I don't think it will actually happen, but UCLA should be a tough one early in the year and I think Tech is going to be a lot better than people think.

That's very true. I'm happy that we have UCLA on the schedule - not that they're world beaters or anything, but it's nice to see some better non-conference scheduling by UT. I guess we recently signed a four year stint with Notre Dame as well, which is good to see.

I'd like to see the terms of that agreement. I remember reading an article a few years back when Notre Dame played Georgia Tech that discussed the terms Notre Dame had to get to agree to the games. The terms were insane. I don't remember exactly, but basically ND made them agree to a 2-1 series (2 at ND, 1 at GT) like some kind of Sun Belt team, they took a bigger than usual share of the gate, and a bunch of other concessions. It just reinforced my hatred of Notre Dame. Sadly, I can't seem to find the article now. I wonder if they tried that with this series.

^^^^ It's a ways away - 2015 in South Bend, 2016 in Austin, then 2019 in Austin, and 2020 in South Bend. I don't know much more than that.

The Irish have been desperate to rekindle their once-strong recruiting ties in Texas, so it doesn't really make sense for them to not play in Austin. On top of that (as the recent conference non-realignment proved), no one dictates terms to the boys in Austin. They are on top of the college football pile right now in every way imaginable.

Also, A&M played a one-for-one series with ND back in 2000 (in South Bend) and 2001 (in College Station).

GO BRONCOS!!

:D

Thanks for the new thread, dmr. Obviously I didn't see this when I posted in the old one. Thanks for pointing it out, steve. :)

I'm so excited for this season!!

I can not WAIT until September 6. It's going to be great game, but I'm confident my Broncos will pull off the apparent "upset".

I'm happy about our #5 ranking, but I don't think for a second that we should have started behind Florida or Texas. Or Ohio State for that matter, but I had already accepted that. I thought we'd be #3 for sure. Oh well, I guess it's just another year of us proving it on the field.

I hope we beat Va. Tech, and then they go on to take the ACC. And I hope Oregon State beats TCU in their opener, because then we have Oregon State as our home opener on September 25. Then we'll cruise through our conference schedule and we'll see how things sit come December.

Best time of the year!!

:D

I'll say this though: if we get Boise State versus Alabama or Ohio State in the BCS Championship Game in early January 2011, we could have a LOT of sleepless nights for Nick Saban or Jim Tressel trying to figure out that very unconventional Boise State offense.

Sucks doesn't it? Actually I was pleasantly surprised how high you were ranked because I thought you were going to get the snubbing of a lifetime. Also, I was shocked to see TCU ranked as high as they were after their miserable Fiesta Bowl performance.

Maybe it's just my Crimson colored glasses, but I feel Utah is ranked too low right now. Our offense should have a great year, and our defense is always fairly solid (though our defense has a few question marks right now). No matter, though, our opener is against Pitt and we can use that as an opportunity to show everyone what we're made of.

I'll tell you, I think the most frightening game on Utah's schedule is our game against Notre Dame in November. Normally, I wouldn't fear the Irish so much, but they have a bye before they play us, it's at Notre Dame, it will be SENIOR DAY for them, AND, to top it all off, we play freaking TCU the week before.

Anyway, I could not be more excited for September 2nd to roll around. Everyone should tune in to watch the Pitt v Utah game that day. It's sure to be a barn burner because both teams have such high expectations this year.

P-Worm

Also, I was shocked to see TCU ranked as high as they were after their miserable Fiesta Bowl performance.

I was really surprised to see that. There is no WAY Boise State would start ranked #7 if we had lost the Fiesta Bowl. We would likely be down around 10 or so. Possibly lower.

I'm not trying to be negative when I say this, but I really don't understand why TCU gets more respect in the media than we do. What have they done that we haven't? I honestly respect TCU and their program, but I really hope Oregon State takes it to 'em. Heh. I doubt it will happen, but a guy can dream!

I'm really curious to see how Utah fares this year. Pitt is going to be a really tough game to open it up, but the first game of the year is always wide open!

I'll say this though: if we get Boise State ... in the BCS Championship Game ...

Obviously I hope we're able to go back to Glendale, and not play in the Fiesta Bowl, but what's good for Boise State isn't good for the non-AQs in this regard.

I think we can all agree that the current BCS system is seriously flawed, but just imagine the firepower ol' BCS lackey Hancock will have if Boise State were to get in to the Championship Game! He would be able to shut up every one of the naysayers that go on about how it's not fair.

So even though I obviously think it would be absolutely incredible for us to make it, I don't think it would be good for the non-AQs.

I was just reading a chat recap with ESPN's Bruce Feldman that was held earlier today, and he says he would have ranked Boise State even lower than 5th.

I just don't get it.

In a poll that's largely based on last year's performance, and with 21 starters returning how can you possibly rank them lower??

What game did you watch? Both teams were miserable offensively in the Fiesta Bowl. Boise won by seven points on a fake punt.

It wasn't a pretty game for either side, but TCU could easily have won that game if Dalton hadn't started throwing INTs left and right. Still, I think it just shows how far Boise has come in the eyes of the pollsters that TCU could lose to them and still start the next season as highly-ranked as they are (though that's not to say that Boise shouldn't be higher, as I mentioned earlier).

Feldman is a shill for the BCS. I wouldn't pay much him mind.

So begins life in college football without Tebow... I for one am happy the annointed one is no longer crying on the sidelines and in interviews, but we will never be rid of him, everything will still be relative to "Tebow this" and "Tebow that" and his shadow will long be cast over the college football scene. The man-crush the media had(s) on him will remain and they will lament his departure for ages. And lest my disdain for Tebow be seen as Dawg poop, the Gators kicked our ass long before Tebow came on the scene and will likely continue to do so... so my digust is towards the media hype more than anything... and even more than a disgust of the person Tebow (who seems to be a relatively nice guy, sans tears). But I digress...

