All our players are top-notch athletes. Our non-starters are more talented/higher-ranked prospects than teams in the top 15.

I've never seen fans of a school more concerned about recruiting rankings than USC. I'm sure you said that your athletes were better than anyone else's last year too. I'm also sure you didn't finish in the Top-15 that year either. ;)

I just can't imagine that Kiffen is a good enough replacement for Carol to warrant the perennial high pre season ranking for USC that badandy is looking for.

Sometimes it doesn't pan out the way you think. One thing is for sure though: more talented players will beat less talented players most of the time.

If we keep getting recruits like we did, which I think we can do with the return of Orgeron, I think we deserve the perennially high ranking. 15, however, is not that high. Monte Kiffin will be great as well.

True, but inexperienced players often make "rookie" mistakes. When you have a bunch of those types of players, lots of bad things can happen.

My new home and adopted team.

Don't forget about a sub-par coach.

You mean the guy that's going to have the Trojans in NCAA prison for the next 20 years? Seriously, I still can't believe USC hired Kiffin with the NCAA cops sniffing around the program. I'm convinced that's why the punishment was so harsh when OU did the same thing and got a (later-rescinded) slap on the wrist.

USC is still USC. I don't think they're going to take a huge hit in recruiting. They will suffer due to the sanctions, but kids are still going to want to go down to Southern California and play football.

But I'm with Tomorrow, I'm not sold on the coaching. A lot of the assistants have great resumes, but that doesn't mean they're going to be able to thrive under a potentially flawed leader.

USC was bad for a long time before Carroll showed up. It could happen again.

Texas just gets my courtesy I live here now so I'll support you fandom. My heart truly belongs to the Tennessee Vols.

Don't be that guy. There are enough of them already.

I'm not following Ignatius what part of my situation makes me "that guy"? Being a Vol fan, being a transplanted fan, being a fan of the local team just because I live there now, or just being a Texas fan in general.

Being a fan of the Longhorns just because they are good. It looks like you live in Dallas, so it's not like UT is the only show in town. Unlike it Tennessee, there are many, many D-I college football teams to choose from in Texas (and the immediate vicinity), and many of them are just as (or more) easily accessible to Dallas.

  • SMU is in the neighborhood
  • UNT is 30 minutes north
  • TCU is 45 minutes west
  • Baylor is one hour south
  • Austin in three hours south
  • Texas A&M is three hours south
  • Oklahoma is three hours north
  • Oklahoma St. is four and a half hours north
  • Houston is four and a half hours south
  • Arkansas is five and a half hours northeast
  • Texas Tech is six hours west

So if you want to root for the Whorns because they are good, have at it. But don't pretend that you are just doing it because it's convenient.

Wow, quite the assumption there sir. I assure you I'm no bandwagon fan. My loyalties squarely lie with the Vols. My casual, don't skip that word because it's important, support for the Longhorns is simply because they are the local team. It's just like I cheer for the Rangers in MLB, the Mavericks in NBA and the Cowboys in NFL (of course second to the Titans). I understand your point about there being a variety of "local" options and I do also cheer for teams like TCU, A&M, and Tech. Sorry, but I don't really follow UNT or SMU although I hav no problem wishing them well. I think it's important for a sports fan to be a general fan of the teams in his/her community. However, don't mistake this general I hope they have a good year support as the die hard bandwagon fandom stereotype with which you seem to be classifying me. In good fun I often tell friends and people I know that I'm a "true UT fan" and that means I bleed BRIGHT orange, not that muddy dirty version of the color. ;)

See that's the problem: the Longhorns are most assuredly NOT the local team any more than the Spurs are the local NBA team.

Ah well, I tried to explain it. You say po-ta-to, I say po-tat-o. I'm sorry my casual support of a college team upsets you so. But hey, that's what sports are all about, the irrational crazy fan seeking out any and every way to tell another fan he/she is wrong.

Now hold on to your seat...

I cheer for the Spurs too.

Now this is more like it!

ESPN.com Power Rankings

I have to admit though, the more attention Boise State gets the more nervous I get. Thankfully nearly everyone is still counting us out against Va. Tech, so there's still a chip on our shoulder. :)

Why oh why is Ohio ranked so damn high. Ugghhhhhhhh. Sorry this is coming from a "Big Blue" fan lol...

