Well I tried the F1 management game thing. Never again. Its so buggy - I can't even delete my account at this point in time and the contact form isn't working. Its also horribly weighted - there's no combination of car, engine and drivers that can get you Brawn GP, and they're not even the most expensive team! For example, this is the best combination I could come up with:

Red Bull chassis
Renault engine
Nakajima
Fisichella

As I said, I'm leaving as soon as I can get it deleted. Any better ones out there?

Cheers for the help pachyderm, but unless a quasi-official one comes up I'll probably leave it.

In other news, good day for Brawn GP. Firstly ...

Motorsport's governing body has rejected the protest made by three Formula One teams about the legality of certain cars.

With F1 just days away from the start of the new season in Australia, the FIA has ruled that the cars of Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams are all legal.
Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault claimed a crucial part at the back of the car does not conform to new F1 regulations.

The protesting teams have appealed and this will be heard after 5 April.

BMW Sauber also originally protested but it was thrown out because their paperwork was not correctly submitted.

The initial verdict was delivered after a six-hour hearing with the stewards presiding over Sunday's Australian Grand Prix rejecting the complaint. An appeal was lodged and this will be heard following next weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix.

And then ...

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group is within hours of confirming its involvement in Formula 1 as a major sponsor of the Brawn GP team.

Following reports that initially appeared in The Times, AUTOSPORT has confirmed that Branson is now en route to Melbourne to confirm that he will become a backer of the Brackley-based team. Sources say he is so keen to press ahead with the deal that he has cut short a family ski holiday to finalise the deal in person.

Brawn GP has run unbranded so far, sticking to the white, yellow and black corporate colours used in testing so far , but are now poised to unveil a major rebranding exercise. AUTOSPORT understands that it is possible new colours could be used on the cars as early as this weekend's Australian Grand Prix, where the team are among the favourites for victory. As The Times reported, Branson is expected to confirm his involvement in a press conference at the Albert Park track this weekend.

So any ideas of a colour scheme? In my youth as a budding F1 designer (in truth, it was the liveries I designed :p), I had a Virgin F1 car in red with black and yellow (much like the trains), which I thought looked pretty snazzy.* I'm gonna go for a white with red and black Virgin detailing, tho' a black or red car wouldn't surprise me.

* The other designs included a Pepsi sponsored white F1 car with blue and red detailing, a Microsoft sponsored (Xbox actually) Audi, and a British Racing Green Caterham F1 (!), complete with large number in a white circle on the car and a yellow nose cone.

something based on this seems reasonable

That was a great Friday practice, nice to be able to watch it on the red button on BBC1 while I had my Breakfast. If the times are anything to go by we are going to have a great race.

Maybe they will sport "V Australia" or "Virgin Blue" livery for this round, and then have a formal Virgin Atlantic livery for the rest of the season?

Or does the FIA require one livery for the entire season (I know they don't allow different liveries on a team's two cars).

no, it has happened frequently that cars have special, GP-specific liveries, so i suppose if virgin indeed becomes a major sponsor, they could use 'theme variations'.

I actually think the 'campaign' concept could result very effective, as it would build the expectation of "how is it different this week?".
given the wide range of "virgin" products, that would be easily achieved.

Brawn GP 1-2, oh yeah!

Bring it on.....
ahhhhhhh why do you got to say something like that.
i just got done watching practice.

anyway, truth in 24, was great.:D
i watched the first min and it was super grainy and horrible then for some reason i watched it last night and it was fine, actually really good.

is it just me or do the cars look like freshmen in high school, all awkward and weird looking.

I wanna know how KERS is treating them!

Well the KERS cars are listed in bold:

  1. Button
  2. Barrichello
  3. Vettel
  4. Kubica
  5. Rosberg
  6. Glock
  7. Massa
  8. Trulli
  9. Raikkonen
  10. Webber
  11. Heidfeld
  12. Alonso
  13. Nakajima
  14. Kovalainen
  15. Buemi
  16. Piquet
  17. Fisichella
  18. Sutil
  19. Bourdais
  20. Hamilton

So, erm, not great really. Each team has probably spent around £20 - £30 million developing KERS so it is just a huge waste of money really!

aww common, give it a chance! Surely there's a lot of skill involved in terms of timing and so forth. These drivers need some time to figure out how to maximize its use. It woulda been cool to see it blow people away right from the start, but don't go calling it a waste of money just yet!

Besides, it could be that the restrictions placed on the systems were too strict. Maybe the engineers can get more out of these things if the rules would allow. Some times it takes a while to establish rules to ensure a fair race in view of a variety of technologies.

Thanks for the list!

The thing is this "push-to-pass" button works ok in lesser formula (I know Formula Palmer Audi use it) because, frankly, a lot of the drivers don't know what they are doing! Now in Formula One the teams and engineers will have spend months working out where it is best to use the KERS systems on the track. They will know that you need to press it for 0.5 seconds coming out of turn 2 and then 1.5 seconds after leaving turn 12, etc.... Now every team will have come to the same conclusion so you will NOT see people flying past other KERS cars as they will all be using it at the same time.

The other, main reason why teams are not running it is this:

KERS is heavy, 20 - 30kg (around 5% the weight of the car!) so it only really fits at the rear of the car around the engine / gearbox. The new slick tyres give far more front grip (as there is proportionally more rubber at the front of the car) so the teams need to move the weight of the car towards the nose which does not help with all this weight at the back in terms of the KERS system. Also running the extra weight removes the amount of ballast that the teams can use so they have far less control over weight distribution, which is arguably more important that the 60 extra bhp you get for 6.6 seconds per lap.

The only advantage that teams running KERS this year will have is that they will understand the systems better for next year when I think they will be made compulsory.

That is a really really good point, I hadn't thought of that. Vehicle simulation takes away all the fun!

funny how kubica refused the KERS system, and he finished better than the rest of them!

The reason he didn't use KERS is he is a 'fat ba$tard'.

As mentioned earlier, KERS reduces the amount of ballast you can run and with Kubica being heavier than Heidfeld he was already very close to the limit so it would only give him a few kg to play with so I can't see Kubica running KERS for a long time.

EDIT: The two Toyota's have been DQ'd because of the good old flexi wing. The grid is now:

Button
Barrichello
Vettel
Kubica
Rosberg
Massa
Raikkonen
Webber
Heidfeld
Alonso
Nakajima
Kovalainen
Buemi
Piquet
Fisichella
Sutil
Bourdais
Hamilton
Glock
Trulli

Lewis is on a charge already! At this rate by tomorrow morning he maybe in the top 10.

Good to see the starting positions mixed up a bit. Honda must be kicking themselves while Mr Branson will be very happy, perfect timing eh?

it's a sad day for us honda fans. :(

but congrats to jenson and rubens, in my heart they're still honda. ;)

Finally caught up, didn't get up to watch, recorded it instead. BBC coverage not too dissimilar from ITV.

Will be very interesting to see how it all folds out tomorrow and then during the next 5-6 races.

Good start to the season. I will be getting up to watch the race live.

I did find myself waiting for an ad break though, so I could make a cup of coffee...

The new commentary team seems as thought they'll be good. It's nice to not have to listen to James Allen...:)

If Honda where still involved with the team it would not be at the front of the grid. Simulations of the car with a Honda engine compared to a Merc engine show about 1 - 1.5 seconds per lap difference. Not only was the Honda down on power but the ancillary devices on the Merc engine are a lot lighter.
