In other news... here is a list of this year's salaries for assistants in the SEC

SEC's highest paid assistants

The Mississippi Black Bears may want they money back. Their total defense was ranked #80 in the country and #108 in scoring defense. And they decided to keep him around another year. That makes me happy.

One thing that stands out to me is that of the SEC assistants listed, only one of them is an offensive coordinator. The rest are all defense. That's why you don't see stuff like Oregon's offense in the SEC.

As far as Dooley, maybe UT is hoping that between his dad and Nick Saban, he learned a few things about coaching.

Tonight's the big night for my Utes taking on the Boise State Broncos. I hope the Utes make a game of it, but I have a feeling the longest active bowl streak is put to sleep tonight.

A shame evilgEEk isn't around. Would have liked to get some talk going on. Maybe he'll be back after they win tonight.

Did we ever find out what happened to evilgeek?

I am looking forward to this game also!!!!!! I am hoping it is a good game and not a blow out either way.

It looks like the Aggies may have caught a break in the Cotton Bowl. ESPN is reporting that LSU RB Stevan Ridley may be ineligible for the Cotton Bowl. He is very good and this would be a huge blow to LSU's already anemic offense.

Update: ESPN SEC reporter Chris Low is saying he is ineligible, unless LSU wins an appeal with the NCAA.

At this point, I don't know how the NCAA can declare anyone ineligible with a straight face

Oh, it's easy. Ridley isn't the star player on the #1 ranked team playing in the biggest game of the year. Plus, they said this was an academic issue, not a "father trying to pimp out his son" issue.

And the coaching carousel continues: Word is that Temple has hired Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio for their head coaching job.

Yeah I saw that! It would Be nice, but given our usual luck, he'll almost certainly win his appeal. Either way, I think we match up pretty well with LSU and our D has been playing very well lately. As long as the layoff doesn't hurt us too much (and it usually hurts offenses more, anyway), I like our chances in this one. Should be a tough, low scoring game though.

Haha. So true.

You don't understand the situation very well. Those idiots are involved in everything. Same thing at A&M.

Hell no! This is the best season I've gotten to experience in more than a decade, so I'm going to savor the **** out of it. Plus, TCU (my grad school alma mater as of 1:00 tomorrow) is going to the Rose Bowl!

Oh, and A&M is ranked in hoops, too. I'm loving it.

I got a masters from Madison, so our grad alma maters will be battling it out

my bachelors and doctorate are both from schools with too much academics and not enough football :p

Wow, that game last night was sloppy. 7 turnovers between the two teams. Boise's defense really bailed them out on a few occasions.

In other bowl news, the Poinsetta Bowl may become a water polo match, since Qualcomm Stadium is currently flooded. Check out this story with some video on the stadium.

Slogging through the mud,
In a flooded stadium...

Interesting, you can pimp out your wares for $$$ but you better not get a tattoo ;)

Reports: OSU players traded for tattoos

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State is investigating allegations that several football players traded autographs for tattoos, according to multiple reports.

WBNS-TV and The Columbus Dispatch, both citing unidentified sources, reported on their websites Wednesday night that the school was looking into the possible NCAA violations just two weeks before the Buckeyes face Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4.

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor, not mentioned in either report, quickly responded on Twitter.

"I paid for my tattoos. GoBucks" he posted.

The Associated Press left telephone, text and e-mail messages seeking comment from coach Jim Tressel, athletic director Gene Smith, the school's compliance director and other university officials.

Asked by the AP to respond to the allegations, Ohio State associate athletic director Dan Wallenberg said in an e-mail, "No information to share."

Team spokeswoman Shelly Poe said after Tuesday's practice that each player was eligible for the bowl. She said she was unaware of any NCAA investigation.

The Buckeyes have several days off before reporting back to campus on Sunday night. They practice Monday and Tuesday before flying to New Orleans for the BCS bowl game on Dec. 29.

OK, enough with the corporate sponsorship
The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl? You gotta be kiddin' me!
The Beef O'Brady Bowl??

I am old enough to remember when it was a big deal to get invited to a bowl
It was all on New Year's Day and it was the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Cotton Bowls
No other bowls really mattered

"The Rose Bowl Presented by Vizio"??
Even the Granddaddy of the all has sold out

I understand it is all about $$$
And that bowl teams get extra practice
But this is like giving everybody in Little League a participation trophy

Anybody else "old school" like me when it comes to the bowls?

Hey guys, it's been a while, eh?

