Well they certainly now look like longtime cheaters to me.

And, a memo from Ray Anderson, NFL head of football operations, to head coaches and GMs on Sept. 6, 2006 said: "Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

It seems difficult to interpret that in any way other than "don't videotape signals."

Though I am still a Pats fan, I deplore cheating.

I had a great time in the Foxboro parking lots and I love the sport of American football more than any one team. What bothers me most about these allegations is that the Pats were warned and seemed to continue anyhow which kinda goes against the spirit of the game.

I'm a Niners fan and yes, I know there were the salary cap discrepancies in 1994 but with the relative newness of the cap back then, they were dodgy but pushing the boundaries. These continued offences against the rules do bother me...

I'm with you on that, yellow. I've had a love/hate respect for the Pats since the field goal that beat the LAMS in SuperBowl something or other, and have sung the praises of Belichick's genius and a true team-like philosophy in NE. If the spin gets more intense with harder evidence, I hope they take the higher road rather than smugging it off. That could bring NE more south.

Punishment is in.

Belichick gets fined $500k, Kraft $250k.

Patriots lose one of their two first round 2008 draft picks if they make the playoffs, or a 2nd and 3rd rounder if they miss the playoffs.

Seems pretty fair to me. It's over now, let's move on and play some football this weekend. The Pats are going to kick the Chargers ass and shut them up for good, because you know there's no way the Pats will be cheating this weekend. Goodell will be watching like a hawk.

edit: ha, I even beat ESPN.com and SI.com with reporting the story. :)

Good going on the report! How did you get it so fast? Are you using video cameras or bugging the NFL's head office? :D

They'll be under a microscope from here on out...And I agree..Bring on week 2...

Exactly.. so let's prove to the rest of the country that this **** had no effect on the real games that they actually did this in. Put all the questions of "did they tape when they won the superbowls? would they have won all those games if they weren't taping?" to rest.

Oh, you know one thing that pisses me off. Chargers fans bitching about the Patriots "cheating". Look at Merriman.

Just broke on local news..It's going to be interesting to see how this ruling affects the Kraft/Belichick relationship..

I'm sure Kraft drops 250K in change on the way from the bank to his car.

And Belichick brought him championships money couldn't buy. (Maybe cheated them out of the other team's hands but couldn't buy them. ;))

If spying on the other team doesn't mean anything, then why do it? And it spying on the other team doesn't mean anything, why do it after HQ has said not to do it?

The obvious answer is that the Patriots saw more benefit in spying than the repercussions of getting caught.

Merriman tarnished his reputation too. I think most people find that Bonds, Merriman and other low level employees actions are not as egregious as this coach's. It's one thing for an employee to do something and another for the boss.

Well the Pat's haters are having orgasms right now. They've been waiting for this opp since the Pats bitch slapped the Rams up and down the field at the Superdome..Most of the haters probly had the Rams -14...

No s**t? Gee I woulda never known  One thing Kraft has NEVER liked is bad publicity..This is about as bad as it gets,in the publicity dept.

Well, I don't live in Boston so I'll take your word for it. From the outside, I can see how he might get mad about this exceptionally bad day but cut the boy some slack because of what he has done on his very good days.

From the outside, you wouldn't know, and that's understandable.. From the Christian Peter incident,to releasing players with off field problems, even cutting back on season ticket holders reselling tickets, the guy just doesn't like negative publicity. Lots happens locally that the national media doesn't pick up on..And let's face it,Belichick isn't exactly ingratiated with the local and national media anyways..The guy could start a mutiny in a confessional...

Belichick is an ass. People don't cut *******s slack. Look at Bonds, Bill Parcells and Pete Rose.

I can remember my first thoughts when this story broke. "Figures!", I thought.

If the same story had broken about Tony Dungy? I would have been in SHOCK. And would have forgiven him if he admitted to a moment of weakness.

And that, in essence, is the difference between good and bad men and the harvest they each reap from the seeds they have sown.

I had no idea. That is commendable.

I'd hate for the NFL to have the same reputation as the NBA ("thugs, gangstas, hip hop"...). I can't support that crap. It is teetering on the fence right now. A few more Tank Johnson's, Cincinnati Bengal off-seasons, cheaters, dog fighters and HGH abusers and it's over for some of us.

Well it gets called the National Fellon League for a reason. Gooddell has a full plate right now. He also has 32 owners to answer to. Michael Vick sure is happy today..Haven't heard his name mentioned at all..

And the Cowboys are considering signing Tank Johnson, since the loss of Jason Ferguson.

Well it gets called the National Fellon League for a reason.

A few months ago Paul Tagliabue left his position as NFL commissioner as a hero. Now we can all see how he was a master at stuffing stuff into a closet.

Goodell was handed the keys, looked around the office and saw that it was good. He walked over to the closet to hang up his jacket and all hell broke loose. :(

Oh yeah... 'cause the Pats REALLY need to steal signals to beat the Packers.

Frankly Belichick doesn't strike me as the kind of coach who needs to steal signals. Physically the Pats O-line is significantly larger than the Jet's D-Line. It's not like Brady didn't get hurried or knocked down all day.

As far as I am concerned, until this is PROVEN to be cheating, it's all speculation and all you people that hate the Pats are just looking for any excuse.

so. why would they videotape it if they didn't think it helped? to show their kids in a few years? ;)

Damn, I wish I could watch the week 2 game.

I'm just glad Belichick didn't get suspended. I think losing a draft pick will suck. But oh well, time to move on...
