I know. But you've seen all the same games I have. So you know why I am not optimistic. The Eagles could go into Cowboys stadium and shock the world. But I get the feeling that golf, not football, is on the mind already.

As far as the Flyers go, until they knock off the dumb penalties and the spectating as other teams walk up to the net, I don't know what can be done about them.

Well, it appears the secret is actually to play the Leafs. They will take the dumb penalties for us.

That said, I hate to see the Leafs playing so poorly (unless it's against Philly of course). I wish they'd get their act together.

I know the Flyers are a mediocre team at best:(,but are the Leafs that bad:rolleyes:

So I have come to a conclusion:

With his latest outburst, Ron Wilson has shown that he is incapable of inspiring his players; if his players are not performing, its all their fault and not his. He had absolutely no right to call out a player like that, and to attack the media for doing their job is ridiculous. Members of the media attend all kinds of practices. He is just proving once and for all that he is just a selfish self-centered prick.

I am sorry to call him the coach for team USA and I hope that they fail horribly so that the whole world can see that even with the "best" players he can get, he cannot get them to win.

Canucks win tonight 4 - 0. Luongo records his 50th career shutout. Canucks have won 7 of their last 8 games. 1st in the NW Division, 5th in the conference, 7th in the league.

Mind you they still haven't embarked on the longest road trip in NHL history. We'll see how that goes.

Also Burrows with two hatricks in a row

I don't have a huge problem with his outburst. The Leafs really played like crap last night. They were lazy. They didn't show up. I don't blame him for being pissed off (as he said).

I don't have a huge problem with him calling out Kessel either. He needs to have a fire lit under his butt. Kessel knows he's the best player on the team, and as Wilson said, he's a professional- he can handle it. Never mind the 1 goal in 10 games- I think he's like a -5 in that span as well (-2 on the season). If you're not scoring, at least go back to playing the fundamentals and the goals will come.

I don't think that he attacked the media for doing their job. He criticized the NHL's policy of allowing the media to observe team practices. He didn't complain that they report things that happen during practice- he complained that they are able to be at practice. I don't disagree with him on that. Why aren't team practices closed like in the NFL?

I think he knew what he was doing. He knew the media was there at practice. He knew they would hear. I think he's trying to get the team to bond together against him. They haven't bonded well yet, so maybe this is what he needs to do for now.

Keep in mind, the Leafs are still a work in progress. They should be doing a little better than they are now, but I don't expect much for them this season. Burke's proclamation of them making the playoffs was premature. He should have kept his mouth shut about that. That was pointless.

EDIT: Someone needs to remind Carcillo that he's in a professional league now. Stop it with the junior sh*t. NHL fines Carcillo for throat-slash gesture.

Surely--
Thoughts on today's events??

I'm really liking today's events. Something needed to be done, and Burkie did it.

Trade #1:

I'm not going to miss Stajan, and although Mayers started to come on a little stronger in the last couple of games, he's no real loss either (plus he asked to be traded earlier this week). I think White will end up being a solid 3rd or 4th defenseman in the NHL, so it sucks to see him go, but you gotta give up something. Hagman I really liked, but he has been a pretty streaky player. He is a good-value player though, and I think he'll help the Flames.

I think Phaneuf will turn things around in Toronto. I think that Burke thinks of Phaneuf in the same way as he viewed Pronger when he acquired him in Anaheim. And Phaneuf is only 24 years old. Lots of upside. He hasn't had a great year, and has been the focus of controversy in Calgary, but I think that a fresh start is what he needs. Burke vouches for him as a person. I think that Keith Aulie and winger Fredrik Sjostrom will be nice additions to the team.

Now for trade #2:

I'm glad to see Blake finally get traded. I've had enough of his hard-working, under-producing ways. Let him be Ducks fans' frustration now.

I can't believe Burke was able to trade Toskala. I didn't see that coming, I thought it would happen after the season for nothing. I think that Giguere has a chance to return to form, mostly because the Leafs goalie coach, Francois Allaire, was Giguerre's teacher. I think that Giggy be a great teacher for The Monster. Now both goalies have the same style. Apparently, there was friction between Toskala and Allaire, with Toskala being unhappy with Allaire's recommendations to Toskala.

All in all, a good day for the Leafs.

These trades are a rarity in the salary cap era.... exciting stuff!

I still cannot figure out how the hell you preyed Phaneuf from Sutter; you really didn't give up very much for him. The Sharks had to pay a step(but fair) price for Heatley. The Toskala deal surprised me too; as soon as Hiller got his extension it became just a matter of time. The sad thing is Vesa will just sit on his Finish butt in Anahiem. I have to agree; t

Nevertheless I see the biggest loser being Calgary. I cannot even begin to understand what was going through Darryl's head. What possessed him to even consider giving up Dion ? And to not get a top tier player back is insane. This is a major deal that may not save their season but at least sends the message to the rest of the team that no one is safe and to play here you must earn it. Note that the only scenario that gets Kipper traded is if Brodeur is cloned and Calgary gives the Devils Trevor Kid.

And for the record, I have said and will always say we stole Thornton from Boston. Trading involves one giving up something that is normally of equal or greater value. Rarely does a team give up a gem and get a lump of cole in return.

Phaneuf's stock in Calgary has gone way down in the past year. He's been a bit of a problem in the dressing room for the Flames. If you look at the stats, Ian White actually has more points than Phaneuf this season. I think a lot of Flames fans were wishing for him to be traded out of town.

