I thought we had this year with Hull???:rolleyes:
Oi, you cheeky bugger. We're not obsc... oh.

Last thing I remember about Brid Town's ground was that it was getting demolished when the club folded. The club was then reformed from the Greyhound pub team who some of my mates played for :)
Indeed, the Greyhound team wanted to use Queensgate and were told they could, on condition that they adopted the name and colours of the old club. So, while some unkind types may refer to a side as 'playing like a pub team', they'd have a point with Brid. ;)

Plenty I wanted to write about this week about the SPL coming down to the last day, but haven't had the time.

At school, in a city as polarised as Glasgow, we would ask teachers what team they supported (expecting one of the Old Firm as an answer) but the standard get out clause was they normally said the mighty Partick Thistle:). You will find them in the SFL 1st division, just missed out on promotion this year and always on the look out for traveling support.

Firhill for thrills!

Fuzzy - when I was a little Jaffa, there was a sports shop in town. In the window they had, as part of their display, a selection of sweatbands in team colours. Naturally they had the likes of Liverpool, Leeds and City, but in there - for as long as I remember and gradually fading in the sunlight - was a pair of Partick Thistle wristbands. I suppose there wasn't much demand for them in the East Riding. :p

I reckon they're probably still there, actually.

Little eye on the provinces

Had the rare pleasure of enjoying a match at Ibrox on Saturday. First to get onto the unfortunate Lafferty business which made the headlines, to us in the crowd it looked like the challenge was made, both players got up the Aberdeen fella who’s name escapes me walked towards the Rangers player and a little contact was made, Lafferty fell to the ground like a screaming banshee. Even to the crowd it was obvious that Lafferty had made the most of it. Trying to second guess the ref initially we thought the ref knew Lafferty was taking liberties, sent off the Aberdeen fella for retaliating in first place and booked Lafferty for the dive. Maybe a bit harsh, but when you get up you should walk away not confront the other player so we thought definite yellow, harsh red. The Rangers sending off was quite harsh too, just one of those footballing things, we thought c’est la vie (or the Govan equivalent) it was just the ref trying to even things up.

TV now shows that no contact was made and the ref was fooled by Lafferty and I think the club have done the right thing sorting him out. Now Rangers were denied a goal a couple of weeks ago that in hindsight would have won them the league, now these sendings off need to be reviewed and players reinstated. Why oh why oh why is this the only sport that doesn’t use TV evidence at the time? Answers on a postcard to: When Hell Freezes Over.

And so onto the swings of the league. Rangers beat Celtic, advantage Rangers. Hibs drew with Rangers, advantage Celtic. Rangers beat Aberdeen, Celtic drew with Hibs, advantage Rangers. So coming into the final game, Rangers are 2 points clear and have a difficult Dundee United at Tanadice who need at least a point to secure a European place. Celtic face Hearts at Tynecastle who aren’t playing for anything (Europe secured). Aberdeen need to beat Hibs to get that 2nd European place and Hibs aren’t playing for anything but have been absolutely brilliant in their last few matches. Where would you park the helicopter with the trophy??? (it famously had to turn around a few years back after a late equaliser at Fir Park)

I have no idea what’s going on in the bottom half of the table other than any one of 4 teams could get relegated on the final day. I’ve got a feeling it will be Falkirk but St Mirren have been trying their best to chuck it all away at the end.

Remember my prediction a couple of weeks back? Liverpool to win the title, Newcastle to get relegated? Gah! Lets see if I were partially correct.

Hmm, I was hoping for a "Acrington Stanley, who are they?" :(

;)

i say we make a poll and go from there.

WIKIPEDIA:
Accrington Stanley
Accrington_Stanley_FC.png

Not to be confused with Accrington Stanley F.C. (1891) or Accrington F.C., separate clubs from the same town.

