Penn State over USC in your little mock poll? Laughable.

Our two conferences may be **** this year, but your conference, even on good years, doesn't compare to us.

okay USC and PSU have shared 2 common teams, Ohio St and Oregon State.

PSU vs Oregon st - 45-14
USC vs Oregon st - 27-21 (score may be close but the game wasn't)
There was 2weeks between playing, meaning oregon st had no real time for improvement.

PSU vs OSU - 13-6
USC vs OSU - 35-3
There was 6weeks between usc/osu and psu/osu. When ohio state played USC they were missing wells and no pryor. When psu played OSU, osu had wells back full strength, and period of 6weeks for pryor to learn the system.

PSU gave up a total of 61 rushing yards between wells and pryor
USC gave up a total of 71 rushing yards to a bunch of back ups.

PSU gave up 226 passing yards and no td's
USC gave up 136 passing yards and no td's

Here is the sad thing. USC say their game against OSU was the best of their season and they played awesome. While PSU had one of their worst secondary and offensive games of the season, had our starting qb knocked out mid way through the 2nd quarter, lost 7 minutes of memory, and continued to play till the 4th.

The stats are very close, yet psu had a terrible game and usc had their best game. hmmmmm

The game would ultimately be a defensive struggle

obey908, your logic is terrible. Have you even watched Utah play this year? I've watched Penn State quite a bit (mostly because of how much I love your coach), and Utah looks like the better team this year.

Ah the arguments. Fully 50% of what makes college football so fun.

Looks like it ought to be fun. Ought be either Florida or Alabama vs Texas, Texas Tech, or Oklahoma for the NC. Should be a great game! ( Plus Florida vs Alabama in the SEC Championship ought to be good!)

This is why I just can't get excited about the NFL.

All these arguments is all the more reason President-elect Obama is right: we DO need a playoff. My suggestion of using BCS #1 to #4 and assigning three BCS bowl games for this mini-playoff makes the most sense. :)

That's just it though, isn't it?

Everyone says a playoff in College Football is needed, and everyone has their suggestions as to which teams get in to the playoff. The most common of which is an eight team playoff taking the top eight teams at the end of the year.

This sounds all good and great, but isn't the whole issue with the BCS the polls?

If we take the top eight teams then who decides those teams? Do we keep the polling system in place? If we do then everyone is still going to wish for greener grass.

I agree. The problem I have with the BCS system is that it is made to keep certain schools and conferences 'elite' year after year. Underdog schools have a near impossible time getting a bid and therefore never get the money other schools and conferences do. If the top four were taken and had a playoff we would have the same problem: the same four teams would be in the finals year after year and the best players would always go to those schools because that is where the money and prestige is. It's a vicious cycle that locks out the little guy.

You could make the argument that that's just how it's going to be in college sports, but that isn't really true. At least in college basketball they start with enough teams in the bracket that gives a school the chance to start gaining a reputation. Under the BCS system you have people that claim schools are crap because they are in crap conferences. There's almost no way to get out.

My 4 team playoff... as of right now...

1. Florida
2. Oklahoma
3. USC
4. Texas

Florida plays Texas
Oklahoma plays USC
Winners play each other for the NC

Unfortunately, I think the Gators win
I hate the Gators :(

Sorry 'Bama... don't think you can hang with Florida
Sorry Penn State... only 4 teams and I think Texas is better
Sorry Texas Tech... you are a good team, but you were embarrassed when it counted most

Sorry Utah... don't think you are as good as any of those 7 teams
Sorry Boise... don't think you are as good as any of those 7 teams either

Sorry Ohio State and UGA... even though your 2 loses came to Top 10 and Top 5 schools respectively... you effectively lost your playoff

Hurts to admit that, doesn't it? :) (Florida Alumni, 1999)

I agree with your sentiment regarding Texas Tech. What will get interesting, with our current system, is if Oklahoma drops to rival Oklahoma State this weekend. That'll break the three way tie in the Big 12 South into a two way tie, which Texas Tech would win by virtue of beating Texas. So, that puts 'Horns fans in the position of rooting for Oklahoma, but hoping they score a narrow win.

Even so, I expect to see Florida face Oklahoma in Miami. Stoops facing his former team will make for an interesting story, and this'll be much greater contest than Ohio State provided for the Gators.

First, of course, they've got to get past the Seminoles and Alabama, neither of which are a given. Go SEC, go Gators!

Oklahoma has been known to stumble against Oklahoma State in the past... with lesser teams than State has now. This is where teams have to step up and finish business... if they don't... they fall by the wayside (USC v. UCLA, West Virginia v. Pitt).

I would expect a Gator/Sooner matchup as well...
I think the Gators have too much for the 'Noles and the Tide :(

Even though the Sooners looked unstoppable against Texas Tech last week, I still think it should be Florida and Texas in the National Championship.

I don't think it's right for Oklahoma to be ahead of Texas. It just doesn't make sense.

I also think Oregon is going to win in Corvalis this weekend, so here are my Bowl projections:

NC Game: Florida vs. Texas
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Alabama
Sugar: Ohio State vs. Utah
Orange: Florida State vs. Cincinnati
Rose: Penn State vs. USC

It would be hilarious (and a ratings blunder) if we saw Boise State vs. Utah in the Sugar Bowl. No way that will happen though.