Lets hope my Tide can Roll again!!!!!!!!

It doesn't upset me, it just makes me sad. You can cheer for whomever you want, I just find it humorous (and a little irritating/insulting) that you choose to rationalize it by saying that you are rooting for the "local" team when it's clear that they are not local. You are a front-runner and that's fine. Good luck with it.

As for the NBA, I could not care less.

*Underline mine*

You sure do throw out accusations and labels in what I thought was a good natured and friendly conversation. :(

Oh, and let's clear up one thing, being irritated/insluted falls under the category of being upset. But hey, it's all good. I'll try and explain this one more time so as to clear up any further confusion. In other words, I'll give you deeper insight into the scary way in which my brain works.

To me the recognized state college is "local" to the entire state when it comes to collegiate sports. In Tennessee the "home town" favorite college football team is the Vols and I grew up a fan despite living in Nashville where the obvious geographical local team was Vanderbilt. People would drive all the way across the state from Memphis to go to games in Knoxville and no one bashed them for not being a fan of Memphis State. Maybe this is just a Southern thing, but that's how it was for almost everyone I knew growing up. People from all over Kentucky cheer for UofK, people from all over Alabama cheer for UofA, people from all over Georgia cheer for UofG, etc. etc.. Sure there are other options, but they are not generally recognized as "the state school" and usually had a somewhat smaller fan base.

So, for this reason the University of Texas for me is thought of as the state wide "local" college even though, as you have correctly pointed out, there are many other options to which I'm geographically closer. I'm sure I'm not the only one who understands what I'm saying or even thinks this way. If anyone else would like to back me up that would be great, or hey, I may be in this boat all by myself.

I have a team I cheer passionately for above all others (the Vols). Outside of that I enjoy rooting for local teams as a way to support my community. As I mentioned in my previous posts this includes multiple teams. It's kind of an "us vs. them" mentality. When it does come down to two of the local teams playing (Texas vs. Tech or Tech vs. A&M) I really don't care that much and will make my pick based on what is on the line (bowl bid, perferct season, etc.) or just simply root for a good game.

I hope this clears things up to the point that my view of collegiate sports can cease to be a source of irritation for you. I feel terrible that I've caused you such consternation. If this doesn't suffice, well, I know a good therapist you could talk to because you shouldn't have to live that way. ;)

Hey...sorry! I thought we established last year that these football threads were for smack talk! I'm just having fun with this (and I'm not really upset, just a little fired up).

Texas isn't quite like Tennessee (or those other smallish states in the South). We have 25 million people (roughly four times as many as TN) and two flagship universities/university systems. UT-Austin is neither the older of the two nor is it the "recognized state college" as you put it, but they do have the best football team, which is why you root for them. You can rationalize it however you want, but if they were terrible you wouldn't even bother paying attention to them (just ask dmr727 how many so-called t-shirt fans UT had back when he was going to school in Austin).

Let's look at it another way. If you lived in San Francisco, would you call USC (or UCLA, if you are obligated to root for state universities) the "local" team? Or is the Univ. of Florida the "local" team in Miami?

I think another thing we see here is that UT-Austin has a HUGE student population; there just isn't a lot of support for TCU, UNT, or SMU around here, largely because I don't think the three of them together have the number of students Austin does. A&M also has an enormous population, and a huge following as well.

My wife (a former UT student) was surprised, when she moved to the DFW area, how many Sooner fans and graduates are around here. OU is FULL of people from Texas, they go to school in Norman then they move back to Texas to work.

I'm expecting another championship for my Yellow Jackets in the Almost Competitive Conference......

Absolutely, which is another reason why I wish the "immigrants" from other states would support the local schools. I'm no fan of SMU, but they actually look like they might have something building over there with June Jones & Co. Same thing with TCU. They just had their best season in 50+ years and they rarely fill up their stadium because a) they have a small student body and alumni base and b) the folks who come to town would rather sit in the bar than go to Amon Carter to see a top ten team live.

I bet your wife LOVES have so many Sooners around, not to mention Techies (Fort Worth, at least, is full of those, too).
