If you don't follow hockey, dont try to analyze it. For his entire career, Chara has never been a dirty player. One fluke hit doesn't change that.

His attitude afterward is what I was talking about.

Oh please, go back to basketball or whatever. This is hockey. Pacioretty wasn't the first guy to get hit into the stantion, and he won't be the last unless they redesign the rinks. Blame the people for putting a 90 degree piece of glass right along the boards, and not the players who don't have time to analyze everything like the media does later in super slow mo. Hockey is definitely not super slow mo.

Excuse me? I play hockey zioxide. Started a little while ago. Difference between you and me is that I'd rather do it than watch it. Don't ****ing tell me what to do or what attitude to have. I know what it's about and how fast it is. I know full well this is not the first time this has happened. However, Chara could be a little more apologetic is all I'm saying. Had I done that, I'd be ****ing horrified, accidental or not. S*** happens- I get that. And I hate basketball. ;)

Not to get into this whole thing again........ but there's no way that Chara didn't know that there was a stanchion there. There just isn't. He knew it was there when he drove Pacioretty into it, but he just didn't think that the outcome would be so bad. I didn't need super-slow-mo to see Chara drive Pachioretty's head into the stachion at the last moment of the hit.

Anyway....that was sooooooooo regular season. Who cares about that anymore?:D

Dude
It's not like Miller stood on his head. He just played good enough to win the game :p I'm still not impressed ;)
otav89

Miller pretty much always plays "just good enough" to win the game. And on the other nights, he stands on his head.:D

You should be more worried than you are.;)

LeahM and Leekohler = Fair Weather Fans ;)

Be nice, robo.;)

You need to watch Mr Stevens throw some hits. He hits to hurt, and that's the way it should be. If you're coming down the ice with your head down, you deserve to get your head drilled into your ass. This is hockey, not soccer. The pansy crap needs to stop. It's ruining the game. Soon there's going to be no contact all together.

Never going to happen. Hockey will always be super violent, and yes it should be- within reason. That's part of what makes it fun. But there need to be rules about this kind of thing. Otherwise, they'll just start taking corpses off the ice instead of injured. I don't think anyone wants that either.

No, it isn't. Players should hit to take the other player out of the play, they shouldn't be hitting with intent to injure. This is a professional league, not some minor league east coast circus. This isn't Slap Shot.

Contact/hitting/body-checking/fighting should serve a strategic purpose.

Same thing goes for fighting: if it doesn't serve a purpose, it makes a mockery of The Game. Bertuzzi's fight in Detroit's win over Phoenix two days ago served a purpose. It proved a point and jacked up the team. When two goons line up during a face off and agree to fight just to justify their jobs, that doesn't serve a purpose.

Hockey is definitely not super violent. I've played hockey for over 20 years, and the game has definitely changed a lot. The only reason for all the concussions these days are from the fast speed of the game. Faster speed makes hits hard, wipe outs harder, less reaction time and basically everything harder on the body. In woman's hockey, there isn't even hitting, and they have WAY more concussions than the NHL has. If they want to make the problems stop, they need to slow down the game. Not make it quicker. Hockey is turning into a ***** sport. You get penalties for absolutely nothing. It's stupid. You touch a guys stomach area with your stick and it's an automatic hooking penalty. I miss the days when Lindros would cross the blueline with his head down, and Stevens would come across and put him in his place. You want to score? You work for it.

And don't even get me started with the goalies having smaller equipment and before the talks about making the nets bigger. They want the final scores to be 10-9.

Fair enough, you've been doing it longer than I. I just got into it recently. I goaltend, so to me, it's pretty darn crazy, and I love it. ;) It's that certain level of aggression that I like about it. I've seen some crazy things happen to some guys already, but maybe that's just my perspective being kind of new. God, I hope the nets don't get bigger. I'm 6'3" and around 200#, and it's tough enough already. I don't know about slowing it down. Is that even possible at this point?

Agreed on all points. Fights are stupid. I understand why they happen, but they're still ridiculous. I know I get wound up, either at myself or my team or both, but really, there's no excuse for it and I need to learn to let things go more. That's been my challenge more than anything is getting my emotions under control when things aren't going well. All it does is throw you off and make you do worse.

Yes. All they would need to do is to reintroduce the clutching and grabbing that they banned just after the lockout, as well as re-allowing players to 'pick' (like in basketball: getting in the way of an opposing player....this is called as an interference penalty right now). They could also bring the red line back into the game and ban the two-line pass.

I'm not saying that I would want to see any of that again......I think the players just need to take more responsibility for their actions and be more aware of themselves and other players while on the ice.

I agree. I think it should definitely be more of a self-control thing, even though that can be really difficult when you're in the middle of it. But yeah, I guess my issue with the whole thing was not what happened, but the reaction to it afterward by Chara. It just seemed like he was not taking responsibility for much at all.

I play both forward and goalie, but I played goalie at a high level for 17 years. I mainly just play forward when I play in summer leagues with the guys.

I've seen almost everything happen on the ice. From someone getting put through the glass on a hit, to someones heart stopping while playing. (That was hard to watch. RIP.)