I was happy to see that Texas didn't create a scorched-earth realignment of the conferences by heading to the Pac-1x, but they were rewarded mightily for their "loyalty" to the Big 1x

Hmmm, the doesn't the Big 12 now have 10 and the Big 10 have 12 or something like that?

I think the SEC remains the most competitive and dominant conference on the planet (with insincere apologies to the others), but it should prove to be an interesting season.

Alabama and Florida are the favs of course, but LSU and the Dawgs will have their opportunities, as will Auburn and maybe even Arkansas with Mallet.

USC is the laughing stock of college football with Lame Kiffin and regardless of their talent and pedigree... he has shown that he can make anything suck. The Pac 1x will be wide open and likely be won by a one year wonder team.

Texas will continue to be a force, as will Oklahoma
Ohio State will be hyped and under achieve
Does Michigan still have a team?

The ACC will still try to claim they are relevant, but they aren't
The Big East? This is a football thread, not a basketball thread, right?

The Dawgs will have a freshman QB, but he is good
And one of the best and most experienced offensive lines in the country
The running backs will be solid
And AJ Green is the real deal, if he plays focused

The defense should be a real defense again now that Martinez was fired and Grantham has brought the old fire back

I am hopefully optimistic, but realistic as well
We will struggle, but not as much as the Cocks or the Vols
The Gators are given their due until we prove we can beat them

I hate the Gators

Hopefully last year's season for the Sooners was an anomaly. I can't think of a team that was more snakebitten last year - losing Gresham before the season began, losing Bradford in the first game, and trying to rebuild behind a terribly inexperienced offensive line - it was a wonder the Sooners were even able to remain competitive (their first three losses were by a combined 5 points).

Big questions remain for this year, though - Landry Jones found out last year that it's tough to replace a legend, especially when you have to do it on the fly - will he be able to step up this year? Can DeMarco Murray become a featured back without splitting time with Chris Brown? Can the defense manage to fill the gaps left by vacating seniors (this typically hasn't been a problem under Stoops' tenure)?

The non-conference schedule only has Utah State as a cupcake - Florida State, Air Force, and Cincinatti can all be handfuls. Then the conference schedule starts with Texas - how good will they be without McCoy and Shipley?

Now this is more like it!

ESPN.com Power Rankings

I have to admit though, the more attention Boise State gets the more nervous I get. Thankfully nearly everyone is still counting us out against Va. Tech, so there's still a chip on our shoulder. :)

USC at 15 is ranked too low. We won't go to a bowl of course, but we still have 5 star athletes and the best defensive coach in the business. I expect a top 5-8 finish.

My Top 10:

  1. Alabama
  2. Boise State
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Virginia Tech
  5. Nebraska
  6. Florida
  7. Nebraska
  8. THE University of TEXAS
  9. Ohio State
  10. TCU

Fixed that for you. ;)

I don't disagree with your list, although I'm pretty sure NU won't hold both the 5 and 7 spots.

I'm very interested to see how USC responds to the drama from the off-season.

New coach, lots of offseason issues, more than a few questions following a sub-par (for USC) season last year, and only about half the starters returning. A #15 ranking to start the season might be too high.

I'll give you partial credit (check out the header on the Texas-Austin website).

Oops, fixed it. There's an Aggie joke in there somewhere, I'm sure.

All our players are top-notch athletes. Our non-starters are more talented/higher-ranked prospects than teams in the top 15. Sure, we lost some players, but our new starters are incredible. Besides, they were all holdovers from the Pete Carrol era, it's not like the situation has affected their abilities.

Does Michigan still have a team?
Hey now!

Get your laughs in now, I'm (extremely) cautiously optimistic for this year, but next year... look out. I can't hate on you too much though MacDawg, we have your boy Stafford up here on the Lions. He really impressed me last year, but we need to see him make some strides this year... we've been burned before by phenom-QBs who look like they could be something one year and fail to take the necessary steps next year (ahem, Harrington).

Back to Michigan, I think they get 8 wins this year (9, if you include a bowl game win). I think RichRod finally has his kinds of players on the offensive side... and having to pick between Denard and Tate is a luxury we didn't have in 2008 (ugh, Threet/Sheridan). The defense is what I think carries them to 8-9 wins or pulls them down to 6-7 wins... we lost one of the greatest defenders in Michigan history (Brandon Graham), but have some young pieces like Craig Roh and Will Campbell. If they can get some consistent production out of the LB corps, and the secondary just holds it together long enough for the DL to wreak havoc... they could be good. Or, they could be really bad.

What it comes down to is will RichRod be given enough time to turn Michigan around? I think if he wins 7 games in the regular season and does well in the bowl game, he's back. I think that's the floor. Anything below that, I think the pressure on the new AD to bring in someone like Harbaugh (he's burned some bridges at U of M though, personally, I like that he runs his mouth... but to attack your alma mater AFTER Bo Schembechler died, that was pretty low) might get too high to ignore.

I think Michigan ends the season ranked in the Top 25. Still not up to previous expectations, but progress nonetheless.

EDIT: Les Miles is a non-starter. He is persona non grata up here for what he did to that kid this summer.

Go UT!

So, just in case you didn't get that, it's bright before burnt, dogs before cows, and Rocky Top before Texas Fight. Thank goodness the initials are still the same so I can tell locals I'm a UT fan without any trouble. What they don't know won't hurt them. ;)
