Liverpool fall to the footballing juggernaut that is...Bobby Zamora?

I don't care if Torres went off after 62 minutes, we still should not be conceding three against Fulham. Everyone will be screaming crisis again...

Rotten, rotten luck for Hull. :(

Crazy Day. 8 red cards in the Premier League games so far today. Plus, how to Wigan lose 4-0 to bottom of the table Portsmouth.

Phil Brown probably sacked this week, and I would imagine many Liverpool fans want Rafa gone too.

Rafa out? No.
While I imagine there are some Liverpool supporters who want him out, I'm sure that the vast majority are directing their frustrations at the owners, not the manager.

Granted, as discussed Rafa's recruitment leaves a lot to be desired but from a neutral standpoint I think getting shut of him at this point isn't going to achieve a great deal.

There's a rumor that he'll be replaced by Paul Jewell. I think that would be a great choice.
Brown said after the match that he expects to be manager well into the New Year. He's meeting with owner Russell Bartlett tomorrow and new chairman Adam Pearson (you heard it here first, folks! ;)) on Monday, and – although sacking him off the back of today's result would be harsh – I think the damage has already been done and I won't be hugely surprised if we part company with him.

He may be given the opportunity to turn things around under Pearson but Sir Adam has shown little hesitation in dismissing under performing gaffers in the past. He backs his managers, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't suffer fools gladly either and if he thinks the club is suffering under Brown then he'll be looking to get a new manager in place. Certainly, if Brown does stay beyond Monday he'll find he has a otally different relationship with Pearson than he did with Duffen.

As to a successor, SkyBet is offering the following odds...

5/1 Gareth Southgate, Alan Curbishley
8/1 Paul Jewel, Slaven Bilic, Peter Taylor
12/1 Steve Coppell, Darren Ferguson
16/1 Gus Poyet, David O'Leary, Graeme Souness, Peter Reid

Curiously, Peter Taylor (a former and rather successful City manager in the past of course) was all set to join Roy Keane at Ipswich until a few days ago until he got cold feet – but if he were to come here I'd be surprised.

Of those names, I'm not particularly inspired by any but I'd go with either Curbishley, Jewel or Coppell, although I think we're probably a bit far north for the former. Might give him a nosebleed coming here.

Jewell does of course have links with Pearson, so it's no surprise he's considered one of the front runners...

Bad news for the Columbus Crew - we lost our 1st leg playoff match against Real Salt Lake, who scored in the 88th minute to end it 1-0. The Crew have now scored just one goal in the last four or five matches. We were red hot though most of the summer but we've played so many matches between the league, Champions league and international duties I think the squad is showing fatigue. Real Salt Lake has only had the league to worry about and it shows.

We host Real Salt lake on Nov 5th and, as it is a two legged tie with an aggregate score, we need to win 2-0 to go through. Bad times. :(

Bear in mind if this league was run as it is in Europe we'd have already won the title...I wonder how results would differ if the Premier League had two-legged playoffs?

Drat.

Hmm. It just keeps on getting worse...

It seems we're going to be the subject of a Premier League investigation over Michael Turner's transfer to Sunderland. The fee involved has always been 'undisclosed', but Charlton and Brentford (Turner's former clubs) received sell on payments suggesting the fee was in the region of £4million plus clauses. However, it appears the true figure may be substantially higher, and as a result the two London clubs are quite rightly looking to recover what they are owed.

Duffen out!

Oh...

New to this thread, but enjoyed reading it so far.

I was invited to (but turned down) the chance to do the 'Jeff Stelling Soccer Saturday drinking game' yesterday. All those red cards and goals must have made for a hell of a party:D Haven't heard from my pals yet today.....

As for Rafa's sacking, no chance. Didn't he just sign a new 5 year deal recently? You'd imagine he's on £3M a year, so the owners simply can't afford to get rid of him.

As for my team, Colchester United, gutted about conceding a last minute winner at Millwall yesterday ending our unbeaten run. Still all's well, top end of the table. At this rate, we might be meeting in the championship Jaffa :p

Welcome to the thread, capoeirista.

You know something, I'm in a defiant mood right now. I don't want us to be relegated by any means but if we do go down, we go down and there'll be no sobbing or feeling sorry about it – two fingers up to the Premier League and all the sneerers who didn't think we'd last a single season let alone two. I know some folk think football doesn't exist outside of the top flight, but on the contrary it's well ace.

So if the worst does happen, and a smirking pundit comments that rather than the Emirates and Old Trafford we'd better get used to Home Park and Bloomfield Road next season, bollocks to them. Because, Mr Pundit, while you're shivering in a soulless stadium I'll be at those two venues having a nice day out at the seaside, quaffing ale and scoffing the biggest ice cream you can imagine. Yeah, that's right – ice cream.

How'd you like that, Fergie? Want a flake with it, Wenger? :p

If we go down, we go down fighting and then we'll have a cornetto. Consider my tin hat donned, my flake on standby and my readiness for a dirty, torrid relegation scrap... er... readied.

At this rate, we might be meeting in the championship Jaffa :p
But do you have ice cream?

I know some folk think football doesn't exist outside of the top flight, but on the contrary it's well ace.

Well said.

I was skeptical of the MLS at first but there is some very good football in our league. I've since seen some Championship and even League One and USL football and the games can be entertaining. People who refuse to watch the "lesser" leagues are robbing themselves of a lot of good football.

