You do realize that Holgorsen is wholly untested as a head coach, don't you? Just because he ran successful offenses at Oklahoma State and Houston (which, by the way, both have head coaches with offensive mentalities and a penchant for calling their own plays) doesn't mean he'll be successful as the head guy.

And anyway, why name a head coach in waiting at this point? I think WVU should either get rid of Stewart now and hire Holgorsen, or wait until after the bowls and rehire RichRod. Word is he'll be available.

ESPN seems to agree with you. So do I. Look, if you want to fire the guy, fire him. Don't drag it out. I personally feel WVU fans just got spoiled by Rich Rod. Not every coach is going to win 10 games and win the conference every year. Heck, in his first three years, Rich Rodriguez only went 20-17. That stretch he had from 2005-2007 was very special and hard to duplicate. And Pat White and Steve Slaton had a lot to do with that run. You don't find players like that every year.

There are coaches who earn their reputations on the backs of players
Meyer - Smith / Tebow
Chizik/Malzahn - Newton
Rich Rod - Slayton and White

And there are coaches who can coach and get the most from their players
Saban - look at his tree of assistants now: Mushchamp, Smart, Dooley, et. al.
Stoops
Bowden
Paterno

And there are coaches who are insane
Les Miles :p

Yeah, Saban is turning into the next Bear Bryant with his coaching tree. Jimbo Fisher, Will Muschamp, and Derek Dooley were all assistants for him at LSU. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was also a Saban assistant coach when he was at Michigan State. Assistants often make the man (head coach). I saw an article yesterday showing how much Meyer's offense dropped in 2009 after Mullen left even though Tebow was still there. Their defense also went way down after Charlie Strong left. Yeah, they lost a lot of talent, but still.

Oh yeah, check out this story. Mark Cuban has offered to help fund a college football playoff.

Mark Cuban is a Ringling Brothers circus clown. He will do anything to keep in front of the media and try to be relevant. If it brings publicity and the spotlight on him, he will do it. He is the sports equivalent of Jesse Jackson.

And who does West Virginia think they are?

Bill Stewart is being slowly forced out as West Virginia's football coach because athletic director Oliver Luck believes the Mountaineers had become an also-ran instead of a national power.

I am no fan of Mark Cuban's, but if he can get a playoff to happen I will take back all the things I've said about him (which were worse than calling him a clown).

Yep. Another case of deluded fans. And a deluded AD.

Bill Stewart is a lot nicer than I am. I would have been tempted to just say "You want him as coach? Fine, he's your head coach NOW, not next year. Bye" I mean, seriously, you want to bring in my replacement and have me train and work with him for a year? I don't think so, scooter. Plus, he will be making almost as much ($800k) as a coordinator as Stewart is as head coach ($900k).

I would either quit or start doing stuff like anti-recruiting. You know, go visit a recruit and start telling him how much the school sucks. Totally ruin this year's recruiting class.

Stewart probably feels an obligation to his players not to act like an ass, no matter how upset he is about the situation. Also, the Holgorsen situation apparently didn't quite happen how it's been perceived by everyone.

the pursuit of Holgorsen, who was named the Mountaineers' head coach in waiting Wednesday, had been in the works in an official capacity for more than a month and Stewart knew exactly what was going on.

On Dec. 9, Stewart took a trip to Houston and, with Luck, met with Holgorsen at a hotel there to talk about the transition.

That's not to say the Stewart hasn't been treated shabbily, but he doesn't appear to be quite the victim he did at first.

For the small amount of time, Urbans coaching tree isn't to shabby

Dan Mullen - Miss State
Charlie Strong - Louisville
Dan McCarney - North Texas
Doc Holliday - Marshall
Kyle Wittingham - Utah
Mike Sanford - UNLV
Tim Beckman - Toledo
Greg Brandon - Bowling Green
Greg Mattison - DC Baltimore Ravens

I just saw this on ESPN.

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany says the Big Ten may reconsider changing the division names.

