Nolberto Solano training with Colchester United. That's a surprise for me this evening...

Leivin signs up with Scotland for two years, Nasri avoids a ban for his stamp but Michael Turner gets four games for his elbow...

What is it with Arsenal players avoiding bans this year? Wenger must have naughty pictures of the whole FA or something as blackmail material (probably from all his voyeur activity :D), nobody ever sees them do anything wrong...

Speaking of Wenger, he seems irate at the possibility of Arsenal doing a pre-season tour of the US later this summer, saying that it will not give his team time to prepare for the season. Didn't seem to hurt Chelski at all....

Much like Wenger himself. "I didn't see it" should be on his tombstone:D

Well, both Arsenal and City have been charged with failing to control their players in the fracas that followed Nasri's stamp. We'll see whether the FA considers that both teams deserve equal punishment...

One question on that:

How, in this context, are a team expected to "control their players"? If the coaching staff runs out there to calm them down they will also get sent off...or is the fact that a fight broke out in the first place what constitutes a failure to control players?

Had coaching staff come onto the pitch then that would have breached the laws of the game, and would no doubt receive a hefty punishment. Anyone other than the players and officials aren't allowed to encroach without the referee's permission, for example a physio treating an injured player. The charge is more one of overall discipline, no one would expect Phil Brown to come onto the pitch and give his players a good talking to...

So, Arsenal against Hull City.

Overall I thought we performed okay. We got in Arsenal's faces but obviously we're taking on a team who are light years ahead of us in quality. 3-0 is the sort of result you expect in this game, so while naturally I don't like to see us lose I'm completely unconcerned about the scoreline.

I like to see what our opponent's support has to say before and after they play us, and looking at some of the comments from the Arsenal lot online they seemed to be under the impression that losing this game was going to ruin our Christmas, and quite possibly the next one as well. Er, no. Our biggest match over the Christmas/New Year period wasn't last night's, it certainly isn't Manchester United on the 27th, or Chelsea on the 9th - it's Bolton on the 29th, as this is the match we're most likley to pick points up from. And points make prizes, or something.

I think there's a section of the Arsenal support who seem to be developing a rather unhealthy obsession with seeing us fail, which is jolly nice for them I must say. Watch it - that's how Stoke City started out, and you don't want to end up all embittered like them.

Anyway, for me there were three key points. First there was the stamp by Nasri on Garcia, which the Frenchman should really have walked for. This resulted in a bit of fisticuffs which could really have resulted in cards being shown to several players from both sides, but in the end only Nasri and Hunt were booked. Having seen the incident replayed a couple of times, I'm a little unsure why Hunt was booked as there were players from both sides doing a lot worse than he did - I can only assume it was for his cowardly attempt to headbutt the swinging fist of an Arsenal player?

The penalty decision was a bit soft to say the least, but Geovanni's kick was poor - I think he was trying the trick of taking it slow and hoping the 'keeper dived before he kicked it. Of course, Almunia didn't move (save for a couple of yards forward off his line) and he was easily able to save the weak shot. Had it gone in and we'd got the scores level things may have ended up differently, but that's the way it goes.

The free kick that led to Denilson's goal was beautifully taken, but the decision to award it was as weak as the penalty decision. The player slipped, simple as that.

Comedy moment for me was the shot of the Arsenal subs bench - as you might expect, they were all hat and gloved up, and were wearing the biggest puffa jackets I've seen outside of the Bransholme-Hull city centre bus, but the poor little darlings were sat there with blankets over their knees so they could keep warm. Bloody massive blankets, emblazoned with the club crest.

The. Great. Bloody. Girls. :D

I have a suspiscion that Jack Wilshire's mum rolls up before matches in the manner of Mrs Pike on Dads Army, lambasting Wenger for sending her poor boy out in the cold and doling out blankets and scarves to him and his team mates.

Le garçon stupide...

I only saw the highlights of the game, not the whole thing. Nasri incident wasn't a stamp, he trod on his foot.. yes, it was cynical and naughty, and yes, he should have done it to Hunt, and he could well have gone for it - but saying he stamped isn't really true.. he trod, rather than stamp. As it turns out the referee had this view of the incident.

Penalty.. stupidly soft penalty, poorly taken and the rebound poorly missed. Suppose that is justice. Walcott missed a chance which really would have given him some confidence he is clearly lacking.

Big game against Villa now, 27th.

Obviously very pleased with the result against Villa today, and I think it shows how key Cesc is to our attack. It didn't sound like he reaggravated the hamstring too severely, hopefully they're just being cautious. It's great to only be 4 points behind Chelsea at this point considering where we were only a few weeks ago.