My apologies for my absence, but life got pretty crazy after that devastating loss to Nevada. I had about a five-day mourning period, but then that following weekend my five month old daughter was in the hospital for six days with an infection. I was so consumed with it that my internet usage basically went down to 0.

But the good news is that my baby girl is all better!! The anti-biotics finally took charge and cleared out all the infections and she's back to being her happy self again! :D

It's funny how those kinds of things put life in to perspective, especially college football. Heh.

I'm sorry that I missed out on the smack-talk with all the Utes fans here. ;) That first quarter was UGLY for my Broncos. After that we had some great drives, some of which ended with more turnovers or blocked kicks. The score could have easily been 40+ if not for our drops in the endzone. I attribute that to rust. Our offense is rarely out of sync like that. I was scared in that first quarter. The only other time this year that I've seen our offense like that was the second half at Nevada. **shudder**

It may not have been a Rose Bowl, but it was still a great way to end another fantastic season. And hopefully it will help us secure our first-ever back-to-back top-10 finish. :)

And in other news, I'll be going under the knife in five hours' time. I'm having ankle surgery at 3pm MST. About a third of my left ankle bone has deteriorated, along with the cartilage, so I had to wait for a "fresh donor" to have the surgery. Basically I had to wait for someone 18-40 to die so I could have their ankle. They have to break part of my leg bone just to get to my ankle bone, then rebuild my ankle bone and stuff some cartilage in there, then drill two holes up my leg bone to make it bleed down in to the new bone so my own cells take over, and then screw my leg bone back together.

Ouch.

I'll have a boot on for three months, but hopefully after all of that I'll finally be able to walk again without tremendous pain! ...hopefully.. ;)

I have to go get all my crutches and drugs now though, so I won't be back on for at least a day or so. But I'm gonna be bed-ridden for probably close to a week, so I expect I'll be back on...a lot... ;)

Good to be back! :D

^^^^
HOLY COW WELCOME BACK

Glad things are better with your little girl
And our thoughts and prayers are with you as you have surgery yourself

We can talk smack later... just take care of yourself and family
And THANKS for checking in!!

Thank you! It really does mean a lot. :)

I can't believe I have THIRTY pages to catch up on!! Heh.

...and I guess I should change my signature ;)

Hey, welcome back EG! Glad to hear everything is ok, but that surgery sounds painful! Ouch is right!

It looks like some Ohio State players did more than get tattoos. Five OSU players, including Terrelle Pryor, have been suspended for for the first five games of the 2011 season for "Accepting improper benefits". They were basically selling stuff like championship rings. I found it interesting they weren't suspended for the bowl game because "they did not receive adequate rules education during the time period the violations occurred".

What another load of BS from the NCAA
The rules education was enough to suspend them for regular games but not important games?
Their "not knowing" is about as believable as Newton not knowing

Pryor will likely just skip to the NFL
Why should he hang around for half a season?

Why their suspension doesnt go into effect immediately is absurd, but I guess the NCAA likes the TV ratings

pathetic and makes the NCAA a joke of an institution

Yeah, the NCAA is about as effective at enforcing rules as the Chicago PD during Prohibition. It's my understanding that athletes get lectures, classes, and booklets on the rules. They knew it was against the rules.

Even though he has said he is coming back, I think Pryor goes pro after all this.

Welcome back EG!! The BCS-buster crowd has missed your input. ;)
Good luck on the surgery too!

Sucks to be OSU right now eh? I agree with duke; suspension should account for the current season as in Bowl game.

Good to have you back, evilgEEk, but most importantly - glad your daughter is okay.

The whole Ohio State / Cam Newton BS is indefensible on any level

Which is one reason why USC must be giddy about their appeal hearing
NCAA hearing for USC set for Jan. 22

It is a shame that while the NCAA got the Bush incident right after dragging out a a four year investigation, they will unravel everything by botching the Cam Newton and Ohio State offenses. Of course the sanctions on USC didn't jeopardize the "game of the century" Rose Bowl against Texas

Pat Forde's column on ESPN is right on "the money"
It is long but worth the read

NCAA ruling defies common sense

You thought this was Bowl Month?

Guess again.

It's We Didn't Know Month.

From Cam Newton to the memorabilia peddlers in Ohio, that's the operative phrase allowing them to continue playing in what has been a deeply tainted 2010 college football season.

We didn't know.

Newton, the Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, said he didn't know that his father attempted to sell Cam's services to Mississippi State for $180,000. That plausible (or implausible, if you prefer) deniability has kept Newton on the field as the Tigers have marched into the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game.