So if Oregon State loses, who do you think replaces them? I pick Ohio State even though I don't think they deserve it, but the SEC and Big 12 will already have their two teams...

N.C.: Florida v Oklahoma
Fiesta: Utah v Texas
Sugar: Alabama v Texas Tech
Orange: Cincinatti v Florida State
Rose: Oregon State v Penn State

After the game against BYU saturday, the Fiesta Bowl representative said to the local media that the Fiesta Bowl is still very interested in Utah. He said that essentially it's a matter of deciding which they want more, a stadium full of Ute fans or a little bit more national interest.

Texas or Oklahoma will be playing in the Fiesta Bowl this year so there will already be a lot of T.V. viewers, and Utah showed extremely well at the Fiesta Bowl in 2004, so he essentially said that it's up in the air right now and that a decision won't likely be made until December 7th.

Either way, we'll finally get a shot at showing the nation what our team can do. We were totally shafted last time, the time when we were legitimate national championship material. If we can win this time, then do it all again next year, we should be allowed into the National title game.

And my playoff scenario would be to keep the current BCS bowls and add a few more, and make it an 16 team playoff. The top 16 at the end of the season go, with the #1 team starting with the #16 etc. This would add 3 exciting extra games to the season, and a legitimate national champ could then be crowned, rather than a subjectively chosen pair who are the only two who will have a shot each year.

You're right, but I would see Fiesta taking Utah before Ohio State

So maybe my predictions would be:

NC Game: Florida vs. Texas
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Utah
Sugar: Alabama vs. Ohio State
Orange: Florida State vs. Cincinnati
Rose: Penn State vs. USC

N.C.: Florida v Oklahoma
Fiesta: Utah v Texas
Sugar: Alabama v Texas Tech
Orange: Cincinatti v Florida State
Rose: Oregon State v Penn State

Only two teams can come from any one conference, so Texas Tech would likely be out of your predictions.

If Oregon State goes to the Rose then I don't think they'll pick Utah over USC. But being as I don't think Oregon State will win this weekend I can totally see Utah going to the Fiesta. If nothing else it would make sense geographically. But if this happens and Utah is up against the Big 12 South #2 team then I just don't see a Utah victory.

Regardless if it's Texas or Oklahoma, both teams are leaps and bounds stronger than any team Utah has faced this year. I certainly wouldn't want Boise to have a rematch with the Sooners this year because we would lose that one. I don't think it would be as bad as Hawaii lost last year, but we would still lose I'm sure.

I don't share the same confidence that SLC Flyfishing has, but there are a few teams I think Utah could beat. In order of who I think Utah could beat from easiest to hardest would be Penn State, USC, and Alabama. I think Oklahoma would be harder to beat than Alabama this year although the polls don't show it.

Of course they would say that... what do you expect them to say?
But given a chance for a Texas/USC "rematch" of college's 'greatest game'
... or a Texas/Utah game... it wouldn't be a hard choice

Why am I dreaming? This team has done some incredible things over the years. And our strongest assets (Coaching Staff and Defensive players) will remain largely unchanged for next year. Our best defensive player is only a sophomore! I think we're just seeing the beginning of the Utes on the national scene.

I agree Utah has had some great years, but the fact remains that us non-BCSers have to excel EVERY single year to be taken seriously on a permanent basis.

Considering Utah has another top-10 year next year they still wouldn't make it in to the National Championship Game. After three or four years of doing that then I could maybe see it happening, but then only if the stars aligned perfectly on a Full Moon in January. ;)

The same is said for my Boise State Broncos too. It sucks, but that's how it is.

On a related note, I've heard some other Ute fans over on ESPN.com saying that the Utah offense is going to take a big hit to graduation. Nothing's been said about the defense, so that's great that you will retain the majority of your players, but who will replace BJ? What does your offense look like for next year?

Corbin Louks is going to be our QB next year. He's as tough as nails and he's a big guy, he's not afraid to take some contact so he likes to run the ball a lot. He's a fair bit more mobile and quicker than Johnson and most people here (myself included) seem to feel that he's got a lot more to offer than Bryan Johnson did. He saw some time behind the snap during a few games this season and he looked great! I'm not too worried about the QB slot. I don't know who our receivers are going to be, and I'm pretty sure we've lost Asiata and Mack both, but we've won some crucial recruiting battles the past few years against other regional teams. Time will tell I suppose, but I haven't heard anything much about the new offense, apart from the QB position of course. It's our defense that has really been dominant this year though, and it will remain largely intact for the upcoming season.

Boy no love for my mighty tide...... I hope to god we don't loose and freaking kill Florida so I can stop hearing about the number 4 team so damn much. Good lord I am hardly hearing about my un-beaten tide... all this talk of Florida is making me hate them even more. I really didn't that was possible but it is happening. :D

It is true... you are sitting at #1 and undefeated but all of the talk is how mighty the Gators are and it is a foregone conclusion they will win the SEC. The only thing in questions seems to be who the Gators will play for the NC. I would LOVE to see you stick it to Urban Slimer and the Gators! Right now the Tide is invisible and nobody is showing you any respect. (note: that includes me  cause I have picked the Gators to beat you :()
