Oh dear oh dear, slowly yet somewhat surely, Chelsea's season seems to be crumbling.

Someone needs to ask Torres how he feels his move to win trophies is going so far, haha (although he was cup-tied anyway). Depending on their result against Man Utd now, winning the CL outright may be the only way Torres will even be playing in the Champions League next season.

_______

Man Utd showing absolutely no respect to Crawley by fielding an entire reserve team. I suppose Rooney's on the bench just in case it turns out to be a big blunder. I wonder if the FA will fine United the same as they did Blackpool.

What an annoying draw. United vs Leyton/Arsenal. Why do we keep getting away fixtures and/or playing big teams early

Edit: Thats assuming these squad/reserve players that Wenger has fielded today can even get past Leyton.

Edit: ...and they couldn't.

Well, all credit to Crawley. There's probably a few teams in the PL that would have been happy to come away from Old Trafford with a 1-0 defeat. I'd have taken a 1-0 defeat against Birmingham:(

Not panicing yet, defeat to Celtic yesterday was expected, although the scoreline (3-0) and the way we payed (v.tired) wasn't. 8 points behind with two games in hand. El Hadji Diouf is behaving himself very well despite being the target of every kind of abuse.

The most surprising result at the weekend was Aberdeen putting 5 past Kilmarnock. In any other year that would be expected but Aberdeen are in the relegation zone and Killie are 4th.

Wrexham had a bad day losing to Gateshead, 2 - 7 (SEVEN); Gateshead aren't bottom, but not bad for an away game.

Crawley Town - I'll take the chant from Saturday afternoon wrestling on World of Sport, "Easy, easy, easy..."

Ticket prices:

1978 Charity Shield, GBP 3, 1983 Milk Cup Final, GBP 16, 1983 FA Cup Final Replay, GBP 13 (Final probably around GBP 20), 1984 Rugby League Challenge Cup, GBP 12

Using - http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/education/inflation/calculator/flash/index.htm

Gives around; GBP 13.5, GBP 42, GBP 34, and GBP 30

UEFA and FIFA clearly have supporters' interests at heart, just look at the World Cup being free-to-air in the UK.

Cheers,
OW

The FA needs to come up with a way to punish bad ownership without simply punishing the team. In almost all cases, it's not the manager and bootroom staff, the players or the fans who are to blame, but the owners.

I suppose the real solution is going to be prevention. The FA needs to really implent a fit and proper persons test that actually does what it says, and to really examine new owners' business plans to ensure that what they are proposing to do with the club is based on a sound financial footing.

At the moment the league really doesn't pay attention to what is going on at clubs until the situation becomes dire, at which point they swoop in and dock points/enact transfer bans etc.

Not holding my breath.

Meanwhile, news of a more pleasant nature courtesy of Fuzzy's boys – rangers have confirmed that Ally McCoist will take over the club's managerial duties when Walter Smith steps down at the end of the campaign.

Of course, McCoist is a very sensible choice – he has a vast wealth of experience in leading teams to glory from his days as team captain on banter-filled sports quiz A Question of Sport. :)

To quote myself
Also of interest was Sir Alex Ferguson sitting in the stand next to Walter Smith and Ian Durrant. Ally McCoist seems to run the dug-out these days, in case there was any doubt who will take over from Smith.

And also here (albeit in 2009, a year out!)

Unfortunately he isn't the cheeky chappie any more, he was his usual QoS character for his first six months, wisecracking in the interviews then it would appear somebody sat him down and told him to behave if he wanted the top job so now he adopts the Ferguson chewing a wasp demeanor on the touchline and the standard football manager cliches in the post match interviews (very proud.)

Good day for Chelsea, they are all but set to qualify for the next round in the Champions League, Torres is improving, and Tottenham lost today so they are now 2pts behind them with Spurs having played a game more.

I just read that's the first time Ormerod has scored for years, and it means he's scored for Blackpool in all four divisions now. I can't remember clearly, but wasn't such a feat a topic of discussion here not long ago?