Accrington Stanley Football Club is an English football club from Accrington in Lancashire, in the north-west of England.
The club was formed in 1968, with the town regaining a club with league status after 44 years when they were promoted as champions of the Nationwide Conference on 15 April 2006.
The club has been owned by Chairman Eric Whalley since the mid 1990s and employs Robert Heys, who joined the club in 2002, as Chief Executive.
Accrington had been without a football team following the collapse of the original Accrington Stanley in 1966. The original team had been formed in 1891, and played in The Football League from 1921 to 1961; it had spent its final four seasons in the Lancashire Combination. In a meeting in the town library in October 1968 the revival was started and in August 1970 the new club played at a new ground, the Crown Ground. Since their formation, Stanley have climbed the non-League pyramid to reach The Football League. Eric Whalley, a local businessman, took control of the club in 1995 and started the development of the club's ground. After the club was relegated in 1999, Whalley appointed John Coleman as manager. In 2005-06, Stanley won the Football Conference and were promoted to League Two, switching places with relegated Oxford United - ironically, the team that was elected to replace the former Accrington Stanley as members of the Football League in 1962.
The club's recent rise to the Conference level, and eventually to the League, is attributed in part to the windfall of hundreds of thousands of pounds reaped by the sell-on clause in the December 2001 transfer of former Stanley star Brett Ormerod to Southampton, who paid Blackpool over a million pounds for his contract. Stanley had taken £50,000 from Blackpool in 1997 with the agreement that Blackpool would pay Accrington a quarter of what they might have received if they in turn transferred Ormerod to another team. The 2002-03 championship of the Northern Premier League followed quickly on Accrington's getting the cash. Further funds were raised with the sale of J.Gray to Stirling Albion.
On 21 August 2006, Accrington Stanley won their first ever Football League Cup match, beating Nottingham Forest 1–0. Their first appearance in the second round resulted in a loss on penalties against at the time Premiership team Watford at Vicarage Road.
2006-07 saw Accrington Stanley finish 20th in League Two, and in 2007-08 they improved slightly to finish 17th.
The club also has a women's team playing in the Lancashire FA Women's County League Division One.
In 2008, the club was the subject of a documentary series, titled "Accrington Stanley... Exactly!", a reference to the famous advert (below), broadcast only in the Granada region, as part of ITV1's regional programming.
On the 26th March 2009, Eric Whalley announced he would be selling his stake in the club and stepping down as chairman after 14 years.

The original town team, Accrington, were amongst the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888, before resigning from the league after just five years. A team called Stanley Villa already existed at the time, named as such because they were based at the Stanley W.M.C. on Stanley Street in Accrington. With the demise of Accrington, Stanley Villa took the town name to become Accrington Stanley. There was also a team originally based in West London called Stanley who played against the likes of Fulham and Queens Park Rangers in the late 19th Century before folding.
Stanley were pushing for fans in the Asian, mainly Chinese market (similar to Manchester United) for revenue, calling themselves "the world's most famous little club". However this never really took off.
The club published on their website, as an April Fools Joke, the suggestion that they were considering a name change to Lancashire Stanley United, in order to broaden their fan base. However, because of the positive reaction, the club decided to seriously consider the change.

Accrington Stanley gets my vote, I think my suggestion (Partick Thistle) are actually a bit too well known.

If you may indulge me for a moment, one of my old collegues Steve "InTheNet" Taylor being an Englishman is a mad fan of Inverness Caley Thistle. For the last couple of years, him and a few mates have decided to walk from the penultimate game to the final game of the season. Of course, this is not difficult enough for Steve so he normally bags a few Munros on the way.

This year, it was Kilmarnock on 16 May, leave at final whistle and walk 175 miles to Inverness to arrive on 23 May, they are currently somewhere near Aviemore.

Of course this is all for charity mate, here is their official website and some news stories about them if you'd like to learn some more.

And if that's not enough, in August they plan to do the Scotland game in Oslo and walk back to Hampden (I think a ferry will be involved at some point.)

Anybody fancy doing one to Accrington Stanley's home ground?;)

Fine work by your friend, Fuzzy - you'll have to let us know when he completes his trek.

To be honest, my 'adopt a team' suggestion was a little tongue in cheek, but I suppose Stanley have kind of become endeared to us a bit on this and previous threads. Of course, for us UKers of a certain age their name will always raise a smile because of that advert... ;)

Great work by your friend. Will check out the website fully later on

Walking directions to Accrington, Lancashire BB5 5BX, UK
188 mi – about 2 days 15 hours

See you on Sunday at 5 am

At a guess that age is greater than 24 as I have no idea what you are talking about.

