I finally saw the highlights of the Arsenal game. The Gunners racked up 28 passes leading up to Adebayor's headed goal...passing it into the net as usual. Oh, and somebody forgot to tell Van Persie to get injured - he's been healthy for a month now!:D

...And how about Stoke's Rory Delap? That guy has a wicked throw-in...it's as dangerous as a corner.

I'd like to think that the three game ban he now faces will be extended when the incident is reviewed by the FA, but I won't go holding my breath or owt.

Considering how many games Fagan will miss, Guthrie certainly deserves more than a three-game ban. Fines aren't any good either.

I've heard it suggested that - in instances like this where a player is injured by an opponent who has no interest in winning the ball - the FA should ban the player for the same amount of time as his victim is out injured. It's not a bad idea in my opinion, and hopefully would make some players consider the consequences of their actions.

Although I can’t condone Guthrie’s actions, Fagan had been kicking NUFC players and than goading them throughout the match, including constantly laughing in their faces when the ref took no actions. He had incensed many of the NUFC players (and the fans) throughout the match, I obviously don’t know what was said but he obviously enjoyed being the bad boy.

Although he had a good game and he did not deserve the broken leg, to paint the picture of the innocent victim is going a bit far in his case. He is a player with history himself (banned in March for stamping) whose style of play is rather ‘unsavoury’.

Guthrie was an idiot to make both those two last minute tackles, he is a young player who does not normally have a dirty side to his game and for some reason lost the plot and must be punished. The intent was to kick Fagan (twice), but the way he went in was not with the intent to break/fracture his leg.

He does, not so much in the blatant style as the last game but his tackles can and will lead to injuries and sendings off if he doesn't sort himself out. He has been this way for a long time now and I haven't really seen much improvement.

Maurice Edu has finally got his working visa sorted and had his first game for us at the weekend. I meant to ask our American cousins what they thought of him, some of my mates at the game thought he did reasonably well (apart from losing an early goal....)

I haven't seen too much of Edu on the pitch, to be honest, but what I have seen of him is pretty good. He's still young and his professional resume is short, so despite his obvious talent he is a work in progress. I was excited to hear that Rangers picked him up though. Hopefully he'll get some playing time.

Is he set to be a starter or is he playing off the bench?

fair enough, I bow to your greater knowledge, although whenever I’ve seen him play he does tackle players with good intentions – except for the those 2 tackles on Fagan. All tackles could cause injuries.

One thing is for sure is that blatant fowl play by John Terry is now encouraged by the FA.

Wow, Terry has had his red card rescinded. Did not expect that to happen.

If I was cynical, I'd say this will only happen when the big four are involved...

...stop me if I'm wrong, but in order to get the red card taken away, didn't Chelsea have to argue that Terry didn't deserve any card, even a yellow? I might agree that his foul was not a straight red, but I'd definitely say it was a yellow. Sure, he wasn't the last man but he pulled Jo down very cynically, no attempt to play the ball whatsoever.

Either way, this isn't the behavior one should expect from the England captain.

EDIT: Saw this photo of Liverpool training. I'll bet I know what they're saying:

liverpool.jpg

Kuyt: Hey Robbie, you're a striker, right? Better start scoring or they'll put you out on the flanks like me!

Keane: Humph, Winger is for berks or pooftahs like Beckham.

Gerrard: *Thinks* Hey, that's where I've played for England...

Shouldn't Drogba be suspended for tonight's CL game?

Edit: Nevermind, he is. The original BBC article said he was available, but they have since changed it.

I am cynical, and it's not when the big four are involved.. it's when England's brave hero John Terry is involved. This was so predictable from the out, that he would have the red rescinded. It was a very cynical rugby tackle, and for no attempt to play the ball I believe the red card was the right decision. Stupid professional fouls like that have to be stamped out and a yellow card is not going to do that.

He's a nasty piece of work, John Terry. Hate him.

Agree, and it's nice to see you again XIII.

Certainly, he's no angel but that's no excuse for what Guthrie did. Fagan is an 'irritant' player to put it nicely, one of those who is very good at winding opponents up. Mind, Guthrie will face a lot, lot worse than Fagan in this regard as his career progresses, and he can't go lashing out every time an opponent winds him up. We can but hope he's learnt his lesson this weekend.

You're right about Fagan having a chequered past, including his ban for what he did to Liverpool's Alvaro Arbeloa last season, but again you can't go saying that means he deserves his current injury. Fagan was rightly punished for his actions at the time (a four match ban after the FA reviewed the incident, which wasn't spotted by the referee) just as Guthrie should now be punished for his. It doesn't matter what a player's disciplinary record is like, it's not an open licence to take them out if frustration gets the better of you.

One thing that I was appalled by was the reaction of a section of the St James' Park crowd who seemed to be applauding Guthrie off after his dismissal (he himself acknowledged this applause as he walked to the tunnel), equally so the comments I've read from some Newcastle supporters claiming that Fagan deserved what happened to him due to the winding up he'd been doing during the match (though as you say B&WToon you're not condoning what happened so I'm not aiming these comments at yourself). I wonder if these supporters will be so generous if, say, Michael Owen gets intentially clattered and injured in his next match?

I think you might be right. Terry seems to get away with a heck of a lot. What would have happened if Joey Barton had made that tackle on Jo? Both have a history of foul play, yet Terry seems to avoid real punishment. Will it take an Eduardo-like injury for him to really get in trouble?

To be fair, Barton is a thug off the field as well as on it, but calls need to be consistent...

EDIT: After watching the foul again, I'd say that it's a very cynical haul-down, but not "violent conduct". I'd give it a yellow. I still don't see how Terry gets it taken away though.

Thanks ESPN360.com for carrying some CL live broadcasts. I'll get to watch the Bordeaux match now (not the Chelsea one, ).

They are showing the Chelsea-Bordeaux CL match live on ESPN2. Unfortunately, Setanta has the rest so I can't watch the Liverpool match.:(

Yes, but who's shorts will you be wearing this time? :D

He started and lasted the whole of the game (which you would expect from a young chappie.) The goal wasn't his fault.

Claudio Reyna is still loved in Glasgow hopefully Edu is in the same mould. We'll soon drive out any ball skills he has, toughen him up and teach him how to punt the ball the length of the park.

With DaMarcus Beasley on the side too we are turning into an ex-pat side!

:D Don't you dare go corrupting our youth.

I've thought Beasley has had a questionable touch at times, but in recent USA matches I've watched he's been pretty solid. He's a big guy, good in the air. Good in set pieces.