Blackpool really is one of those teams whose position on the table belies their ability to knock off any team on the day. Spurs really blew that slight advantage they had points-wise. Now it'll be three teams scrabbling for two spots with just one point between each - a tense end to the season for the respective fans, which club will miss out!

Because February is only 28 days, the Chelsea v Man Utd match on March 1 technically falls within a Lunar cycle period of the Manager of the Month award so Chelsea should win that one. Or else Wigan will beat Utd at home this Saturday. Fergie has to lose another one this month, the jinx demands it. ;)

Spurs still have a good shot at fourth place, I'm surprised they lost that heavilty to Blackpool though.

Chelsea got an easy draw this time around; I don't think they or Man Utd are good enough to win this competition. Still, a win is a win. Anelka is Chelsea's best striker at the moment. Two second leg matches in Spain to look forward to, both are tight in terms of scoreline. Real Madrid once again failed to beat Lyon, though they got an away goal. I expect to see both Real and Barcelona win at home and progress.

Columbus play Real Salt Lake in the (CONCACAF) Champions League tonight. The draw was kind to MLS - all four remaining Mexican sides landed on one side of the draw, while the two remaining MLS sides landed on the other (facing each other) with one Honduran and one Costa Rican side. The result is, that only only one Mexican club can reach the final, and in order to see an MLS team in the final either Columbus or Salt Lake have to beat the other plus either Saprissa (Costa Rica) or Olimpia (Honduras) - all decent clubs, but less of a challenge than facing one of the big Mexican sides.

As for poor Columbus, we are doomed. The "rebuilding" has left us with a scratch side. Without counting all the players lost in the offseason, we're also playing our 3rd string keeper and our best remaining midfielder, Eddie Gaven, is out with injury, as is our new starting left back. The new-look team is still in preseason and has only played a few matches together. Even if we somehow beat Real Salt Lake, we'll be facing a Central American side in mid-season form, not to mention a final against a Mexican powerhouse, who are sure to win anyway.

Still, I hope we win the first leg today at home, to give me something to cheer about. Go Crew!!

That may have been a discussion about former Tiger Ian Ashbee who – prior to toddling off to Preston – played, scored and captained us in all four divisions. For a full house, he needed only to pick up a red card in the Premier League but unfortunately failed to do so. Surely it would have been worth smacking John Terry? :D

well it really depends: real actually hasn't progressed to the CL quarter finals in a long time actually so i think the pressure will be even higher than last year since many people think this squad is actually better than in the last few years

barca at home always depends in what playing mood they get themselves.. if they start to 'klick' they are unstoppable at home, if it takes more than 60 minutes it's gonna be a real close game

personally i'm looking forward to see how Bayern will play at Inter: with both Robben and Ribery fit, thus Müller playing in his more natural free role and Schweinsteiger being able to drop back to his engine room position combined with Gomez in shape form a rather fearsome offensive line up
combined with a rather nerve wrecking defense line apart of Lahm ;)
edit: the last 5 games they scored 17 goals while receiving 6 so i suspect at least that game will provide plenty of goals

I'm not sure that's a red-card offense anymore, is it? ;)

Not sure, but you'd probably get a pat on the back from Mrs. JIH ;)

Just reading the BBC's 'Transfer Gossip' thread and a couple of posts stand out:
Striker Asamoah Gyan may have to be sold to balance Sunderland's books, says Black Cats chairman Niall Quinn.
Full story here
That's certainly something, considering they just sold Bent for £18. For one, they got a decent amount of money and two, can they afford to loose their top 2 strikers?

This one certainly had me chuckling:
Plans to introduce goal-line technology have hit a stumbling block after all 10 of the companies taking part in recent trials failed to meet the criteria set by Fifa, football's world governing body. A Fifa spokesman said the results of the tests will be discussed at a meeting on 5 March.
Full story here
I haven't read the full story, but the cynical side of me presumes these 'criteria' set by Fifa involve expensive lunches and back handers ;)

Big win but huge cost. I really hate it when we play Stoke. Ditto for Birmingham.

I'm with you on the Stoke hate. I still blame two draws with them for robbing Liverpool of the title.

The Arsenal injury woes are back with a vengeance...well, it was fun while it lasted anyway.
