Canada vs USA tomorrow. What are your predictions? Who will win gold? Who ever wins will take the lead in gold medals.

Very happy Canada is facing the Slovaks next rather than Sweden. I'd hate the twins to have to shoot off against loui

Hmm, I haven't been following the women's hockey all that much. But obviously I'll watch the game tomorrow.

And yeah, you're right, I don't think the Canadian team is going to have many problems in the next round. I know that 16 (I believe) players on the Slovak team are NHL players, and Gaborik and Demitra can be great, but I just think that the Canadian team bonded quite well and is really playing on a different level. We'll see on Friday!!!

Indeed we will. Friday can't come soon enough... but at the same time I don't want the Olympics to end :(

Also, a curious thing was just mentioned on CTV. One Canuck player is guaranteed gold now. Sami Salo on Finland, Demitra on Slovakia, Kesler on Usa and of course Luongo on Canada!

Canucks represent at home!

Here's an interesting op-ed about Bettman versus the IOC regarding NHL players' participation in future Olympic games.

I have to admit, I think I'm actually on Bettman's side for probably the first time ever:eek: I feel dirty....

From a business point-of-view, the NHL really doesn't benefit from allowing their players to play in the Olympics. It doesn't create a plethora of new fans, and they don't share in any of the profits that the IOC rakes in from the increased interest in Men's Hockey. Plus, they have to worry about the risk of injury to the best players in the league. In the US, Hockey coverage is delegated to one of NBC's second tier channels (MSNBC, CNBC, USA), so if you don't get those channels, you're SOL. One of the main reasons the NHL participates is to try to increase US interest in the NHL. Hasn't really worked out that way, has it?

From a hockey point-of-view, I always want the NHL to be in the Olympics. We're seeing some fun and exciting hockey, and I don't want that to end.

However, the NHL is taking all the risk and the payoff isn't that great.

Thoughts?

I thought NBC completely dropped the ball on placing the USA v Canada game on MSNBC. It had 10 million viewers, which is the 2nd most viewers on that channel's history. Imagine if they actually put it on NBC.

I, too, am on Bettman's side here.

Like Ace Ventura did when he found out Einhorn was a man.

LOL

Classic.

So dirty.........

I think that the NHL has realized that, as exciting as it is to have all of their best players in the Olympics, they aren't really growing the Game much from participating. Perhaps they should face the fact that their fan base is their fan base, and they should work on catering to us. I think that improving things for their current fans will cause us to recruit new fans. Their marketing strategy of expansion to non-hockey markets and adding gimmicky rules hasn't really worked out well, now has it?

It's funny because it also had 10 million viewers in Canada (1/10th the population). I bet if it was on NBC in the US you would have closer to 15 - 20 million. Unfortunately everyone in Canada already watched the NHL!

In terms of Bettman... his argument is very logical. The NHL is sacrificing a lot, and not getting anything out of it. There are two things we can do... drop the NHL players from the Olympics or make the broadcasters in the United States come up with a plan that will increase people's awareness of how awesome the NHL is.

I'm neutral on the issue atm

Finnish Women won the bronze!!! YAY! :D Im so proud of them!

Oh and our president is there to watch, lol

Gold medal for Canada! The Canadian women team did great! This was a very enjoyable game. Let's see if we're going to see another repeat along the same lines on Sunday. :)

The women did their job! Now the men have to prove they have what it takes as well!:D

Why are the Finn women all flashing gang signs at the camera as they receive their bronze?:p

Didnt see that, but probably cos they are such kids, heh..
But congrats to Canada for winning the gold!! Enjoy it now, cos it wont happen with men! :D

Im up cos im watching figure skating, one of them Finns is a local girl, skating in the same team (or whatever its called) where i was when i was younger, woohoo! GO girls!

LOL

I was joking about the gang signs. They were actually making heart shapes with their hands. It was cute.

Good for the Canadian women. It probably wasn't the best decision, but it doesn't bother me that much that they went out 30 minutes after the game ended (and the fans were all gone) to celebrate where they won.

The IOC needs to lighten the frig up.

I've not read the whole of this thread, so sorry if it's covered elsewhere but does anyone know where I can watch the Olympic ice hockey games live on the internet? The coverage here in England is shocking!

You will make my -Slovak- girlfriend very happy :)

Something happened with Kiprusoff, well the first goal was just stupidness and after that he lost it and couldnt recover from that and then boom boom and 6-0. Just wow... :( I feel so bad for them because they dont suck, they are good when the game is going "normally". Oh well, i dont know...
