One thing that I was appalled by was the reaction of a section of the St James' Park crowd who seemed to be applauding Guthrie off after his dismissal (he himself acknowledged this applause as he walked to the tunnel), equally so the comments I've read from some Newcastle supporters claiming that Fagan deserved what happened to him due to the winding up he'd been doing during the match (though as you say B&WToon you're not condoning what happened so I'm not aiming these comments at yourself). I wonder if these supporters will be so generous if, say, Michael Owen gets intentially clattered and injured in his next match?

I have to agree Jaffa, there were shouts just before the incident by NUFC fans of “kick the cu*t” and “snap his ferking legs”, this is unfortunately the sort of moronic attitude of some ‘fans’. It’s not just NUFC fans who do this as I have heard similar remarks directed at NUFC players on many occasions and have even heard it at schoolboy level by their cretinous parents.

If any player acts out this vile attitude then they need to be severely punished, but alas it’s rarely the case.

Guthrie gets off with 3 match ban. BBC report link

Well done to the FA – they're sending out a very clear message to players that this sort of behaviour won't be tolerated.

Indeed, I saw a very funny but trueful email sent to football365 the other day in regards to Terry.

Just caught the highlights of the Celtic Aalborg match yet another example of great refereeing

2121: SENDING OFF
Michael Beauchamp is sent off for Aalborg at Celtic Park for a professional foul on Georgios Samaras. But it's a case of mistaken identity as the foul was actually committed by Michael Jakobsen. Is it really that hard to see, between all those officials? Really.

Today on Sky Sports news they mentioned that the FA doesn't have any mechanism for automatically increasing bans. They mentioned that they (the FA) are considering s sliding scale of bans for red card offenses.

I say that it's time the FA pulled their finger out and did something...Guthrie deserve more than a 3-match ban for what he did...

Didn't the FA learn anything from the Eduardo injury last season? Granted, it was more bad timing than malicious intent, but it should have gotten them thinking about longer bans for offenses that result in serious injury.

Well, I got to experience something rather amazing that I wasn't expecting yesterday.

A friend rang me at work and asked if I would like to go down to Manchester with them and watch the Villreal game . 'Sure' I said, 'Where are your tickets?' Turns out, his Dad has a directors box.

Ace. 3 course meal, drinks all paid for, amazing view. Just a shame about the piss poor game.

Markleshark = prawn sandwich muncher ;)

+1.

Lucky bastard. I've been at an executive box once for a professional sports event (a Major League Baseball game), and it was quite an eye-opener. All kinds of good food, couches and a TV in case you're too lazy to walk over to your little private terrace and watch the game live. :rolleyes:It just isn't the same as sitting in the stands with everyone else though.

My dad has been to Wembley a couple of times in corporate boxes and he said while it was amazing he would still rather be out with the great unwashed. It would be good for a one off though.

I'm of to see Stoke at Anfield at the weekend :D Obviously not that great a match to watch as my sister's contacts with the season tickets had quite a few to give out.

I've promised myself that someday I'll get to Anfield. I'll probably have to wait until I finish my PhD, but It'll be worth the wait. I'd love to go on a European night...

...in the meantime I'll content myself with seeing Columbus Crew matches, like the one I'm off to tonight. Still top o' the league! :)

I kinda agree with the FA's point about fixture congestion though.
As I said in the previous thread, they should think about running these as U21 tournaments to help blood our youngsters in some competitive fixtures.

And maybe – as a bonus – when it comes around to an Olympic year whichever nation holds the title gets to represent the UK?* For one thing, it would save all that arguing about 'Team GB'.

*Unless it's the Republic of Ireland of course, that would be silly.

I wish Liverpool could take one of those goals from you pachyderm...they've laid siege to the Stoke goal the entire game so far, with no effect. We need these three points.

EDIT:
Hate stoke hate stoke hate stoke hate stoke hate stoke hate stoke hate stoke....

Draws like these are precisely what ruined our campaign last season. Stoke defended very well, to be fair, but with the offensive firepower Liverpool bring, playing at home, we should have taken them apart. Period.

There's no reason to hate Stoke, you Lordship - they did exactly what was required of them and worked hard to gain a well-earned point which, come the end of the season, could prove vital to them.

Liverpool should have had the quality to win, but once again we're seeing that old inability to finish teams off. Hopefully Rafa won't have sorted it out by the time we play them. ;)

I should be more magnanimous in defeat, but I'm shocked that Liverpool didn't score even one goal. Had someone predicted this result to me yesterday I would have laughed in their face.

To be fair, it was always going to be 11 men behind the ball for Stoke, but any team in the top four should be able to win that game. Granted, I heard that the call on the disallowed goal was dodgy...in the end it's rotten luck for Liverpool and good defense from Stoke.

Robbie Keane is still waiting for that first goal, despite a Kuyt-like work rate.

If the football gods have any mercy on Liverpool Arsenal will lose to Bolon and tomorrow's big clash will end Man United 0 - 0 Chelski with two red cards apiece. ;)

So the long throw-in didn't work today???

More of a shock than Liverpool drawing with Stoke is Birmingham losing to Blackpool. And to top it off, Wolves are now clear at the top. Queue gloating from OllyW

raiders all the way

Guessing you read the thread title but not one of the nearly 1300 posts... Wrong type of football
