What Mercedes will appeal is that the race didn't end with the safety car in front. Where the rule is unclear is that the safety car was to be brought in at the end of the lap (meaning it didn't end under a safety car) as opposed to a specific order was sent out saying the race was ending under a safety car. I would advocate a rule change to prevent this 200yd dash to the finish in the future, but similarly not punish Schumi.
Once the safety car is in, you still have to cross start/finish for the green flag before passing is allowed (that's where the restart occurs). There's nothing new about that. It just happened they got the checker instead of green, so passing became moot, and there was no restart for green flag racing. Mercedes will lose the appeal.

Nothing has changed. Schumi has no qualms about breaking rules when he can get away with it. That hasn't worked so well for him at Monaco. *cough*Rascasse*cough*

And decisions still go Ferrari's way...

;)

I guess they'll have to have the safety car actually cross the start/finish line in future...

You just have to pass the "safety car line" before overtaking anyone - it's a new rule for this year. And Ross Brawn showed images to the BBC that clearly showed green flags being waved at the same time.

I'm no fan of Schumacher but all the drivers were racing once the safety car went in... Alonso messed up and Schumacher capitalised.

OK. I wasn't aware of that.

I wonder what kind of "clarification" the FIA will issue on this one.

Nee botha!:D We know the BBC coverage can be a bit obsessive of this kind of this - well, at least Martin Brundle is. Jonathan Legard makes James Allen look like some kinda commentating genius.

There is debate, but it seems that rule is superseded by 40.13 which is why the Stewards penalized Schumacher.

Interesting year. If you'd told me before the season started that the first double winners would be Button and Webber I'd have thought you were crazy.

While Webber may not be the natural talent that Vettel and Hamilton are, he has developed himself into a top tier performer through experience, hard work, and perseverance Not to mention, staying with the same team and helping develop a championship level car. Webber deserves his success.

I'm rooting for Vettel, but would be happy to see Webber take the WDC.

I love Webbo. I just didn't think Red Bull and Renault in particular would be this good this year. Vettel will have his day. The only weakness with Vettel is that he only seems to be able to win from the front. I can't remember any real competitive overtaking move by Vettel.

If Webber can maintain his confidence and consistency I think he has a very good chance at being the WDC.

well _everybody_ thought red bull was crazy when after entering formula 1 they said "our goal is winning races and championships"

I'm not a fan of Schumachers (nor Alonso's for that matter) but Ferrari's argument seems kind of thin for this one. If they do penalise him, I think 20s is harsh.

MGP has dropped the appeal to the FIA.

There's no need to go to the expense of an appeal though when there is no potential for it to change the result back, and when the FIA have since agreed to look at the rule in question.

Not a Webber fan but he has his moments. Vettel has been unlucky this season. Webber got hot for a few races last sesason too.. we'll see if he can keep it up...

I think the penalty was too harsh also. I really feel bad for Damon Hill, he is taking all the flack for issuing the penalty.

Interesting graph I found on F1 Fanatics.

A couple of points I found interesting ...

1) Jenson and Lewis very close together - I believe they're the strongest driver line-up in F1 at the moment.

2) Sutil comprehensively outdriving Liuzzi. I fully expect Paul Di Resta to be driving at Silverstone.

Racing is so much more than qualifying especially without fuel stops. Managing tires and being kind to one's equipment are as important as ever. Yet I love the pure speed that is on display in qualifying. They should give the pole winner a point or two.

That's a nice F1 web site.

I've always thought they should award a point for pole and fastest race lap, and an extra point for the hat trick (pole, fastest lap, win).
