I heard someone wonder the other day about whether Newcastle might go the way of Leeds United, collapsing in every possible way and disappearing from the international scene. It's looking more likely every day right now.

Sky sports was reporting that David O'Leary could take over and he said he'd jump at the opportunity. With O'Leary and Wise involved this has deja'vu written all over it.

Thoughts on the "Uefa Europa League" is it just a money grabbing exercise? If it leads to more football on the telly the it is a good thing. However the quality of some of the games in there this past year was so dire ...

Good to see new blood enter this thread (including mouchoir as well):) Rather interesting sounding biography you have.

Hey Nieval, in which Cleveland are you located (US or UK)? I was born and raised in the American version...

I don't know what I think yet....Euro 2008 hosted some of the best football I've ever seen, but I only caught 3-4 games. Expanding to 24 teams will prevent a lot of nations from hosting (i.e., the Poland and Ukraine scenario), and might lead to boring matches like early World Cup qualifiers...

Then again, like you said, we might get more games to watch.

Someone also deviously pointed out that expanding to 24 teams would allow England to participate. :D

IWarnock is just so tiresome.
There – fixed that for you. :D

Of course it is – like the Champions League, the introduction of group stages is simply a way of keeping the 'biggish' clubs (ie, those not quite big enough for the Champions League) in European competition longer, meaning more money for the clubs and more revenue for UEFA. Don't get me started on this, I could go off on a right rant.

And Joe Kinnear, eh? I really wasn't expecting that. Never mind, B&WToon – despite what the 'experts' may tell you, the Championship is actually quite an exciting league to play in.

One interesting rule change with regards to the UEFA Cup/Europa League:

Currently, if the winning cup finalist has already qualified for the champions league then the losing cup finalist gets a place in the UEFA Cup. This will no longer happen.

I'm in the US but i'm only here to do my USMLE and then i'll be heading back to Reading, UK. I haven't been out much but i like what i've seen so far. Plus i've got family in Akron so i've been there aswell. They say the east side of town is pretty violent but i've yet to be mugged.

Actually, now that I think about it, wouldn't it be really lucrative to get promoted into and relegated from the Premiership every other season? TV revenue + parachute payment + playing the top four every other year in league games...

My main concern is whether this will be result too much games for the participating clubs. After waiting so long for the likes of Aston Villa and Man City to challenge for the top 4, the last thing I'd want to see is them do a "Rangers" and throw away decent efforts. I mean, both Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, etc could field two different teams every other game and still win but the "smaller" clubs are being stretched already as it is. Looking at it from that perspective, this could just end up widening the gap between the top and "smaller" clubs instead of closing it.

Ah... are you a Reading supporter, per chance?

My uncle and I are proud season ticket holders, though i will admit that these days that may not account to much given our current form.

And thanks for the heads up on multiple posts - they'll be no stopping me now.

Season ticket holders are ace. :p

Anyway, it's a trip to the Emirates for Jaffa today. Now, some have written off our chances of getting anything out of today's game, but I'm not so sure about that. A brief look in the record books shows that the last time Arsenal and City played one another in the league it was actually us who emerged 1-0 winners – so previous form would seem to suggest we'll do okay today.

Mind, that match did take place in the 1914-15 season, so it might not be the best indicator of current form. :D

I think that what's important is the players go in with the belief that they can come away with something. The emirates is a difficult stadium but the least scary of the big four away games IMHO. Obviously the bookies have Hull down for a loss today but, if they can keep the goal margin low i would see that as an accomplishment. I mean, imagine only losing to Arsenal, away, with their current form by one goal - that would be impressive and give the defence a great moral boost.

A point would be a fantastic result for us today, so fingers crossed. Unfortunately, I think it's unlikely that Wenger - noted of course for his thorough preperations - will underestimate us.

Still, the fact that it's a 5.30 kick off should work to our advantage. After all, Arsenal's young stars will be looking ahead to their paper rounds tomorrow morning, and will be wanting to save their energy for those really heavy Sunday broadsheets. :D

no thanks.

It's all going well!

Well, they do say that that form is temporary; class is permanent!

Funny that is exactly what Andy Gray said about Torres today.

In regards to the Cahill sending off it wasn't a straight red. However he should have already had a yellow card from earlier in the game and so he would've been sent off then anyway. Moyes didn't seem annoyed about it though. I guess Everton might appeal however I don't think they will get it but then again look at Terry :)rolleyes:).

It was the right result as Reina didn't have to make a single save.

The Liverpool game wasn't on TV, so I "watched" the live text update.

For the second week in a row, Liverpool had a goal unfairly disallowed...though this time it didn't affect the result.

Torres is still his productive self, denied a hat trick by an unfairly disallowed goal (saw the highlight on that). Keane assisted on one goal, but the strike partnership still sounds like it needs work.

My first impulse on the Cahill tackle was "straight red"...but on seeing the replay I'm not so sure. Definitely a yellow for sure though, maybe a red.

Indeed, I think it was slighlty more than a yellow but add to that Cahill walking away and not going back to the ref and the earlier hand in face incident it does mount up. However I feel the ref should've given him 2 yellows for that incident rather than a straight red.

In regards to referees everyone's favourite Rob "I'm only slighly better than Uriah" Styles

1631: "Worst ref decision I think I've ever seen. But Vaz Te's haircut is making everything better. Shocking."

1624: Let's clear something up right now - I'm not blaming Ronaldo for that penalty. He's gone over, but he didn't even appeal for the penalty. No United players did, yet for some reason Rob Styles chose to give a penalty. I just despair.

1623: "That was never a penalty, I actually laughed out loud, and I'm a Man Utd fan."
Colin T, via text

1619: GOAL Man Utd 1-0 Bolton
Cristiano Ronaldo should have put that wide on purpose in embarrassment. He slots the penalty down the middle, given for a perfectly-judged tackle from J'Lloyd Samuel on Ronaldo. Shameful refereeing.

1618: Rob Styles, you should be embarrassed. That is the worst penalty decision I have ever seen in my life.

Now I will reserve judgement until I have seen it on the telly but I think it is quite clear he has cocked up yet again.