Thursday at Ohio State, we learned that five players -- many of them stars -- didn't know it was a no-no to sell championship rings, game gear and personal awards for cash. Why didn't they know? According to the NCAA release, the players "did not receive adequate rules education" from the school at the time of the transgressions, which occurred in 2009. That plausible (or implausible, if you prefer) deniability will allow all five to play in the Buckeyes' Allstate Sugar Bowl showdown with Arkansas on Jan. 4.

So there you have it, future NCAA rules breakers of America (and your parents). Go for the gold. When you get caught, shrug and say, "Why, I had no idea." Blame it on your dad and/or a negligent compliance staff at your university.

The NCAA dropped the hammer on the Buckeyes -- quarterback Terrelle Pryor, running back Daniel "Boom" Herron, receiver DeVier Posey, offensive tackle Mike Adams and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas -- for 2011. They're all suspended for the first five games next year.

But the hammer only hurts if there's someone there to feel it hit. We'll see how many of the five salesmen are still Buckeyes by next season. I'll set the over/under at 1.

Most of these guys will hightail it to the NFL -- but not until after getting to play in a high-profile BCS bowl.
If that strikes you as nonsensical, well, get in line. That line currently stretches from Fayetteville, Ark., to Saigon. And back.

The NCAA has done it again, producing a ruling that defies common sense and provokes suspicions about ulterior motives. Even as the organization has taken admirable steps in terms of aggressive enforcement and attempted transparency, it still has a unique ability to leave the public baffled and skeptical.

The Newton ruling was widely ridiculed for the loophole that allowed the quarterback to play in the SEC and BCS title games -- two of the most important games of the year in terms of revenues and ratings. In the open-and-shut Ohio State case, the NCAA is delaying punishment long enough for the Buckeyes to play in another game that packs a huge revenues-and-ratings payload.

The We Didn't Know defense was cited by the NCAA as one mitigating factor in this decision. Another was the fact that postseason play provides a "unique opportunity" and is "evaluated differently" when it comes to suspensions, according to an NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement policy that was enacted in 2004.

Well, sure. It's a unique opportunity to get a new jersey that could be worth a lot of money on the memorabilia market. If Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green can get a grand (and a four-game NCAA suspension) for selling his Independence Bowl jersey, imagine what Pryor can get for one from a big-time bowl such as the Sugar Bowl?

Commerce aside, deferring punishment until after the biggest game of the season doesn't seem like the greatest deterrent to future rule breaking. Especially in this instance, when the rule breakers have the option to go pro instead of ever paying the piper.

Seems to me that if these guys were busted for breaking the rules, the punishment should be rendered in a timely fashion. Like now. No matter how inconvenient it might be, or how "unique" an "opportunity" it is to play in a bowl.

That's another thing that makes this ruling something of a joke. Rhapsodizing about the "unique opportunity" of playing in a bowl game would seem to be completely lost on the Buckeyes in question.

If they had a full appreciation of what it means to play for Ohio State, and to play in a bowl, and to be part of a tradition much larger than themselves, they wouldn't have sold what they sold. The championship rings would mean too much. So would the gold pants, which are small jewelry awards given to every Buckeye for beating Michigan.

I've seen Ohio State players wearing their gold pants proudly on necklaces. I've heard them talk about what those trinkets mean.

To Pryor and Thomas, they meant one thing: cash on the flash.

I understand that some, most or maybe all of the players involved come from economically challenged families. And poverty will make people do things they would refrain from under better circumstances. And it can be much harder as a young adult to appreciate the emotional value of rings and trinkets than it is at an older age.

But a full scholarship and all the perks that come with being a football star at Ohio State are no small advantages on a college campus. I'm fairly certain there are others in Columbus making do with far less.

The bottom line is this: These players slapped Ohio State tradition in the face, for a profit.

I'd imagine a large segment of the Buckeyes fan base is insulted by their actions. Some of them probably would rather not see them play against Arkansas. Jim Tressel has the opportunity to display the guts and integrity the NCAA didn't show by sitting the players on his own.

But he was given an out -- a handy, trendy out.

They didn't know.

It's the phrase of the month in this scandal-scarred season.

I can't really say it any better than Pat Forde. Just mind-numbingly ridiculous. Pathetic.

When I heard that they were all still cleared to play in the Sugar Bowl I just couldn't believe it.

Another black eye on a sport that I love so dearly. A sport that is being taken over by money whores.

.....well, the surgery was a success. I now have a rebuilt ankle thanks to a donor out of Miami. Lord, I sure hope he wasn't a 'Canes fan!
