Also this, which is the first time I've seen it in print (other than MacDawg's above post):

That's likely to scare off anyone of caliber (as if it hasn't already), so I would dismiss the Lovie Smith rumors as just that, but who knows? This thing has been pretty crazy already, so I wouldn't completely dismiss any credible rumor.

I've read that's why Cutcliffe didn't take the job. He wanted to keep his staff from Duke. Also, what's with Tennessee hiring coaches with famous dads? :)

Even though there are reports that Dooley is taking the job, I'll believe it when I see him in an ugly orange blazer.

I hate to see Vince's son stoop to this level ;)
But I will still enjoy kicking the Vol's behinds

Edit: Now there are reports that Dooley is NOT a done deal
Kippy Brown is still interviewing
And others still in the mix including Houston's Kevin Sumlin

Edit2: Looks like Sumlin signed a contract extension :)

WTF??

BTW, Dooley is 17-21 at La. Tech
What's up with hiring coaches with losing records at Tennessee? :)
Sounds like they are hiring Kiffin Lite™
Famous dad, underachieving son, losing record

That's been in the works for a while and has little/nothing to do with the Tennessee job. I imagine if he wants that job and it's offered to him, he'll find a way out of Houston.

Big difference between losing at Louisiana Tech and losing in the NFL (even if it is the Raiders).

Can't argue with the record, but at least Dooley isn't a complete douche.

I'm not terribly surprised at the hire though, they were getting desperate.

Ignatius, I breathed a VERY heavy sigh of relief when I read Wilcox was staying in Boise. I also heard that "sources close to the situation" said Wilcox was never serious about taking the job and was just testing the waters. I don't necessarily believe that, but I'm definitely happy he stayed.

So did anyone happen to catch who won the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award? ...It's some guy that has now won it twice in four years, actually the ONLY one to win it twice... Hmmm.... who was it?.......... I'm sure it was some guy at one of these "Big" schools... one of these "Real" college football programs....... I'm sure that's who it was.......

Yeah I've heard two different versions of the story. One is that Wilcox wanted the job and made first contact with A&M, but was Sherman's #2 choice. The other is that Wilcox was contacted, came to Houston with Peterson and went up to College Station for a look around and an interview, came away impressed but wasn't ready to leave Boise.

Either way, Sherman has been talking about running a 3-4 defense ever since he got here (that was what A&M ran in its heyday in the 80s-90s), and Tim DeRuyter (who just about everyone agrees will be announced very soon) is a 3-4 guy, so it's probably for the best.

I was on the Wilcox bandwagon through this whole process, but I watched the Armed Forces Bowl and was very impressed by the way Air Force's defense dominated UH's offense, so I'm very okay with DeRuyter coming to A&M. With the way their offense has progressed, the Aggies look like they are a decent defense (top 50 or so) away from 10 wins.

Congrats to Peterson and Boise State on winning the Bryant Award.

Wait... A&M had a heyday??

:D

Believe it or not, the they did. Jackie Sherrill won the SWC championship three times while he was there. R.C. Slocum won the SWC three years in a row in the early 90s, and the Big 12 in the 1998 shocker over Kansas State.

I've always kind of liked Texas A&M. We're very similar to them in many ways: Same colors, both are ag & engineering schools, and a shared history of football coaches. Mississippi State was known as Mississippi A&M for a long time. Emory Bellard and Jackie Sherrill both coached at Texas A&M before heading to MSU.

I lost a lot of respect for A&M, though, when they fired R.C. Slocum. I got curious and looked up his record. He was 123-47-2, and only lost 12 home games in 14 years. He never had a losing season, and yet A&M fired him. I don't get it.

Jackie Sherrill = one of the game's great cheaters
He elevated it to an art form ;)

Ya know what? I don't really care. He won here, and for that I like him. Had Sherrill retired after the 2000 season, we probably would have renamed the stadium after him. Heck, everybody cheats. He just got caught 1 too many times. He also learned from the best: Bear Bryant. You know, the same guy who said something to the effect of "If you aint cheatin', you aint tryin'".

The sad part is that because of his rep, the NCAA had a witch hunt after him (and us, by default). We were subject to the longest investigation in NCAA history, and in the end, only minor charges could be found. Yet, for three years, other schools were able to use the "they are about to be put on serious probation" line as a recruiting tool. Sherrill rightfully has a civil lawsuit filed against them, and I hope he wins a big, fat, settlement.

Don't tell anyone, but I don't have any problem with A&M. ;)

Part of it is that I was born and raised in Socal, so the rivalry didn't have any significance to me until I arrived at UT. It was also pretty hard to harbor any resentment after the bonfire collapse. I have a healthy respect for the school, the campus is nice, and the women are cute as hell. I also used to fly to College Station just about every week to get a Freebirds burrito (this was before one was built in Austin).

Those goose stepping skinheads in their band kind of weird me out, though. :p

Yeah, it's hard to say what really happened. I can definitely see it both ways. I'm just glad he's staying. He's a brilliant defensive mind, and he has a pretty good thing going for him at Boise State. He has complete control over his defense.

No kidding. That was quite the showing. I think your defense is definitely in good hands. :)

Nice! A very deserving honor for Mr. Kiffin. If he has any balls al all (and any sort of a sense of humor), if this comes to pass he'll show up at the renaming ceremony.

In other news, Skip Holtz took the vacated Louisiana Tech job and Ruffin McNeill got the head job at his alma mater, ECU, after Skip Holtz left for South Florida. As good a coach as Tommy Tuberville is, I wonder if Tech will regret letting McNeill go; he's a class act and a fine coach.

Also, A&M's hire of Air Force DC Tim DeRuyter was finally made official yesterday. This gives me hope that Mike Sherman might actually be on the right track.

I don't ever remember an "off season" getting off to a busier start

There has been so much turmoil with:

Coaches behaving badly - Leach, Mangino, Leavitt
High profile coaching shakeups - Carroll, Meyer, Notre Dame
Coaching round-robins as coaches go other places and leave vacancies
Coordinator openings
Record underclassmen heading to the NFL - Gator's losing a ton and others

And of course the Lane Train leaving Tennessee

It has been a wild ride already
Can't wait to see how the new season shakes out
Winds of change blowing in the Pac 10
What will Kelly do at Notre Dame
What about the Gators and Urban Meyer without Tebow
Who will be on the hot seat in 2010
Some say Les Miles better win big or LSU will start courting Bo Pellini
How long will Spurrier stay at S.Carolina and lose
What about Rich Rod and Michigan

Loads of fun ahead

Don't you mean without Tebow and Urban Meyer?

Some say Les Miles better win big or LSU will start courting Bo Pellini

I know it's not a popular position to take on the internet, but I think LSU would be nuts to run off Miles. He's not the greatest coach in the world, but he did win a national championship there, he has still been recruiting well and I honestly don't think they could get anyone better.

LSU fans have obviously forgotten about the 80's and 90's when they had five different coaches, none of whom were world-beaters.

I also don't think Pellini would leave Nebraska for LSU. NU is the job he wanted all along (he was the interim coach in the bowl game after Solich got canned and, from all accounts, was very upset when he didn't get the head job).

What about Rich Rod and Michigan

I think he gets fired in December 2010. Who knows, Michigan might go steal Miles away from LSU and leave Tiger fans wishing they had treated him better all along.
