I still wouldn't call it a slap on the wrist. If I get caught speeding and pay a $1000 fine, it isn't going to impact my household in "any significant way," but I'm not going to come away thinking it was a slap on the wrist. Spin it any way you want, McLaren still paid a significant penalty for spygate. The fact they recovered well and went on the win the driver's championship is irrelevant.

i have no interest in rehashing an old quarrel, but it is always a matter of perspective.
If you made 10K out of a robbery, get caught and were fined 20K as a punishment, it wouldn't be to bad for you, especially if you got to keep the original 10K.

And the fact that the fine didn't affect their sebsequent performance does speak to how 'harsh' the penalty was in context.

I'll just agree to disagree then. :)

They were already disqualified for the race in question? That would be similar compared to past cases possibly.

Think Schumacher was sent to the back of the grid when he blocked the track at Monaco.

Fueling ban announced (or confirmed) as well.

I don't like that at all. I suppose you still need to pit for tires, but seems to defeat a lot of strategy both for qualifying and for the race itself. :(

It used to work in the Mansell-era. I prefer to see races won on the track rather than with pit-stops. If we get more overtaking on the track that can only be a good thing. That, and some cars "no-stopping" at Monaco!

Tire warmers also banned:mad:

IMO tire warmers make for a safer start, and make for tires that last longer. I even use tire warmers on my RC cars on a colder day.

Tire warmers are also very cheap considering what they provide to the team.

I believe in LeMans tire warmers are also banned, but they got around it by building a "hot tent" LOL

it's going to be very hot in the pit next year, i don't envy the mechanics with full gear on and heat cracked up to max :D!

i do like the no-refuel part.
obviously ,as a consequence, there will be massive differences in weight from beginning to end. where they compensated in any way before refuelling was allowed? Is it legal to add ballast during the race?

I believe the minimum weight excludes fuel. That's why BAR got done in for having an extra fuel tank. link

ive been busy lately, um what the hell is happening?

Optional budget cap for next year of £40million. Total excludes engine, hospitality, drivers, money from merchandise etc. Teams that take it get benefits of which we know little at the moment. One of these will be non-rev limited engines (eg new customer Cosworth at 20,000rpm). Fancy designs on floor and front wing will be allowed for teams on budget. New Costs Commission to oversee. All teams to get £10million for competing for transport. Autosport link here. Most teams happy, apart from Ferrari overtly, but also Williams and McLaren do not wish a two tier system. Macrumors regulars undecided! :p

Refuelling to be stopped from 2010. Ostentatiously to reduce costs (no refuelling rigs to be brought), and encourage fuel efficiency. Tyre warmers also banned; I presume to encourage Bridgestone to make tyres more applicable to road use, as well as encouraging differences between teams in how they use tyres (cf Brawn struggling to warm tyres but not wearing them out as quickly as RBR who are good over one lap but tyres maybe grain worse over longer stints).

Virgin not neccessarily gonna sponsor Brawn GP as title sponsor for season. Virgin admit that their deal could be bettered by another team. Brawn apparently want a 3 year deal. I for one would be disappointed if some Jonny-come-lately ends up being their title sponsor after this start.

Lola, Prodrive and USGP favourites to land spots for 2010 Formula 1 season, tho' that's my honest opinion. Prodrive had the spot before they were refused the use of McLaren chassis for 2008, Lola everyone knows about, and USGP adds the kinda "new market opportunity" Bernie loves.

Hope this helps!

PS: What do you guys think of my new 'tar??? Any suggested improvements?

Toyota is scoring points on a regular basis, Vettel is proving to be a superstar, Button+Brawn unstoppable so far...

... except Toyota are struggling to win, Vettel is a superstar after being blamed for pranging with Kubica for second place in Australia (general consensus: 50:50, but Kubica should have waited) but then wins in the rain in China. "Monsoon" conditions in Malaysia means Button wins but with half points (<75% race distance completed due to rain and bad light).

I think thats it covered. Oh, apart from Lewis lying to the stewards. No biggie ;):p

As I recall from watching the races, all they were allowed to do was change the tires (back then I don't recall them ever making changes to the wings to compensate for the weight of the fuel being burned off between each stop).

The cars did indeed change handling characteristics a good bit as they grew lighter, especially the V12 and V10 cars who balanced greater power against higher weight versus the V8 cars.

Have a read through the updated technical regulations. There's some interesting things in there for budget capped teams.

I'm surprised that most of the news sites haven't been reporting that 4WD has been allowed. It's probably to allow the teams to fit KERS MGUs to the front wheels as well, but it opens up full 4WD and maybe the return of front diffs to aid under braking.

I can't imagine the acceleration of a 4WD F1 car with no rev limit and double the KERS power.

Blimey!

They just need to allow side skirts and 1200bhp again.

nice, thanks.
geez what the hell is happening to this sport :(

ya ive watched the races and its amazing that the brawns are doing so good. i mean honda developed the car last year and put a lot of time into it, then this year just wanting to bail out was weird. i mean if it was me i would have at least tried there new car for a year and not just waste what research the have done.

Well Max has been talking about a return to old fashioned ways of creating downforce. He was a wee bit annoyed about spending millions on using a new alloy of madeupium that would shave thousandths off lap times but would never go near a road car. I guess we might see a slow reversal of the post-1994 rule changes to reduce speed in order to cut costs - probably not regarding the fully-electronic Williams that Mansell won the title in but perhaps along the aero designs that had to be binned following the backlash following Senna's and Ratzenburger's deaths.

Re Senna's death, I remember being absolutely gutted at the time. As a family we were checking Ceefax to find out the latest. It took hours before he was officially pronounced dead; tho' of course he was killed instantly on impact. Really sad - he would've been world champion for sure that year. There was a great Independent "What if?" article a few years later - they hypothesised Senna would have tried to resurrect Ferrari, with Schumacher taking Hakkinen's role in McLaren. Could've been epic ...:(

It was a dark weekend for F1 that one...

That **** gives me goose bumps there. He was my idol growing up in Rio I think he was everyone's idol, very sad day that was.
