What was frustrating with the Alonso/Hamilton/McLaren times was that McLaren made large gains thanks to Alonso's development skills. Hamilton benefited from those developments. Towards the end of the season, Alonso was pretty much ousted from the team. One of the main disadvantages he had to face was not being allowed to race under his preferred type of brakes. He was just told to "come race", and with all that, I still think he preformed brilliantly.

Well once he and De La Rosa went to the FIA and said "Oh, by the way, yeah, we really did use the Ferrari team data and management lied to you" he pretty much slit his own throat at that point. Especially since he didn't do it to be "noble", but to knife McLaren in the back.

McLaren is very much a "team" environment and if Alonso thought he was going to be Alpha Dog and get everything handed to him, he should have just watched the Prost-Senna years at McLaren.

And I was under the impression that McLaren was willing to run different brake manufacturers for each car when they could. Some circuits just demand a certain spec (be it Hitco, Carbon Industries, or whathaveyou). I could be wrong and might be thinking of other teams or the current season, but the SPEED TV guys usually note what brake manufacturer is on what car and point out if two cars in one team have different brakes.

Ferrari first out of the block with 2009 car. How much better does the 2009 overhead shot look compared to the 2008:

I think these cars will grow on me and look OK:

I don't like the narrow/tall rear wing but the rest of the car looks better without all the crazy aerodynamics.

Force India VJM02 Revealed?

Someone on the web team uploaded their 09 calendar thing early, and these were included. It's probably the 09 livery overlaid on the 08 car, but it looks like they will be going for an Indian flag appearance of the car with orange and green (instead of red).

The fact that the Force India has a load of flick-up and barge-boards, plus the grooved tyres makes me think that is not the new car. If it is there must have been an FIA news black-out in Silverstone!

The Ferrari looks allot smoother, better than when there lots of bits sticking out, remember when cars had wings on the pods.

Hmmm ... the liverie appears darker - almost Ferrai red as opposed to Marlboro "scarlet". I had to check they were sponsoring them initially. Looks much better this year.

oops! my bad guys. i didn't know there was an existing thread w/the same photos side by side. so sorry...

Don't worry about it, love looking at the picutres. I am quite excited about seeing how these cars perform over a grand prix.

is it just me or is the rear wheel base narrower than the front?
whats the regulation on how wide the front splitter can be?

o ya, don't worry about posting pics to much, i think its actually good.

i think it is an optical illusion.

not sure about the splitter though. ;)

A lot of performace cars have a wider front track than rear, IIRC. Usually only a few mm though.

Really? I thought it was often the other way round: wider rear than front...

Certainly most performance (road) cars look like they have wider rear than front tracks.

Also it's interesting that the Williams has some bumps in the bodywork that none of the other cars have (yet) which seem to be to aid aerodynamics now that the flick-ups have been banned. You can see the bumps on the sidepods clearly in this picture...

The new BMW M5 has a 14mm wider front rack than rear.

Well there you go! Should certainly make it turn in better, although I would have thought it might make the rear more likely to slide?

Edit to add: for whatever reason my Elise has a wider rear track than front my about 50mm. Clearly car design is a complex area with many "correct" answers!