Plus, a lot of the smaller stadiums are more intimate, closer to the pitch, cheaper and have great atmospheres.

I wish we had ice cream at Crew Stadium though. :)

Unsurprisingly, we've announced that Adam Pearson is taking over as Executive Chairman, with immediate effect.

He's said over the weekend that Brown will be in charge next Sunday when we play Stoke City, after that who knows? It should maybe be mentioned that the bookie's favourite Alan Curbishley is currently embroiled in getting his compensation sorted from West Ham – this is liable to take another couple of weeks to be resolved, so perhaps Brown is keeping his seat warm until Curbishley's distractions are out the way?

"The manager has the full backing of the board"
I'll give it a week!

Strange goings ons yesterday in Scotland with the Rangers game. It was abandoned at half time due to.... rain! Yes, rain in Scotland! Who would have believed it! We're just not prepared to deal with this freaky weather!

Craig Levein said:
"We're gutted, because it's the best we've played for so long."
Yeah, playing so well you were one goal down, I'll bet you are gutted that the whole game has to be replayed.:p

What do you think of Curbishley Jaffa? I only know him from his time at West Ham.

In case anyone cares, LA Galaxy drew 2-2 with local rivals Chivas USA in what has been billed as the playoff superclassico. The game was mostly characterized by horrific defending and Golden Balls spent most of the game arguing with the refs.

Oh, and Shrek is now a father. Is that good thing?

Go Revolution!

I saw on the news things have been a bit rainy north of the border. I hope the floods haven't made their way to Fuzzy Croft.

As for Curbishley... of the options we have I suppose he's one of the better ones. He has experience of working under a tight budget at a lower Premier League club, so that's one box ticked at least. There just seems to be a feeling here that he wouldn't want to move up to Hull. We'll see though, stranger things have happened.

Brown has the Chairman's backing for the moment, but he'll be left in no doubt he has to start delivering soon.

Also in MLS 2009 Playoff News: New England Revolution dumped all over Chicago Fire 2:1...

I was hoping Chicago would lose this game, although I didn't expect 2 goals from the Revs. The return fixture might be Blanco's last game in the MLS if you beat them. I still feel like the Revolution don't have enough going forward, but credit to them, they pushed the Fire the whole match and got the goals. The key is Joseph's ability to hold the ball and dictate the pace of the match a bit. Chicago still have quality players and the goal difference is only one, so this tie is far from decided. But well done to the Revs on going out there and getting the win.

I think people are starting to under-rate the Crew. We can easily win this whole show if we see just a little more form from a couple key players. I will be in Columbus on Thursday to watch the big match.

It's all so silly isn't it? The moment we have to talk about someone getting backing from the board, history tell us he's not long for the job. "Getting backing" means the exact opposite of what is seems to mean.

If they do sack Brown in the near future, it will be interesting to see what the new manager will do to try and improve results.

So apparently there's a rumor that Rafa is eyeing the Real Madrid job and talks between him and the Real board are underway. Supposedly, they want him to quit before they fire Pellegrini. All speculation, ofcourse but interesting none the less.

P.S. And way to go JC, to hell with the premiership, I got so hyped up after reading your post that I'm actually wanting Hull to go down now..

Indeed, although our situation is slightly different from the norm given recent events with the finances and the departure of Duffen, paired with Brown's apparent inability to get the team performing. There can't be very many Chairmen who find themselves giving the vote of confidence on the first day of the job.

Pearon said today that we'd been living on too much champagne and not enough ale. He's not wrong, by the sounds of it.

Oh, and I'll dig my Jaffatar's™ Crew kit out for Thursday. :)

Ace, you can have an ice cream too. Staying up is so last season. :p

Meanwhile, for our American friends – it seemed that we pulled the wool over Jozy's eyes when it came to East Yorkshire's transport network...

Unless Liverpool look set to finish out of the top four I'd be completely shocked to see Rafa go, and even then I'd be a bit surprised.

Excellent. :)

Love the sheep clip...now we know why Jozy was late! :D

If you're a Becks fan, note that AC Milan confirmed on Monday that England midfielder David Beckham would be returning to them on loan in January... Good riddance for LA to be sure; Beckham has been a disaster at LA... criticized by supporters and teammates... and though Galaxy is doing well in the MLS I attribute this to Donovan and the boys who are doing it despite this Beckham loser... You can have him AC Milan and good riddance...

...this Beckham loser... You can have him AC Milan and good riddance...
Seven national titles (six in England, one in Spain), two FA Cup winners medals and a Champions League winners medal – as well as being the most capped England outfield player of all time – suggest that 'loser' isn't exactly a word one generally associates with Beckham. ;)

Hang on, I've just remembered who he's married to. Point taken. :p

Beckham has been a mixed blessing for the MLS. He has not lived up to his original billing, but he has helped to grow the league. On the pitch his impact has been solid if unspectacular, although he has not played enough. He and Donovan have combined for some spectacular attacks at times, but the Galaxy are a slow team and Becks is not a pacy player. I would say that he's definitely played a significant role in LA's success this season. Their attack is good, midfield is good, but the defense is still shocking. And like his other club AC Milan, they are an old squad.

Still, I hope he continues to return to the US between stints for Milan and England. I want as many high-profile players in our league as we can get, and even if he is just here in a managerial/coaching/ambassadorial role it will be good for MLS. I'm still hoping the rumors about Thierry Henry considering an MLS move in a couple years are true...