It would be good if we could have a little rivalry between adopt a team teams

So some follow Accrington Stanely
Others follow, say, Barnet

The team we face on Sunday won't have any of the big household names in its ranks, but it'll be a very good team and one that is perfectly capable of beating us.
Just been having this discussion at work and I think the Man U team is going to be quite strong. I expect to see:
Ferdinand - It's already been said he's expected to prove his fitness in this game ready for the CL final
Ronaldo - He's currently tied on 18 goals for the PL season with Anelka and I'm sure he wants to win the Golden Boot. Whether Fergie risks him is open to debate though
Van Der Sar - Going for the Golden Glove award
Berbatov - Fergie will want to give him a run out in preparation for the CL final
Tevez - Likely to be his last PL game for Man U so I believe will figure for most of this game
Fletcher - Obviously

With the quality in depth Man U have and some bright looking youngsters (Welbeck, Macehda, Foster, Evans) I really don't rate Hull's chances as I can see Newcastle getting a point at Villa

You disappoint me – as a Liverpool fan, you should know that Accrington Stanley are Ian Rush's favourite cautionary tale to calcium-deprived youngsters. ;)

The ad was from 1988 I believe, so yes it would have been a bit before your time.

In that case, 'adopt a league' would be better and we'd each pick whichever team took our fancy. In this instance, Blue Square Premier/North/South or even a foreign league might be a better bet than Accrington's League Two, which is quite close to home for the actual teams some of us support.

Indeed, a lot of folk seem to be thinking that as United are likely to be fielding a weaker than usual side victory will easily be ours. Not so. Whichever eleven they put out will be more than capable of getting a result – especially as any youngsters who feature are going to be looking to really impress Sir Alex, and they'll no doubt see us as the ideal team to put in a good performance against.

We can get a result on Sunday (after all, no one expected us to beat Arsenal away, and we did put three past a full-strength United at Old Trafford), however it's not going to be an easy task and we need every member of our side playing at their best – something which, let's be honest, hasn't happened for a while.

I reckon we ought to play our reserves. That'll get folk scratching their heads. :D

Since all of Sunday's games kick off at the same time I was wondering which game Fox Soccer Channel here in the US would decide to show. They have decided on Hull City - Man U, so I will be cheering on the Tigers and keeping my web browser refreshed for the hope of Newcastle and Middlesborough's demise.

I applaud your decision – and I'm certain the commentators will keep you fully up-to-date with the scores in the other key matches.

Miss Jaffa Cake is taking her little radio along, so we'll be keeping tabs on Newcastle and Boro that way.

I'll be cheering them on too. Hull are my 2nd most watched live team (as in been to the match) behind the mighty Wednesday :) Although, that was only because I used to get in free. Infact, I think the last time I saw them Dave Walmsley scored 2 goals in Hull City's 3-2 victory over Newcastle on the last day of the season. Maybe a good omen? ;)

I'm good with Acrrington. ;)

Other than what espn36O, espn and espn2 show here I don't have any other footy channels. When I go to my in-laws the have FSC and Hull and West Ham have been on both tie. So they are my most watched.

Fabregas cleared of all charges relating to coming onto the pitch and "spitting" following the Hull City match.

As I mentioned at the time, as it was ultimately a case of one club's word against that of the another nothing would come of it, especially as (as mentioned again today in the BBC's report) none of the match officials were apparently present in the tunnel to witness the alleged incident. An unsurprising but interesting conclusion to this long-running and rather silly saga, I feel.

I also noted this mentioned in the BBC's report;

The investigation into the Fabregas incident was concluded last week but the FA did not want the results to become public until after Hull's crucial match against champions Manchester United on Sunday

Thanks for that FA, top job you've done there.

I was only 4 at the time so hopefully you'll forgive my lack of knowledge :)

Got to love those accents

I plan on following some teams in foreign leagues much more closely next season.

I hope Hull stay up and Burnley win the play-off final.

I'm just want next seasons fight against relegation to be as easy as possible for Wolves. :D

Hopefully Birmingham will go straight back down

Cleared vs. found not proven due to lack of evidence are two different things. That is not to say he got away with it as if there was more evidence it could of proven his innocence or confirmed guilt but it is not correct to say cleared.

Speaking of which, what do you think will be the crucial factor in the FC Barcelona vs. Manchester United game coming on the 27th?

I can say this: how well one Lionel Messi plays. If ManU can't stop Messi (his small size and astonishing scoring ability makes him really hard to stop), I just can't see ManU winning the Champions League title.

Ah, but butter wouldn't melt would it? ;)

Nowt wrong with a bit of foreign footie. One or more of the Scandinavian leagues might be worth a look. Mind, they run spring-autumn rather than autumn-spring unless I'm mistaken.