Thats good, should get more money for him when he leaves for Spain in the summer ;)

Not much in the way of thrillers...Fabregas looked pretty clinical though.

The Hull City - United match was actually a pretty good contest to watch, I thought Hull City did well and disrupted United's game quite successfully at times. United were sloppy.

From Hull City's perspective, I thought the most frustrating things were the number of wayward passes that led to turnovers and the missed chances. If the passing was a bit tighter and the finishing a touch more precise Hull could have scored a couple more goals. Not to mention the penalty...which was definitely a penalty. In the end, Man United's still-dangerous attack proved too much. And finally, the Altidore report: the commentators made much of him cramping up a bit in the 67th minute or so, questioning his fitness. It was funny watching him win a foul against the much smaller Raphael. He looked like he was definitely pushed for the penalty, but he did embellish a little. I would liked to have seen him involved more but he did alright, and had at least one solid shot on goal.

As far as the Liverpool match goes, the red card was a gift, though Gerrard's goal was well taken and would have worked against 11 men as well as it did against 12 I think. For most of the game Johnson provided a lot of the attacking impetus and yet the goal came from Insua's excellent cross from the left.

Torres looked threatening for the first 1/4 of the game then faded away. I was a little worried by his performance, he seemed petulant and uninterested for much of the game. Aquilani was...inoffensive. He showed deft touches and got himself involved but was not a game-changer. At this point I'm not worried about him living up to his transfer fee, I just want to see him contributing on the pitch. Perhaps the most important thing was we kept a clean sheet - though the red card helped out there.

Indeed, a lack of sharpness in front of goal has proved costly for us in recent times but that's not exactly a new problem. A bit more composure is needed at times.

In terms of our passing, overall we weren't actually that far behind them – percentage wise at least. In all, we had 260 passes, 192 of which were successful and 68 unsuccessful. Manchester United made 402 passes, 313 successful and 87 unsuccessful, plus two 'assists'. That gives us a 73% completion rate compared to Manchester United's 78%. Interestingly, we actually made slightly more interceptions – 24 to their 22.

In saying that, you have to consider 'pro-zone passes' – short little one-twos between players which bump up the pass completion percentages. Generally we did fine here and it was our longer range passing that let us down – our crossing wasn't exactly great for example, and when we tried to move the ball quickly over distance it was easily picked off. They fared better in this regard.

Furthermore, we had 61% possession to their 39% – when you consider the number of passes made respectively that indicates the speed with which Manchester United are able to move the ball around the pitch, they looked especially quick and dangerous on the counter.

Heh. Stats. :p

Some of the papers here have suggested that Torres may put a transfer request in should Liverpool fail to qualify for next season's Champions League...

Watched both games yesterday, I had hoped that Arsenal/Villa would have been a cracking game, but it wasn't. Great cameo from Fabregas though.

Hull/Man Utd... well if Garcia (ex CUFC) had been awarded a penalty it might have been a different game. I can't blame the ref for missing it, it took 3 super-slo-mo replays to figure out it was actually a pen. That said I thought this was the better game, certainly there were chances for both sides. I think Fagan (ex CUFC) was lucky he didn't get sent off. After his first booking he was tearing into the opposition!

Southend 1-2 Colchester was a great Boxing day present for me, this afternoon I'm off to watch the U's take on Southampton. Another big game. The top of league 1 is pretty exciting this year!

The referee had a good chat with Fagan and Gardner regarding the former's behaviour, it should be said though that he did the same with Evra and Giggs -the Frenchman can count himself equally lucky not to be sent off.

Good luck for this afternoon!

Re: Hull penalty yesterday, interestingly on MOTD they decided it shouldn't have been a penalty.. said no, the defender didn't make contact with the ball, but he had already trodden on it so he was falling over already. I'm not sure I totally agree with that - surely if you don't make contact with the ball and do with the player, then it is a foul and a penalty? Still, my point is the penalty which was given (and scored) seemed pretty feeble, so maybe 1 penalty out of the 2 decisions was a fair outcome! Hull were unlucky, but United made it comfortable in the end.

Arsenal Villa I went to, for some reason I enjoyed that game more than any I've been to recently.. just got very important and tense as the second half started.. the atmosphere raised as I haven't heard it raise at the Emirates for a while, and the team responded. Even before Fabregas came on, we were pressuring well I thought.. but naturally he makes a difference. It sort of highlighted his importance to this team, he really does see things the other players don't. As soon as he came on, the improvement in the rest of the team is very noticeable. He linked up with Arshavin, which no one had been doing previously.. and everyone suddenly seemed more urgent in getting forward. He really is a brilliant player. My point to take from the game.. Diaby had a very good match, which is promising.