I love this quote:
"I think we have enough experience with names, and expansion and development of divisions, to know that you never, rarely, get 90 percent approval rating," Delany said during the interview. "But to get a 90 percent non-approval rating was, you know, really surprising."

Gee, maybe you got 90% non-approval ratings because those names are incredibly lame? Just a guess.

How totally Big 10ish

Did they get any feedback on the names before announcing them??

So, if they change them, is it:

1. Good for them, they had the guts to admit they were wrong and get it right!
2. How gutless to make a decision and then weeny out on it

The decision was terrible, so I'd have to vote #1.

How about:

3. They are morons regardless :D

I still vote People and Critters... it would be a huge hit!

Looks like our buddy at West Virginia isn't the only one...

Sources: Ralph Friedgen buyout on tap?

Maryland is strongly considering asking coach Ralph Friedgen to retire and accept a buyout, according to multiple sources.

Ralph Friedgen's position at Maryland is in question after James Franklin was named Vanderbilt coach. Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said Friday he would not address whether Friedgen was guaranteed to return in 2011. Anderson was addressing reporters on the departure of James Franklin, who took the head coaching job at Vanderbilt Commodores on Friday.

At one point during this season, Maryland told Friedgen he could return next season, but the coach has been pushing for a contract extension.

Franklin had been Maryland's coach in waiting. At least three Maryland assistant coaches are aware of the likelihood Friedgen will not return for next season and have committed to follow Franklin to Vanderbilt.

Sources said that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach would be the leading candidate to replace Friedgen if he is forced into retirement, with former Washington coach Tyrone Willingham and current New Mexico coach Mike Locksley also candidates for the job.

Hmm...maybe I should take out an intellectual property patent on that name. :D

Mike Locksley? The same coach who is 2-22? Yeah, I realize it's New Mexico, but still. One other thing: Notice the article said former Washington coach Tyrone Willingham? Hmm, I could have sworn he coached somewhere else after he left Washington.

Its the most wonderful time of the year...
Anybody watching tomorrow??

And what's up with the Texas Coordinator situation?

Texas regents debate coach candidates

When asked why the regents would want to get involved in who Brown hires for assistant coaches, board spokesman Anthony de Bruyn said "it's their prerogative."

I'm doing the Christmas thing with part of the family tomorrow. Hopefully, I can slip away and watch. Yeah, they aren't the best games, but it's better than no football.

I hope the idiots at Texas don't interfere with the hiring process. I think Mack Brown has earned the right to hire who he wants.

The article seems to imply they are involved because of the money that will be involved... more than normal... coming on the heels of Malzahn's ludicrous contract

i think the big ten divisions names are idiotic. legends and leaders?! what kind of sense does that make? as in the ones in the leaders division are better than the others since they lead? i would have chosen 'great lakes' and 'plains' as names. and the logo is a train wreck.

what will the big 12 be named now? i say southwest conference.

also, there are too many bowl games. i heard somewhere that half of them lose money. if it were up to me, 10-15 bowls will be gone by tomorrow, esp. the dinky ones. and bowl season will not go halfway through january. although i would rather have a playoff (with bowls supplementing).

Things could be getting interesting for Auburn. Check out this article concerning an Auburn lobbying firm and an Auburn defense attorney.

Basically, a guy named Robert Geddie runs a political lobbyist firm which is contracted by Auburn to do their political lobbying. He got arrested in October after an FBI investigation into political corruption in the state. How is this related to Auburn athletics? His firm's contract is paid by a group called Tigers Unlimited, which is the main fundraiser for Auburn athletics. He also recently fired his attorney and hired an attorney who has represented Auburn in NCAA cases since 1991.

I am sure Cam knew nothing about any of it ;)

Anybody else ready to flush 2010 down the toilet and start next year?

The Dawgs have a favorable schedule
And a QB with a year under his belt

They get Ole Miss and Mississippi State from the West
No LSU, no Alabama, no Arkansas
*They get Auburn every year

They have South Carolina and Auburn at home

They have an open date before the Gators

The Gators have:
Alabama and Florida State at home
South Carolina, LSU and Auburn on the road
