Out of interest, if you were Benitez how would you handle the misfiring Irishman? Give him another chance to prove himself perhaps? Keep him on the bench until Torres is fit to partner him, or until next month when you can bring in another striker for him to play alongside?

Or do you cut your losses, get rid in January and try to recoup as much of the £20 million he cost as possible?

IF I was Rafa I wouldn't have bought him. However, what I'd do now is try to get him firing again and then offload him at the end of the season. With the money I get from him I'd buy Diego Ribas Da Cunha.

When Torres is back I'd play the same 4-2-3-1 that we played last season and scored more goals than any other team in England (all comps) and more than any other team in Europe. That would give us back the Gerrard/Torres partnership that scored 54 goals. Then we'd win the league and these silly draws can stop.

Anybody using Football Manager 2009 on an early MacBook (GMA950 graphics)?

Is it possible?

As far as I know it works fine. My brother is running the demo on it (download and give it a try). The 3D graphics may not work but you can view it in 2D mode like FM2008.

Ok thanks. I'll give it a go.

On a side note Paul Ince has been sacked!

I feel you're ultimately right, though there is absolutely no chance (in this economic climate) that Liverpool will get anything close to what they paid for him.

In the meantime, we should be giving him playing time so he can get back to scoring.

You know what really scares me? Not the Keane problem, but Torres himself. What if he has a soft hamstring like Michael Owen? This could become a nagging injury that could threaten the career of the best striker in the world currently.

The return of Eduardo tonight....oh yeahhhh :D

I am so pleased. He was looking so so good last season. He made me want to watch Arsenal play.

It is a worrying thought. I hope there is some underlying problem that they have found to cause these issues rather than something that will be a persistent threat.

Liverpool best supported team in Premier League

Liverpool are the best supported football team in the Premier League, as more than a third of football fans claim to support their team based on "past successes".

I've watched Spanish Football for 12 years. I remember when Torres first burst onto the scene. He hasn't had a recurring hamstring problem in the past, obviously that can change, but I wouldn't worry too much. He's just going through a bad spell as they rushed him back.

Messi had a similar problem and they rushed him back and it went again. Now look at him.

Hmm. It's a shame that apparently so few people are prepared to support their local team, and that silverware rather than geography is the major influence. I wonder how many of the far away supporters of Liverpool, Manchester United et al have clubs right on their doorsteps further down the league system, who they've never actually been to see...

On that note, here's another recent survey showing who's best when it come to local support.

I know what you mean. I also wonder how many of these fans have been to a game at their teams home stadium (let alone away).

In terms of my local teams I have Watford (who despite trouble times are steering themselves away from danger, even if it means terrible games to watch). And I sometimes go to see the mighty Northwood F.C proper non league action. I have not yet been to a West Ham game but when I can I follow matches on the radio/telly. Hoping to go sometime in the new year.

There are plenty of teams I like and support but my blood is definitely red.

Apart from the obvious what other teams does everyone else actively watch or support.

Are having a dig at me, Jaffa? :p

If you are I would like to clarify. I was never really into football until I saw Ronaldo tear Compestela apart with this goal. After that I watched Barça more and more and recently became a club member i.e. effectively owning part of the club.
:)

As for local teams my brother plays semi pro and I am often found freezing my ass off at grounds around the country.

Heh, no – I'm not having a dig at anyone here, more just a comment on football fans in person.

From a personal point of view, growing up in the East Riding at a time when the Mighty Tigers weren't quite as mighty as they now are, it seemed that all the kids supported Manchester United, Liverpool or – if they wanted to support a 'local' team – they'd stoop to the depravity of supporting dirty, dirty Leeds United. After all, these were all top division clubs who were busy off winning stuff while we languished around in the basement divisions, battling financial meltdown and relegation from the League in equal measure.

Now we're doing well it's a different story of course – in fact, I've now got people I know who have never previously shown a shred of interest in our fortunes literally begging for tickets for 'our' next big match.

Yeah, it's funny because I just assumed that liking Man U when you are clearly born and raised near White Hart Lane would be blasphemy. And liking Everton when you are from Liverpool would be the same. And I know it gets really jumbled because the bigger the city the greater number of clubs you might have. And the level of any one of these clubs at any given time could vary.

Now I've no real sense of the geographic lay out of any part of England but I know that literally you can have, in some instances, teams that have home parks within a few blocks of each other. And rooting for on or the other can come down to a matter of what side of the street you were raised on.
I've always sensed a strong feeling of community when it came to the Prem.

We have what I've come to call "homers" here that root for any team that wins in any given sport. My kids are "homers". My 15 yr old likes Man U., Real Madrid, A.C. Milan.... ugh.

I have mates that I play with here that are English and they wouldn't dream of rooting for anyone other than their home 11*.

*Huddersfield, Man City

I know a lot of people here find internationals boring (at least outside the Word Cup or Euros), but for me my first loyalty is to the US national team. Second behind that is the Columbus Crew, my "local" team (and current MLS champions!). Liverpool falls third.

But I also have the advantage that I don't really have to choose between the successful club versus the local club, since the MLS barely registers on the radar of world football. I live in two different football worlds. Liverpool competes on the world stage, but the Crew are a team I can actually go see.

And liking Everton when you are from Liverpool would be the same.

Umm, Everton is in Liverpool, so it would be perfectly acceptable to be born in Liverpool and be an Everton fan.

I grew up just outside of Wigan. At the time Wigan were in Division 3, so my classmates were generally split between Liverpool, Everton, and Man U fans. All 3 teams are kind of 'local', probably only 15-20 miles from Wigan. Strangely, don't remember any Man City fans.

i bet you thought I was kidding when i said I had no real geographic sense of England... lol. ;) That does explain why Paul McCartney is an Everton fan and not a 'pool fan... ;) but it does prove my point

Just out of interest, how far away do you all live from your nominated teams? I get quick a bit of stick for not supporting my local Renfrewshire team, St Mirren, but as the Google Maps crow flies, I'm 4.0 miles from Ibrox and 4.1 miles from Love Street so I do support my local team!

I'm originally from Rutherglen so should really support Clyde but they moved to Cumbernauld.

Just as an FYI here is an aerial shot of the area. Straight line distance between the two stadia is .5 miles. Stanley is where Liverpools new stadium will be built (if it goes ahead).

There are families which are split and often on derby days the tv crews like to film friends / brothers etc sitting next to each other but with different kits on.

Despite the horrible background this is quite a good map showing the location of the Premiership teams, full interactive map here

edit:

Just out of interest, how far away do you all live from your nominated teams?

Liverpool
By road 196 miles, straight line 162 miles

Watford
By road 2.2 miles, straight line 1.6 miles.

155.33 miles from me to EP as the crow flies, or 196 miles by road.

Closest club is Arsenal at a little under 3 miles away, followed by Chelsea at about 3.5 miles.

I don't see how two teams in the one city can't agree to build a common stadia. Milan and Inter managed it.

This is coming from me with three 50,000+ stadia in the one city - it's ridiculous.