Fulham currently leading Chelsea 0-1 at half time, which if they can hold onto it (which I doubt, but hope) would be a fantastic result for us. Our next 4 games are Portsmouth away (I'm going :)), Bolton home, Everton home, Bolton away (I'm going :)).. Bolton home is our game in hand. If we want to mount a realistic title challenge, we have to be looking at 12 points out of 12 from those 4, or near enough. Exciting times really. Something about us just doesn't quite convince me though.. Denilson is out, Fabregas could be out, and Song goes to African Cup of Nations after next weekend.. that could leave us light on midfielders. Also, I believe we need another, good striker.. to score some of the goals van Persie would've scored, if we are serious about this season. We'll see what happens.

True, I should have added that Man United seemed to be turning the ball over as much as Hull City were. That's what made it more frustrating for a neutral to watch, because United were a bit vulnerable and Hull City weren't quite able to capitalize on the mistakes. I think your boys had a good approach to the game and really had a go, it was a closer match than the scoreline indicated.

No player is bigger than the club...but having said that, Torres is a massive player for Liverpool and Rafa and the owners should try very hard to keep him here. He's the kind of player, along with Gerrard, that you build a team around. I don't think he'll go anywhere, but his attitude lately has not been good.

Looks like Chelsea pulled this one out to beat Fulham, but with the top four being so inconsistent these days the African Cup of Nations looks set to have a big impact on the Premier League.

He certainly made an impact, there's no questioning that – but has there been any further news on his hamstring? From what I'd heard it was unclear if it was a recurrence of the pull or not. If it keeps him out for a further couple of weeks then in the long term the gamble of bringing him on may not pay off...

As we've discussed previously though, and as you say in your post, there are some eminently winnable games coming up for you in the next few weeks. Portsmouth and two league ties against Bolton are matches that hopefully you'll administer thumpings in, from our point of view at least. ;)

I've heard a few rumours that Arsenal may be looking to recruit in the January window, what with injuries and the African Cup of Nations – any possible names we should be looking out for?

Knowing us we've got our eyes on an oft-injured African striker, just what we need to plug the holes in the lineup.

A very quick review of the game I went to yesterday. It have, quite literally, everything. Colchester 2 - 1 Southampton.

If both sets of fans are abusing the ref, you know he's having a bad game! Southampton away fans are amazing, very vocal, and much better than ours were yesterday. The first half was very flat and was a scrappy one, lots of petulance from both sides. Keving Lisbie scores a classic 'pro evolution soccer through-ball' goal (if you've played Pro evo you know exactly what I mean.

The second half was a bit odd. I was sitting just behind the subs bench on the half way line, and about half way through the second half (after we'd scored a carbon copy second goal), a fog descended onto the pitch. Now I'm not sure what it was like at pitch level, but from where I was sitting I had real trouble working out what was going on... We conceded a penalty, though for what I don't know (the keeper did something, but he wasn't sent off) and conceded. 2-1. At this point, with about 6/7 minutes to go it all got a bit comical. Whenever the ball went into the far corner of the stadium, it went totally silent in the whole ground, as neither set of fans could see what was happening until the ball came out! I think had there been 20mins+ then the game would have been abandoned. Still 3 point, joint third, job done.

Non-game highlight: Child away supporter taking a running haymaker at a ball boy who he considered to be to slow at throwing the ball back into play. He missed (by miles). Dunno if he was thrown out or what...

Best set of fan banter (during the fog) to the tune of 'Bread of Heaven'

Soton: "we can't see the ****ing pitch"
U's: "we can't see you sneaking out"

Heh. Splendid. :D

We had a slightly amusing chant when we played Manchester United, also to the tune of Bread of Heaven, directed towards Mr A Wiley (Staffordshire) and questioning the exact nature of his relationship with Sir Alex. It probably wouldn't make it past the profanity filter but it got a cheer from the away support in any case. :p

Three points in a crucial game in Liverpool's quest for fourth spot. Hopefully that goal will give Torres a little motivation going forward.

I wonder if Benitez plans to take the Europa League seriously at all. Or if the need to finish fourth in the league will make him ignore all other competitions.

Gary Megson's been sacked by Bolton after throwing a 2-0 lead away against the mighty Tigers last nights. There were boos aplenty for him at the end of the match, and it looks like it's another managerial scalp for us. Heh.
