The Villa - Wigan game is a cracker so far. No goals but chances galore at both ends.

Edit: Early contender for goal of the season, Rodallega with a cracking volley.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming season from a Leeds point of view, might I ask? Do you think this may be the year you start to climb back up the divisions?

We have to get promotion this season. If we don't, we'll have to replace Beckford and his 30+ goals a season. Which is nigh on impossible.
The 8 million from Delph was good from a cash point of view, but it's hardly a statement of intent from Bates. He's the best player our academy has produced for an age, better than Milner and Lennon definitely, yet we've sold him. We should have been building our team around him. However, he wants Premiership football and he's not gonna play for England if he plays in League One.

We've been promising in pre-season (beat Burnley, should have beaten Blackburn and Newcastle), good opening day win too. Pretty solid squad, need to bring in a left winger and another defender probably. When Naylor (captain, best centre half) returns from injury our defence will be much stronger.

I'm quietly optimistic. No doubt it will be another year of playoff disappointment.

Fabian Delph starts for Villa, interesting to see how he copes with life in the PL.

I'm a Leeds fan by the way.

Delph just taken off after 60 minutes. A booking for a bad challenge in the first half and not much else from the kid.

Edit:

Great win for Wigan. Now time for Everton - Arsenal.

Just noticed that Nicklas Bendtner has changed his shirt number to 52 - I'm wondering if that's the highest ever in the premier league.

Edit 2: According to Wikipedia:
To date, the highest number worn by a player in the Premier League is 51, by Chelsea's Sam Hutchinson in their match against Everton on 13 May 2007

Hmm... I wonder why the change, and to such a number? Perhaps one of our Gooners can enlighten us.

If he's doing it for luck, it seems to be doing the trick - his side are currently demolishing Everton 5-0. Moyes out, and all that. :p

Indeed, it was for luck. He even offered to pay to replace the fans shirts who'd already bought the 2009/10 kit with his name and 26 on it. Probably thought the same as me, that it wouldn't cost him anything, but apparently it was going to cost him about £10k

So about 2 days wages then?

Does anyone know the rules regarding the color of shorts? I thought teams had to play in different colored shorts, hence why you sometimes see teams wearing their away shirts with their home shorts or vice versa, but both Everton and Arsenal were wearing white shorts today.

Referees make a decision whether the kits are easily distinguishable before the match, it's down to them if same colour shorts are fine. They usually are.

Good win for Leeds, Arsenal on fire, loads of goals and away wins... Good day.

Just saw highlights of the Chelsea-Hull games. Hull needs to bring the stripes back, they look like Wolves.

Edit: Nice to see I'm off to a nice start in iknowthescore.

Throughout our history, we've had spells switching between striped and plain shirts. For example, we were plain from the late Forties straight through the Fifties, and again for much of the Sixties. In fact, the plain City shirt my Jaffatar™ usually wears is a design from the late 1950s.

The new shirt has been compared to Wolves and of course there are similarities, but it's actually based on an Admiral shirt worn in the early Eighties – albeit that version had red pinstripes rather than black.

Opinion is mixed, with most people preferring one over the other. I prefer stripes personally, and quite thick ones at that.

Indeed. Before the game the kit managers of the two clubs discuss the strips that are to be worn, and hey come to an agreement if there's a clash. Their preferences are then submitted to the League, who either approve the choices or ask for alterations to be made. As you say, on the match day the referee has the right to ask one or both of the teams to change socks, shorts or even shirts if he's having trouble distinguishing – this can happen before the game or even during it.

I've actually seen an away team have to change into a borrowed pair of shorts mid-match before. :p

Just got back from the pub after the Liverpool debacle.

I would say it was a very flat performance from the Reds overall; Reina made some excellent saves, and the one bright spot today for Reds fans (IMO) is that new signing Glen Johnson looked sharp. Other than that it's all bad news...too early to make any real statements of course but the whole squad looked rusty. Benayoun injected some life into the side when he subbed in, but Gerrard was quiet for long spells and Torres seemed muzzled. Not to mention that Skrtel and Carragher head-butted each other.

Based on what I saw we should have gotten another penalty when Voronin went down in the box, but I see that the pundits are disagreeing with me on that. We could have gotten a draw but didn't really deserve even that. Spurs were better today.

Still, there are thousands of examples of why making any predictions based on the first game of the season would be foolish (Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Man U last year for example?). I just hope this was a fluke.

what mls game are you going to?

I was in Columbus to see my boys sink FC Dallas 2-0. We had tons of chances to score, could have been 6-0. One flagrant penalty shout went unheeded by the ref. The best news is that Guillermo Barros-Schelotto, team talisman and leading scorer, made a short substitute appearance so he's fit again after a hamstring injury. We are now top of the table with a game in hand and a 10-3-9 record. I've got tickets for our CONCACAF Champions League group stage match against the Puerto Rico Islanders this week...interested to see what kind of side we put out for that match, since we currently in the running for all the silverware.

I just found out that ESPN2 is going to be showing some games along with FSC and Setanta.

I just discovered that as well - not sure how I missed the announcement. They broadcast the Chelsea-Hull City match yesterday.

I remember a few years ago (2004/5 maybe) when Hull Played Bradford at the KC Stadium both Bradford strips clashed with out home strip so we had to play in our away strip, at home. And it was on Sky, that look very professional!

I was there, I remember it well. Quite why they thought claret and amber stripes wouldn't clash with black and amber ones I'll never know. I think actually it was an honest mistake on the part of the Bradford kit manager, who brought the wrong hopper or something.

The buffoon. :p

But couldn't we have given Bradford our second strip or a training top, or maybe make them wear skins with jumpers for goal posts. Windass was playing for Bradford at the time and he provided a very novel way of telling the crowd they won 1 - 0....

The game yesterday was a nice little **** you to.. pretty much the entire press. We missed Toure and Adebayor.

Hotspurs 2 - 1 Liverpool :(

COYS! :D

I got to see it. Chelsea was pressing most of the match. How Hull got the lead for that little bit was beyond me. That they managed any runs at all once Chelskie tied it was truly amazing. Amber mids were stuck in the back for most of the 2nd half. :(
