This really sucks. I hope somebody comes in to buy the team to enable 20 cars for Australia.

Also, I read somewhere there was a rule requiring at least 20 cars, but Honda's exit would leave 18. Is there any truth to that?

Just think there were 22 2 years ago. :(

Maybe somebody like Audi would come in to compete with Merc and BMW?

The limit is 16.

I just hope this isn't the start of a monopoly by the big players squeezing all of the smaller teams out. Maybe the budgets should be limited to make it all more competitive/affordable for all? Honda spent £300m a year and that obviously wasn't enough...

Audi will not enter F1. See my post above. They just cancelled their US program in ALMS.

But despite that, I don't think Audi was interested anyway. Like Porsche, their forte and focus is in sports car racing.

I read that in a thread on the Autosport forums too, but there appears to be no source to substantiate that it is 16 cars?

I'm assuming that this was changed at some point during the mid-00's?

After the Super Best Friends withdrawal from F1 I seem to recall hearing some commentary discussion by the Speed Three Amigos that Bernie has to guarantee a field of 20 cars, and if there are less he loses what he gets from TV rights.

Absolutely not surprised by Honda. I actually thought about this earlier. Everyone else is in a credit crunch and these lot spend £100s of millions like its nothing.

I can see others following suit. I'm thinking about Mallia's Force India possibly next?

Oh Jenson was whack anyway dont think we'll miss him.

What, except blind stubbornness, is keeping this acronism alive??

;)Of course it's unfortunate that the grid for next season could be further reduced, but... perhaps we should ask ourselves what exactly have either Honda or Toyota actually contributed F1?

They own two of the finest tracks ever to host a race - Suzuka and Fuji Speedway. Both of these circuits are a class or two above the garbage like Singapore, Valencia, Bahrain, Istanbul and the other garbage that keeps getting added to the calendar.

I really like Istanbul a lot. But I agree that Valencia and Singapore were crap this year.

F1 now officially sucks.

not to be pessimistic or w/e but i want more teams drop out and then f1's rules will have to change.

Bernie Ecclestone is a douche. i do not think he likes racing anymore.

if what i said bothers you mods then im sorry but someone has to say it.

I've already begun to accept the demise of F1. With the loss of the USGP, the CA GP, and the start of abandoning European venues for Middle and Far East ones, it seems to me F1 is on it's way out of the west and out of western minds. All because Bernie has gotten overly greedy about fees and made it unaffordable to traditional venues. He'll be dead by the time it all backfires, so he probably doesn't care about its future anyway.

Someone will buy Honda before the season begins.

They've apparently been working on their 2009 car for a long time, and I'd be surprised if they didn't do very well.

I don't think you can honestly call Honda a smaller team, when they are a larger car company than Fiat (Ferrari), Renault, Daimler (M-B/McLaren), and BMW.

Don't lump Istanbul in with crap like Valencia.

Honda to become ProDrive?
David Richards, the former Benetton and BAR boss, is considering a return to Formula One as Honda’s saviour - a move which would place a question mark against Jenson Button’s future.

Richards has been contacted by two parties interested in buying the for-sale team and running it with his expertise.

That would help save some of the 750 workforce at Honda’s factory in Brackley, Northamptonshire, but Button, their 28-year-old British driver, could be among those surplus to requirements given that he and Richards parted on bad terms when Honda took over BAR in 2004.

Buying Honda would also spare ProDrive the tens of millions of pound "deposit" any new team is required to pay FOCA/FIA, is it not?

Not sure about the ProDrive bit. I saw a seperate interview with Richards where he stated it doesn't seem financially sound due to the high cost associated with the facilities in England. While it may be a bargain to buy the team, it wouldn't be a bargain to continually finance.

Oh no!

It seems the standard engine idea built by Cosworth might go ahead now.

This really sucks, I hate this, Formula 1 goes down the drain if this goes ahead.

I just saw that myself, but it sounds like this has changed considerably from what was first discussed (although I'm sure Bernnie will try to claim it as a victory for the sport and say how it shows they are at the head of technology and finances, etc.). If I read that right teams will have the option to use their own engines (e.g. Ferrari and McLaren), but the power output of those will be matched to these standard units. I guess it doesn't seem like a bad idea, but if I were Ferrari and McLaren I'd also want the engine development restrictions lifted as well - otherwise I don't see any constructors influence showing.
