I browse them every once in a while, but I'm not a member there.
I think you're spot-on with your thoughts on the Panthers. The only way they'll finish close enough to the bottom to get something out of it will be if they start selling off their talent sooner rather than later. Take it from me, there's nothing worse than finishing a few spots out of the playoffs year after year after year after........
World Series? Is that going on right now?
There will never be another like Gretzky.
I think there never will be another Gretz, but there wont be another Crosby, or Ovechkin either. These are just generational players of our time (or my time since I dont know how old you are), just like Gretz was a generational player back in the 80s/90s. Thats what makes the NHL such a great sport, there will always be a surplus of talent because we are a world sport, or at least a two continent sport.
The Panthers are definitely on the right track. They are set in goal for years to come with Markstrom, Salak, and Chevrie. They are also pretty well off on defense with Kulikov, Gudbranson, Robak, Petrovic, Ellerby, and even Wideman. And while they have some good
young vets up front in Weiss and Booth, along with Frolik, Bjugstad, McFarland, Repik, Dadonov, Howden, Hyman, etc. as prospects, they need that top line stud. Couturier would be that player, Hopkins as well. If they were able to add one of those two, we would be in such a good position in the future. Even budgeting ourselves to about $50 million next year, we would have about $26 million to re-sign our UFAs/RFAs, and add some quality pieces via free agency. We will never sign a top tier free agent, but with the talent we have, guys like Backes or Connolly would really be a great addition to the team.
I am totally against tanking, but I have no problem with this team losing more games than they win this year, if it means we get a top 2/3 pick in the draft. Its much more important to us that sneaking into the playoffs, and getting ousted after one round. I dont want us to be like the Thrashers a few years back, where they sold the farm just to get into the playoffs, and havent dont squat since. With the right free agent pickups, and another solid draft from Tallon, in a couple of years, we could be a team that makes the playoffs every season. That is as long as our prospects pan out the way we hope they do.
