P.S. for a bit of a laugh, just seen the Honda "impossible dreams" advert with the old Honda RA106. Hmm impossible dreams eh! Well they are impossible when you have a dog of an engine.

Yeah I saw that advert too and thought it was a bit odd that they re-used it considering what happend.

Sorry, not a joke. Courtesy of Bernnie.

Currently those who have spoken out, some more tha others, about the change include:

Webber
Alonso
Schumacher, M.
Montezemolo
Hamilton
Button

That is a total of 10 world champions. I really hope they revert this. I really don't like it.

I don't quite understand why they've gone with the trouble of doing this. The amount of drivers who were racing for the championship last year were numerous with a great number who wern't that far off if they had maybe that tiny amount more from their car.

I foget who, but one of the drivers made that exact point with regard to Kubica and the 2008 season.

Looks like they've seen sense... for this year at least:
Formula 1 has axed plans for a new scoring system in 2009 just nine days before the start of the season.
The sport's governing body, FIA, announced earlier this week that the driver with the most wins would be crowned world champion.
But following a protest from F1 teams, FIA says it will defer the introduction of the new system until 2010.

Truth in 24....not F1 but hey it's racing and so it's coool

Slightly off topic but thought the "guys" here would enjoy it. Saw "Truth in 24" last nite and it was AWESOME! Well, I didn't actually get to see all of it as I joined it a bit late. FYI, documentary on the Audi R10's 2008 series culminating in their astounding Le Mans win. If you get the chance to see a re broadcast (SPEED) or actually find it at a theater (I believe that Audi is trying to screen it) do see it. The film started at the 12 Hrs of Sebring and followed the Audi's through the season. There is one scene that lasts for 3 minutes with Allan McNish watching a in-car video of the Le Mans circuit and commenting on every bump, every gear change, and every rumble strip. That scene is TREMENDOUS. You can see why these guys won.

spoken like a true nascar man... lol ;)
i don't think that only one or two wins are going to clinch a title...

Actually, one of the reasons NASCAR went to "The Chase" to determine the championship was because drivers who only won one or two races, but who was consistently in the Top 5 or Top 10, were winning the title over someone who had one many more races, but also suffered a number of DNFs.

I am glad that the FIA has reversed itself on this rule. All it would have really done is compel drivers to take risks to try and win a race. I do think there should be a larger point spread between first and second - say three points instead of the current two and the old four - but part of the reason the FIA went to eight positions instead of the old six was to allow the smaller, weaker teams a chance to score those all important Constructors points which are used to decide not just winnings for the season, but also how much travel support money you get. Assuming this is still the case, if the FIA would just agree that all teams get a flat "travel allowance", the small teams would not be penalized for paying their own freight to the "fly-away" races.

I also think the spread should be wider.
i am also in favour to extend the positions that get points to 10, maybe even 12

for 8 scoring positions i would go with:
16-10-7-5-4-3-2-1
meaning that a win+any other point position is > than a 2nd+3rd
podium is separated from lower scoring positions.

for 10 scoring positions i would go with:
25-15-10-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
for reasons similar to above, while keeping the numbers 'round'.
notice that this is essentially the same as the old 10-6-4-3-2-1, just expanded to give point to more positions, which makes the races so much more interesting.

or one could go Fibonacci, where each position is worth as the sum of the 2 following ones all the way through.
for 8 pos: 34-21-13-8-5-3-2-1
for 10 pos: 89-55-34-21-13-8-5-3-2-1
big incentive to pass, but the numbers look 'weird' and possibly there is too much weight on the win

FYI - this (at least as of last night) was a free download on iTunes. I grabbed it and gave it a watch. Very good documentary! :)

Very glad to see the win system overturned (at least for now). This will only be my third season following F1, and really the only off season I have followed in detail, but I'm already tired of Bernie. He comes off as an arrogant, stuborn and spiteful old man.

The season is almost about to start, I can't wait :D

Last years finish was easily the best I've ever seen in my years of watching automotive racing. Hopefully this year can top that!

I think the only way you could top last year would be by having 8 drivers still up for winning the championship come Abu Dhabi.

Sadly, I forgot to record Truth in 24. The iTunes download is only SD widescreen while ESPN showed it in HD. Still kicking myself. At least I was in Sebring at the time it showed. The new R15 is most impressive and very wicked looking.

I was more concerned with seeing it than the HD factor. Picture looked good anyway. However, (and I think this was intentional) the picture had a lot of grain. I'm not sure HD would have made this "better"/go away. In fact, if it didn't go away it may have made it look worse.

I have to disagree. I watched it on my 67" 1080p DLP. It was really begging to be in HD. It did not look good in SD.

Thanks for the tip. Downloading now. Not really concerned about the quality right now. I plan to buy the DVD or hopefully Blu Ray when it comes out. Can't wait to see McNish going through the circuit again. That was just AWESOME! Cheers

BTW, I'm excited bout the season beginning. Kind of a bummer though. Will be going to a concert out of town that night with my wife and spending the night in a hotel. I don't think she'd like me watching the race in all it's glory (read volume) at 2am. Guess I'll have to read about it or maybe watch a replay.

so this movie you guys are talking about is called "Truth in 24".
i just downloaded it off itunes, but going to go look on a private site;)
