haven't gotten to see video of jozy's goal today yet, although it sounds like it was a scorcher. his assist on the weekend, however awkward-looking, was a very nice, deft touch for someone who is usually described as a big, burly, pure #9. i can't wait to see how he develops with a team that relies on him for offensive production.

not to join the crazy english footballing media's tendency to talk as though the season is only 3 games long and every piece of action is an indication of how things will be all year, but i'm very encouraged by hull's new signings and their performance thus far--imagine if this year, the team flips the script and plays its best AFTER december!

A bit of positive news first – Jozy scored. :)

Always good news...hopefully the first of many.

Meanwhile, on a far less savoury note, there's been a lot of trouble at the League Cup tie between West Ham and Millwall. Fighting outside the ground – including a stabbing – with further violence in the stands during the game, and a couple of pitch invasions to cap the evening off. Bloody idiots, the lot of them.

I have to say this is the first serious brawl I've heard of in years in the UK. The last couple years its been Serie A that has grabbed the headlines with brawls and stabbings.

It was from a free kick. It was played into a quick one-two, and he drilled it into the bottom corner. Wasn't bad. ;)

The first was the pick of the night – a screamer by young Tom Cairney, on his senior debut in fact. He's only 18, rather like a lot of our side tonight in fact.

What is it with West Ham and stabbing at the moment? Even at its most horrific in Italy, it was always a beating to death, never any weapons involved, which makes it seem less intentional.

heh, i'd argue it sounds a lot harder to "accidentally" beat someone to death than to unintentionally stab someone.

but i see what you're saying--bringing the knife smells a bit of premeditation.

Really?

Last season look up what happened with an Arsenal fan when we played in Rome. Then look up what happens every time English teams played in Rome.

Stabbing.

But you're comparing two different aspects of football violence, I was referring to violence between Italian teams within Serie A as compared to West Ham vs Millwall ie teams in the same country.. Violence between italian and english fans has always and will always be bloodier.
Plus, Rome, Roma and its fans are an obvious exception, you can't mention them as if they're the norm.

Well, looks like Laws really wasn't happy with Franny Jeffers after being sent off last night, he's transfer listed him!
"We have therefore enforced the heaviest punishment available with immediate effect and transfer listed the player."

Champions League

So the final qualifying rounds of the champions league are tonight, and the draw for the group stages are tomorrow. I thought I would look at the seedings to see if there are any potential "groups of death" that could be formed:

Pot 1:
1. Barcelona (Spain)
2. Chelsea (England)
2. Liverpool (England)
4. Manchester United (England)
5. AC Milan (Italy)
6. Arsenal (England)**
7. Sevilla (Spain)
8. Bayern Munich (Germany)

Pot 2:
10. Lyon (France)
11. Inter Milan (Italy)
13. Real Madrid (Spain)
17. CSKA Moscow (Russia)
19. Porto (Portugal)
19. Sporting (Portugal)**
22. AZ (Holland)
24. Juventus (Italy)

Pot 3:
28. Rangers (Scotland)
34. Olympiacos (Greece)**
39. Marseille (France)
41. Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine)
43. Stuttgart (Germany)**
44. Fiorentina (Italy)**
45. Athletico Madrid (Spain)
48. Celtic (Scotland)**
49. Bordeaux (France)
64. Besiktas (Turkey)

Pot 4:
72. Copenhagen (Denmark)**
97. Wolfsburg (Germany)
98. Standard Liege (Belgium)
106. Maccabi Haifa (Israel)
116. Zurich (Switzerland)
116. Rubin Kazan (Russia)
157. Unirea Urziceni (Romania)
157. Timisoara (Romania)**
190. Apoel Nicosia (Cyprus)**
x. Debrecen (Hungary)
x. Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova)**

The numbers preceding each team is their UEFA Coefficient.
Teams marked with ** are playing a qualifying game tonight, so some will be eliminated.
If after teams have been eliminated a pot contains less than 8 teams then teams will move up to fill the spaces. For example, if Arsenal are eliminated tonight then Lyon will move into Pot 1.

The draw will generate 8 groups. Each group will contain one team from each pot. Note, teams from the same country cannot be placed in the same group.

This means that there is a good chance that Real Madrid will end up in a group with a English team, since Real is in Pot 2, and there are only 6 non-Spanish Pot 1 teams, 4 of which are English.

Of teams in the lower Pots, I don't imagine teams would relish a trip to Kiev in winter, nor to Israel.

Never a penalty - but quite a dive from Eduardo. Tsk Tsk.

Not that I ever thought Celtic had a snowball's chance in hell of winning this draw, but from a neutral's perspective a lame way to see the game decided.

Yeah, let's hope Arsenal score some more goals, because that was a cruel blow for Celtic

I really wish that FIFA/UEFA/the national leagues would come out and decide that all games will be reviewed on tape after the fact and anyone caught diving will be given a 5 game ban.

Celtic haven't played that badly either - Arsenal are the better side but Celtic have had some decent spells.

I really wish that FIFA/UEFA/the national leagues would come out and decide that all games will be reviewed on tape after the fact and anyone caught diving will be given a 5 game ban.

I don't see that happening until in-game video replay finally makes it onto the pitch. That's one aspect of gridiron football that I think FIFA should adopt. In the time it took Artur Boruc to scream at the ref after the call, the fourth official could have reviewed the play and seen the dive. Eduardo would seen yellow and the game would still be 0-0.

Or how about fined 2 weeks wages, hit them where it hurts.

It's not going to affect the richer clubs or richer players though. £100k might sound a lot, but when you earn that every week, it's peanuts

I'm interested to see if Wenger 'saw' the dive though ;)

My bet is no on Wenger's having seen it. To be fair, Boruc's body was between the people on the bench and Eduardo; the camera view we got was from the opposite side of the field, showing clearly that while Boruc failed to get the ball, he also failed to touch the flailing, diving Eduardo.
