
2002 - 27
2003 - 32
2004 - 30
2005 - 20

I think 25 is feasible especially if the offensive line is any good and the receiving core stays healthy. Since the playoff shot is slim I would imagine him taking more shots at the end-zone this season to make the record as well.

Yup, as usual I was wrong. Although my prediction about Favre's retirement might have been unintentionally correct. Although I'm kind of hoping I was wrong. The Pack didn't do half bad this year for such a young team and I'm actually agreeing with some of the announcers from tonight's game about using the salary cap room to pick up some good short term fixes for their problems and try for one last Super Bowl run next year.

Of course I will keep watching regardless but it would be nice to see Favre go out on a better year than 8-8.

That sucks. Pissed fan? Pissed gambler? Random violence?

Anyway...

Playoffs are set.

As a pats fan, I'm not too pleased to see the Jets coming to town. Former Belichick protégé Mangini surely knows a trick or two on NE.
And despite a record of 12-4, the Pats haven't been exactly playing up to par this season. Or at the very least, they are terribly inconsistent.

I expect an uncomfortably close game with the Pats coming out on top, 31-27.

I have to go with the Jets here. Mangini almost beat Belichick the first time they played, and Mangini beat him the second time. Almost sure doesn't count in the record book, but it seems like Mangini has his number being able to almost do it on his first try and then win @ NE. A win @ NE is not very common. I think the game boils down to the defense, and the Jets have the advantage.

The Jets are carrying some good momentum into the playoffs. I think the Pats expect to win playoff games ... because well we all know the history. I think they expected to win last year it just didn't work out that way. The injury to Harrison seems like definitely no playing this week and maybe not for the playoffs.

I had a big long response and Safari crashed on me.. let me try and duplicate it.

Harrison getting hurt sucks, no doubt, but the Pats went 4-2 without him while he was out with a broken shoulder blade.

I totally disagree about your assessment of the Jet's defense having the edge. Statistically speaking, the Pats have the 6th ranked defense in the NFL, compared to the Jets' 20th ranked defense. Even allowing for 10 rankings (a serious gift) on the part of Mangini's protégé status, I think the Jets come up short. Especially considering the Pats 11th ranked offense, compared to the Jets' 25th ranked offense!

As for playoff history.. in the last 6 years, the Jets have gone 0-3 in the Playoffs, compared to the Pats' 10-1 post season record. Now, one could argue both ways on this (The Jets want it because they haven't had it / The Pats will be calm about it since they've been there before / etc).

I still think it will be a close game, but the Pats will prevail.

As for the Jets, congrats to them on turning around from an 4-12 season to a surprising playoff run.

Come on Saints!

Two games to win, and we make it to he big dance for the first time ever.

I have absolutely no faith it will happen, but for it to even be a remote possibility is pretty awesome.

I'd actually argue that the Jets under Mangini are the team thats playing, and well he hasn't coached them in the playoffs so I don't really care what the post season of the Jets is.

We all like to think our team is going to win. I don't really care about the Jets except for the fact that I think they're going to win sunday, and i'm rooting for that.

All that being said ... GO BEARS

LaDainian Tomlinson won the AP NFL MVP award today. By a landslide at that.

He really has been fun to watch this season and hope he can continue to do well throughout the playoffs. Though the last two games have not been as good as his eight games prior. The week off will help since the Chargers haven't had a bye since week 3 of the season.

Go Chargers! I suffered through too many of their bad seasons when I lived in San Diego. It would be nice to see them finally win even though they aren't exactly my home team anymore.

Was glad to see him win although I was a little surprised that Brees didn't make it a little closer. But who the heck voted for Peyton this year? Two votes; why? Peyton's contract means that the Colts are always going to struggle putting a decent defense on the field and we've seen the partial results of that this year. And it's not like he needs the money given the endorsements that he does too. I'm crossing my fingers that the Chiefs let Larry Johnson run all over them this weekend. ;)

To go back a few days, I was v chuffed that the Niners knocked the Broncos out since I've never really liked Denver - bad hangover when they won the Superbowl combined with those dodgy O-line tactics.

I'd like the Chargers, Chiefs or Saints to win the Superbowl this year. I wouldn't mind the Bears (so long as Grossman shows up) or the Jets (so long as the HD cameras show up - the pics from the Meadowlands always seem to look awful - not sure if it's them calibrating for the Jets green that causes everything else to look washed out). Don't want the Colts, the Ravens or the Giants to win - the others... ho hum.

Yeah I thought that Brees deserved at least a few more votes. Specially for what he has done for turning around the Saints. Hopefully Payton gets the coach of the year award.

I couldn't be happier for the Niners too. Knocking out Denver was awesome though for a Charger fan it was almost pick your divisional poison since that allowed KC to get in.

Well you are in luck since the Jets are on the road for this entire playoffs. The only possibility of playing in the meadowlands is if KC and the Jets both make it to the AFC title game. Though its going to be played in San Diego so need to worry about shoddy HD. :D (I'm knocking on my wood desk so I don't jinx anything)

My mom is from Indiana so I kind of cheered for the Colts though after the whole Eli Manning thing I have a harder time going for the Colts. I don't like the Ravens and still thing we could have won the game in week 4 if we didn't have conservative play calling late in the game. and I can't go for the Giants because of Eli Manning and his "I don't want to play in San Diego" shtick and I take great pleasure in his lack of performance of late.

The one thing football has over baseball, announcing the MVP before the playoffs. Yes I am still bitter that Derek Jeter didn't win AL MVP.

Next is the Madden cover and his season is ruined.

Major League Baseball seems to like to stretch the season out as long as possible, so we go from pitchers and catchers to everybody spring training to spring training games to regular season games then to trades / hot stove. then all star game, then trade deadline, then playoff specualtion then playoffs then world series then a week then the awards (cy young / mvp / roy) then theres winter conferences and bam it starts all over again.

I wish that baseball followed the pattern of football in this department.

Just got in, but there's quite a Wild Card finish going on in Seattle.
D'oh. Drammatica Grammatica Mathmatica Bonor.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez I feel bad for Tony Romo right now.
It's the kind of play and ending of a season that unfortunately he'll play over in his mind until he can file it properly. I didn't stick around to watch recaps, but it didn't seem the snap from center was all that bad.
