whats the over under for Rick Rypien? I think that Gary will throw the book at him-he's a nobody who did something beyond incompetent-it is asking for legal trouble, if the fan goes through with getting legal counsel. I am predicting 10-15 games. Sports leagues have absolutely zero tolerance for this- it puts all parties at risk. Anything less than 10 and he should thank Gary.

I say 10 games, but I can see it going as high as 15.

I think that'll cost the guy around $60,000..... he's making the league minimum, which is $500,000. That'll learn him.

I think he gets 6-8 games. It happened a few years ago, with someone who I just cant seem to get off the tip of my tongue, and that person got 8 games. I dont see much more than that.

My team is the PENS. They seem to be scoring well but seem to be loosing games. BTW I would really like a gamecenter app for my iPhone.... Still waiting..

Pretty good guessing on the Rypien situation. He got a six game suspension, which has five games left since he didnt play the last game.

6 games is a insult-especially since Bettman called the fan and offered tickets and a dinner. Once again, how screwed up our disciplinary system is-players can attack fans and basically get a slap on the wrist-the only way to prevent this is to set president-do this and you sit. 6 games is basically nothing

Should have been at least 10.

As the fan said, if it was a "real world" kind of job, and you attacked a customer, your ass would be fired.

I am not saying Rypien was right for what he did, but there comes a time when players need to protect themselves as well. Im sure most of us have been to games, and me personally, I have witnessed a lot of cruelty from people in the stands. While these people make millions of dollars to play a game, they still are just people, and when fans cross that boundary, and become aggressive, the players need to protect themselves just like any ordinary person would.

I understand that these athletes are people and have real feelings and real emotions. That said, interacting with fans in this way is unacceptable-no matter what-a player's defense is to do nothing.I am not comparing this to the Pacers/Pistons brawl a few years back but ask Ron Artest-getting physically involved with fans is not the brightest idea. I too have see and heard stuff at games from fans-but that is not an excuse.

I may be overreacting but I do not want a NHL version of "The Malice at the Palace"-who knows what will happen the next time a drunk fan decides to get involved with a player.

Anyone know the reason why Ilya Kovalchuk was a healthy scratch for tonight's game?

Only 15 more years to go.........

MacLean, who is winless at home (0-4-1) and 2-5-1 overall, refused to say why Kovalchuk was scratched.

"That's between him and I," MacLean said. "That was my decision."

MacLean plans to decide Sunday whether Kovalchuk, who signed a 15-year contract in the off-season, will play later that night against the Rangers in New York.

"I take responsibility for all the decisions that I make," he said. MacLean noted that Kovalchuk knows why he was scratched.

Kovalchuk wasn't in the locker-room after the game.

I dunno...... MacLean's comments lead me to believe there is more to the story than that.

Seems like a potential issue between the coach and him.

Here's some speculation as to why he was a healthy scratch:

So why was Kovalchuk scratched?

Talking to sources today it may all come back to Devil's hockey. The source I spoke to believes Kovalchuk was scratched because the of the rest of the team, and NOT because of Kovalchuk. That MacLean went to him and basically said, "For years we have worked as a unit here. As a well-oiled machine, and these guys have never had a superstar to bail them out."

Essentially the theory is the Devils have been waiting for Kovalchuk to do something and not taking it on themselves. You know how sometimes a team comes together and plays better when they lose their star player to injury? John MacLean was hoping for that result last night. Like pulling your goalie even if it isn't really your goalie's fault, but just to make a point to the rest of the team. Hoping the team would rally and pick up their play.

John MacLean said continually last night, "Only Kovalchuk and I know why Kovalchuk was scratched."

Ilya is a good team player. Always has been. He has a ton of character. I can completely see MacLean saying to him, "I am going to scratch you to try and get everyone else to stop watching and start doing."

The result wasn't positive last night, and today there are murmurs Kovalchuk could be benched again tonight against the Rangers.

A very interesting read. An interesting strategy by the coach...... hopefully it ends up working in the end.

definitely an interesting idea... i hope it doesn't work though. i hate the devils. jersey trash.

Surely, I think i'm going to the Bruins/Leafs game on thursday. should be a good one. maybe Seguin will get a hat trick ;)

Surely, please dont tell me you think that was a good goal last night, during the Panthers/Leafs game? Clearly it was interference, and its ridiculous that it wasnt called. Leafs look good though. And Im glad to see my Panthers get back to where they belong this year, near the bottom, because we could really use Couturier or Hopkins.
