Well, in Tomlin's defense, the Steelers played like **** last week and definitely needed a tune up before the playoffs. Injuries are just part of the game. Sometimes you get unlucky.
At least they have a decent backup in Byron Leftwich.
The Steelers got where they did on a great defense building what may be another Steel Curtain. Whether they use Ben or Byron, the Steelers are still a good team that can still pose a threat either way. If Ben's injury was really a concussion, then they should rest him for the remainder and try and save his career. A mostly defensive team can win a ring and the Ravens and Bucs have shown us that.
Both Steve Young and Troy Aikman had concussions that lay them flat like that and were rested/rehabilitated and both picked up ring(s) post-concussion in later seasons and were prudently allowed to heal and play for glory while healthy. If Young had played on in the early 90s and got hit with another concussion that same season, his agent (same as Aikman's) pretty much said it would be over for his football playing days, and the same with Aikman actually. A concussion is a very serious injury and should be treated as such.
Even if the Steelers didn't have a strong backup, Byron has a higher passer rating than Ben anyway, they could still be a threat through the AFC playoffs.
Let's hope Ben still has a career in the future. That was a wicked hit and a part of football and I don't think it was intentional to cause such an injury. At the end of the day, it's still a game, and defenders have to realize that sometimes they take away a player's livelihood, and sometimes their health. I had a car accident and a medium concussion and much of my memory of the previous 29 years or so was wiped out and fifteen years later, only some of it is coming back but it will never be the same.
When Jerry Rice took a wicked hit with the Raiders, I know it was all over for him, and his brave attempt to come back with the Seahawks and Broncos did not work as many of us Rice fans had hoped. He was not the same anymore and that was sad to see.