But with that being said, Bettman is ruining the game. You might not see much of the changes where you play, because not all leagues follow the new NHL rules. But just watching hockey now in general is getting stupid. Commercial TV breaks? What the hell is that. I paid $200 to watch my Toronto Maple Leafs lose, not to watch a bunch of teens running around on the ice shoveling up snow. At first it was a commercial every 10 minutes of the game. Now it's every 5 minutes. What's next? Every 2 minutes?

Getting rid of the instigator rule was the biggest mistake they ever made. It's the reason why Crosby is out right now. If the pens had a big fighter that was able to jump on you when ever he wanted, people would think twice about hitting the teams star. Look at Bob Probert. He didn't fight for no reason, he fought because he was protecting his team. (Most of the time)

I could literally go on for an hour with everything I could say. And no, it's pretty much impossible to slow down the game with the current set of rules.

I'm hoping for an all Canadian hockey league. (With some of the popular US teams) I don't understand why Bettman would rather have a team stay in the US and get 7,000 fans out at a game, where they could easily move a team to multiple spots in Canada and sell out the building every night.

I hope you enjoy playing! Hockey is by far the toughest sport to play, and goalie is definitely the toughest position. By far. :)

Sorry, didnt realize you played. Still, what do you want Chara to do, send him a box of chocolates? Players get hurt in hockey, it's part of the game. I don't remember Cooke apologizing to Savard (or anyone really), Randy Jones apologizing to Bergeron, etc. Vilifying the guy for "not apologizing" is kinda crazy...

I do like playing, and TBH, goalie is the only thing I'm interested in. I started playing on a floor league and the spot fit me really well. It scared the hell out of me at first, but my captain insisted I try it. I did and the movement and everything just clicked for me very quickly. I found that I didn't mind taking hits and getting smacked with sticks and such as much as I thought. A friend of mine convinced me to go out on the ice, and so I have. It's been really fun so far. I really like it.

Yeah, I expect people to display some sort of remorse for things like this. But we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. ;)

It involves a lot of pressure and I handle pressure very well. Most goalies do, and that's another reason why it makes it so much fun. Just look at all those close NHL playoff games. LA and San Jose in OT... I'd love to play in that. Most people wouldn't be able to breathe even thinking about trying to play in net during a close game like that. The only painful part of being in net is taking the bullet slap shots off the mask. I'm not sure what kind of league you play in or how skilled the players are, but taking a 80 mph slap shot off the helmet isn't very fun. :p

And I remember my first time in net. I was pretty scared at first. But once you get the hang of it, you can't play anything else. :) Glad you enjoy it.

Oh- they've promised me I'll get the puck to the face. I made them promise. I need to know what it feels like so I can recover from it and come back. If it's going to happen, I'd rather it happens during practice first. I know, I'm sick. ;) There are guys on the team who have mean slap shots. But yeah, I know what you mean about playing goalie. It's awesome. I like the pressure too. It's the best part, but sometimes I do let my emotions get the best of me, I will confess.

Just had to point out that Marty St. Louis got a stick to the face and broke some teeth in game 1 and had to have a couple of root canals. That was two days ago. He's playing tonight, has logged the most on-ice minutes for the team so far, and already has an assist.

Now that's a friggin' hockey player.

Did you see the guy that just took the slapshot off the face and then walked off on his own?

Not to toot my own horn, I had broken my left foot from a slapshot. I was about to go out to sea so I was given a brace and out to sea I went.
Over time the bone never healed correctly and the spur developed. Over the years I continued to play 3 times a week, on average.
I finally saw the doctor after I couldn't lace the skate up.
That was on a Tuesday, I had surgery that friday. The spur was 1.25 round and nearly 3/8 of an inch tall. 4" incision
Went to work that Saturday night, shoe back on the foot 3 days after surgery and back in skates 8 days post surgery and back to game play 13 days after surgery.
On the second follow up, on day, 18 I had skated 2 games and 2 pick ups.
The doctor said I had issues, and laughed. But said that why I had the surgery in the first place.

I scream when you read about baseball players out for injuries.

I think I forgot the part of the playoffs where your heart beats 10 times faster and you start shaking-I was spent after that OT game-I needed another hr to settle down before I could sleep. Though our overall sloppy play didnt make the game any easier to watch.

I will say I was surprised that Stoll got suspended-while it was dirty, I guess I just assumed that you still have to go Pronger 2007 to get a suspension.

I really hope Chicago at least tries to work against the Canucks-we don't want Vancouver to be able to cruise through the first round.

IMO Stoll lead with his elbow and drove whites head in the glass compressing his helmet.
There are too many head injuries. Fans want to see their player when they drop the $100 or so for the 2.5 hours of entertainment.
Suspensions don't seem to be deterring such hits.

Its the length and the randomness thats the problem-I have said it here several times and I will say it again-until all plays like this are automatic 5 or 7 games and automatic in person chit chat with Colin, where more games can be added, nothing will change.

I just watched a piece on ESPN Outside the lines-its trickling down into peewee/junior hockey.

Wonder why that is..........

BTW-who didnt see that first Canucks goal coming?

For dirty hits like that, they could possibly increase the penalty. Instead of a 5 minute major, what if they had a 7 minute major? I'm sure you would think twice about drilling someones head into the boards from behind, as you could blow the game and potentially the series with the hit.

And that goal was a beauty.
