Duke's Cutcliffe to be the new Tennessee coach

I see him as more of a caretaker of the program
They had to do something

No shock there. After everything that's happened, after all the people that turned them down, this was a safe hire for them. And who knows, it could work out well...

Tennessee was at its best when Cutcliffe was with Fulmer (and with Peyton Manning)
He did a good job at Ole Miss with Eli Manning and his firing was crazy there
And now he has done a credible job at Duke

Ole Miss and Duke are not the easiest programs to win at

But having said that... I don't see him as their long term solution
He was, as you said, a safe hire
They had to do something... they were tanking fast and the rejections were mounting
He will be the caretaker of the program, trying to repair it and pass it on

I'd like to point out that UT = The University of Texas.

Thank you for your time. :p

Not exactly. Tennessee is Rocky Top. They have to be, since they play that @@#$@$!!! song about every 2 minutes during football games. First down? Play Rocky Top! 3 yard run? Play Rocky Top!

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate that song? (I'm sure MacDawg would agree) :)

Go to an OU game. They do the same crap with "Boomer Sooner."

I am not sure anywhere can rival "Rocky Top" for ad nauseam

From Wikipedia

Ad nauseam is a Latin term used to describe an argument which has been continuing "to [the point of] nausea". For example, the sentence "Rocky Top has been played ad nauseam" signifies that the song in question has been played extensively and everyone involved in the game is sick and tired of it.

OK, so I changed a few words in bold. Put me on NCAA probation ;)

If you've never been to an OU game, you can't say that. I've been to both and can safely say it's neck and neck.

I have not been to an OU game, so I will defer to "neck and neck"
Ugh, now I can't get the damn song out of my head now

Oh my... if Cutcliffe says "no" now... Tennessee is screwed big time
He was their safety valve

Seems like they play that damn song to celebrate even the smallest victories. When they stop a team from getting a first down, on first down, when their receiver makes bail, when the quarterback runs onto the field without tripping over the sideline.....

I have had OU season tickets for 8 years now and you are 100% right. The play it WAY too often.

BTW, does that song have any lyrics besides "Boomer Sooner"? :)

For some entertainment, check out this song from the Chris Vernon show. He hosts a sports talk show in Memphis. They are the same people who did the Col. Reb is Cryin' song. It's called Runaway Lane.

Yes, but not many:

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, O-K-U!

Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, O-K-U!

I'm a Sooner born
And a Sooner bred,
And when I die
I'll be Sooner dead.

Rah, Oklahoma! Rah, Oklahoma!
Rah, Oklahoma! O-K-U!

Original it ain't - I must confess that. Still, I love giving my wife a hard time about her school's fight song: "I've Been Workin' on the Railroad." :p

Wow, that's better than I thought. I always thought it only had two words. BTW, which school has that fight song? I know I've heard it on the NCAA Football video game, but I can't remember which school plays it. I remember laughing at it the first time I heard it. UTEP, maybe?

At least her school's fight song isn't "Auld Lang Syne" like Virginia. It may not be their official fight song, but they play it at football games. Talk about depressing.

It's Texas, although with completely different lyrics. My wife insists they're separate songs ("The Eyes of Texas"), but it's kind of like the Alphabet Song/Twinkle Twinkle Little Star/Baa Baa Black Sheep.

Guess they weren't creative to come up with new music for the song. :) I have to admit, though, that fight songs are one of the things I love about college football. One thing I most people don't know is that Rocky Top isn't Tennessee's official fight song. They have some other song that is the official song that they play briefly after a touchdown or something like that, then lead directly into Rocky Top.

I think ALL the Pac-10 schools (and coaches... Neuheisel/Chow, Harbaugh, et. al.) will smell blood in the water this year and see it as an opportunity to take out a decade of frustration

here's to UCLA taking the Pac-10 next year!