I don't think that Burke would have traded for him if he didn't have faith in Phaneuf's character.

Time will tell who the winner of that trade will be.

Regarding Thornton: At the time, people in Boston wanted nothing more than to trade Thornton. In the end, the Sharks won that trade.

It figures that Calgary would completely retool right before the Flyers game.

Grr.

I'm happy for all of the teams involved in their trades, I just don't want my team to be made an example of in a heavily covered game.

I wonder how many goals we can get disallowed tonight. They haven't been very lucky lately with the timing of some of the penalty calls. Maybe if they'd score a little more, we wouldn't lose the close ones.

When will the Rangers realize that they can not buy themselves a cup?

The team has no chemistry.

My Isles decided to take a few games off

No. Never.

They're playing above expectations this season....

Well, the first game for the new-look Maple Leafs, and they win 3-0. JS Giguere with the 30 shot shut-out, and Dion Phaneuf with a big fight in the first period and a +1 for the night.

I think that Phaneuf will be named the next Maple Leafs captain. The fans already love him, and based on this comment by Ron Wilson, he seems to want to lead the team: "He's gung-ho, seems to love hockey, and it rubs off on everybody. We could hear him talking in between periods from the coach's office, which is almost two rooms away and three doorways. And you could hear him the whole time in between periods."

Unfortunately for the Flames, their first game last night didn't turn out so well: they were shutout 3-0 at home.....

I must say that I'm really impressed with what Burke did this Sunday. Hopefully he'll continue to show us that he actually has a plan!

Go Leafs.....

I caught the first couple of periods of the Toronto game. Wow. If they can keep it up, it would be fantastic. I want them to kick everybody's butt in the east except for Philly. :D

I'm glad they were home for that. Their fans deserve that kind of game more regularly.

And I'm sure Calgary will pick things up. They just had too much change overnight to get things together. We'll see what they look like after the Olympic break.

I see my Western Conference team mauled the Blue Jackets. I was out at dinner, so I missed watching the game. I love the NHL GameCenter, it works on my Mac, and I can watch the games a couple of days later if I miss them live.

No. Never.

Well, we know that at least :p

They're playing above expectations this season....

Oh, without a doubt they are. Since they are playing above expectations, I know expect them to make a run for a playoff spot and get in (and quickly get ran out).

Color me impressed so far.

2 huge pickups for your Leafs. Phaneuf and Giggy will more than help this team out.

^^^^ It looks like I will be right with my prediction: everyone is talking about naming Phaneuf the next Leafs captain. I don't think it'll happen until next season though. I'm sure he'll get an "A" before the end of this season.

Anyway..... Kovalchuk is a Devil. It's weird to see a pure offensive talent being on a defensive team like the Devils. Will he adjust to their style of play or will they adapt their style to suit him? That will be interesting to see. Atlanta got some good young talent out of NJ- good deal for both sides. NJ needs another D man now though..... Scott Niedermeyer perhaps?

Guess who the Leafs play Friday night? Yup. The Devils.

EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing..... I think that Kovalchuk is a pretty big douchebag for telling everyone that he wants to stay in Atlanta, and then turning down a 12 year $101 million offer. If you want to stay somewhere, and you are offered the richest deal in the NHL, you stay. Apparently, Atlanta made a number of offers, and instead of coming back with counter-offers, he just refused them. I think that Kovy wanted to try to maintain the 'good guy' image. I'm guessing they didn't anticipate Waddell actually telling everyone about the deal that was offered. Good for Waddell. I think, that based on the circumstances, he got as much as he was going to get for Kovy. Everyone in the league knew that he was dealing from a position of weakness. There was no way he was going to get a top-line forward, a top Dman, a top prospect and a 1st rounder. Also, I would be shocked in NJ offered Kovy that kind of money. That isn't really NJ's style. So we'll see if he ends up being a rental.....

Kovy has moved to a team with almost as poor attendance as the Thrashers, so that won't be too big a deal.

But I don't see them paying him the money he wants. No, I see him in New York, since they seem to have a bottomless budget. Well, that, and the Flyers fan in me expects him to stay in the division now just to screw with my team.

I will absolutely have the Toronto game on my GameCenter in 3 hours. I want to see how that game goes now.

It doesn't matter if a team has a bottomless budget (or seemingly unlimited funds). The fact is that there is a salary cap in the NHL, and no team can spend above that hard-cap. It's not like baseball, where if you spend above the soft-cap the team pays a luxury tax.

It's not about who can spend that much money: it's about who is dumb enough to spend that much money. If a team gives him what he wants, they will be spending ~20% of their allowable budget on him. That doesn't leave much money available for a strong supporting cast. Sure, a team can do it and compete if they have a strong young team who aren't making the big money yet. But one day, those young players will become unrestricted free agents and will require a pay raise. They will end up going somewhere else.

Waddell traded Kovy because he knew: that even if they offered him more money and Kovy accepted it, they would screw themselves from being able to compete in the future. He wouldn't go any higher. Doesn't matter- Kovy wasn't staying for anything.

Sometimes it's better to have 2-3 amazing players than only 1 outstanding player. Kovy can't win the Cup on his own- he needs a strong supporting cast to win.

IMO, he's acting selfishly and doesn't show that he has any desire to win the Cup. However, you can't really fault the guy for wanting to get as much money as he can. However, you can fault him and his agent for not having the foresight on how such a large contract will affect the rest of the team.
