Hmm, you make me want to get the 15" again. . .when is your scheduled delivery date? I think the latest I can order is June 07 unless I buy one in store...Also, do you think you can post back in this thread to make sure it's runnin smooth?
Thanks.

Ordered May 26th, it's coming June 11th.

I have had my MBP i5 2.4GHz for about four days now and having 5-8 freezes per day. I also have been getting what is a "sizzling" sound coming from near the CD slot. There is no CD is use, but I was thinking maybe the processor is in that area???

Anyway, this is my new replacement after AppleCare molested my other MBP during repair visits.

Are the i7's having better luck over the i5 with freezing? Or other way around?

Thanks!

Seem to be related with switching for sure

Last few days, I have disabled to switching and only used the gfx status to manually switch.

The beachball seemed to have gone back to its rightful place at beach... have not had much issue at all... I think it's definitely graphico-software problem.

I have three 15" Core i7 MBP's. Bought the first one when they were first offered on Apples site. It's been perfect, as has number two which I purchased about 12 days later. The third one is just over a week old, it's the one I have been using 12 hours per day and pushing it hard doing some 3D design and other computational engineering work. No problems with any of these. The best new MBP's I've purchased. Having owned one of each rev, since they were first introduced years ago, I could not be happier with the Core i7 model.

Cheers... :)

Just had my first freeze a few seconds ago. I've had mine for about a month now and not one freeze. Now I tried opening safari through my MSN messenger mail check and it froze. Had to hold down the power button :( Hopefully this isn't a sign of anything...

Having the same issue here on 500gb 7200 i7 MBP. Locks up every min or so. Haven't detected a pattern yet. Apple tech said that I should do an Archive Install and that would fix the problem. Has anyone tried this? I have an appointment at the apple store tomorrow to talk with them about it.

Hi
I have the same machine as you and i'm am having the freezing issue where I play a video on you tube and it freezes sometimes completely and other times for 10 minutes and then it comes back to life. I have had 3 and need it for school. (Video/Film major) I think it might have to do with the automatic graphic switching issue of the i7 notebooks any thing I can try?:)
other then turning off the automatic graphic switch?
Here is my system info

Safari on i7 17" Macbook Pro

Mmm. Since getting my i7 17" Safari has the common issues that happen throughout each day:

- Opening a new tab can take a while and cause the beachball to appear
- Opening a new tab can cause the new window to show a scrambled display for a few seconds before going right
- Safari hangs and crashes much more in general

Got the laptop plugged into an external monitor most of the time.

Most other apps are OK most of the time Just that safari seems to be the most effected.

Anyone experienced these issues?

I just disabled the discrete switching on the energy saving pane to see if that helps.

A new data point:

I got a week old 15'' i5 and so far I did not encounter any freezes (keeping my fingers crossed) despite running the machine almost 24/7.

However, contrary to most of you guys I migrated from a mid 2007 SR Macbook Pro.

A few days ago Software Update reminded me, that due to my migration I am missing a few crucial updates, e.g.

MacBook Pro Software Update 1.3
Safari 4.0.5

I strongly suspect MacBook Pro Software Update 1.3 - although it claims to resolve "improvements for graphics stability" I suspect this update broke something big time.

Anybody out there without crashes and without macBook Pro Software Update 1.3?

Not just Macs

Before I was considering a Mac, I was looking at Core i7's from Lenovo and Sony. Then I read what people were saying in the forums and in product reviews...

Both of those brands, in laptops running 1.6 GHz Core i7's are also having freezing problems. Many people don't encounter it, but the ones who have seen freezing are naturally going to be vocal.

Intel seems to have screwed up production of the Core i7 line. I guess the i5 too. The i3 in contrast is getting very positive reviews.

If Apple were to switch to AMD, the situation will be better all around.

I've had 2 freezes since purchase a few weeks back with my 17" i5. Same deal as most - everything is locked sans the mouse cursor. I'm not planning on replacing as believe it's a driver/software issue which hopefully will be addressed in a coming software update. Fingers crossed.

UPDATE: I haven't experienced any more freezing issues over the last week. I've been using it with a mix of power and battery and also utilising auto graphics switching (which it's been doing quite a lot of). Hope it continues like this.

I had my second complete freeze today. However my last one was atleast a couple of weeks ago. I had just run the hardware test the other day too and didnt get any errors.

I was on the Nvidia card at the time and using Safari. I seem to remember have it happen while I was in safari before as well. Safari started to get kind of sluggish and them the whole system froze. Could move the mouse or anything. Finally just turned it off by holding down the power button. I didnt notice anything out of place in the system log though.

Also I do have the Macbook Pro update 1.3 installed. Maybe I should try using Chrome for a while and see if it happens again.

I think that this may be too broad of a statement.

While some are having this experience, it's not as widespread as a few forums portray it. I've also seen it reported with other brands.

At our company, in our engineering department, we have over 35 15" Core i7 MBP's and 52 Core i7 ThinkPad's and not one displays this characteristic.

I bought 3 15" Core i7' MBP's & 2 identically configured ThinkPad's, all of which are performing well. We've had the ThinkPad's since Jan. & they have loads of run time on them.

Thus it may be too soon to reach a conclusion about this.

as posted earlier

Hey was wondering if this has happend to anyone else, just got the stock i7 ,had it for about 3 weeks, and this has happened to me twice while running the iTunes visualizer minimised.

Reckon i should take it back ?

cheers

As mentioned previously, mbp kept freezing (see picture page 6) ended up taking it into the store after less than 3 weeks, turns out its the logic board, getting a new one put in, hopefully this will persuade others to get theres sorted out and not just put up with it like i did for weeks.

Update on MBP issue

Status update... Sorry for the long post.

My problems were using a Corsair P256 SSD, but the MBP shipped with an Hitachi 5400rpm drive. Genius Bar said the stress tests revealed nothing wrong with the machine and that the issue was attributed to the Corsair SSD. They said nothing further can be done unless the problems can be recreated on the shipped drive. Fair enough.

Not ready to abandon the SSD yet, I decided to do a fresh re-install (using the Apple provided disks) to observe all aspects of the machine's behavior. Here is what I discovered:

1. Installation was punctuated by long idle periods where it appeared nothing at all was happening. Perhaps this is a feature of normal Snow Leopard installs, but I thought it was strange. When installation kicked off the estimated time was listed at 35 minutes, but it sat idle for well over 20+ minutes. Does anyone know if there are checksums or other CPU/memory processes going on before files are copied?

2. Following installation but prior to any apps being installed, I looked in Console to view errors. There were a whole bunch. Some messages about 'throttling io' and quite a few more about 'set a breakpoint at CGErrorBreakpoint...' There were a bunch from mdworker and some more about 'could not find com.apple.ReportCrash.Self'. After running Software Update and rebooting, these errors continued at the same rate as before. (Safari Webkit plugin kept calling Debugger() like mad, but I understand this is a benign issue and is related to Flash?)

3. I next decided to evaluate 'Verify Disk' and 'Repair Permissions'. Repair Permissions found about 20-50 files that were wrong. It repaired all but 3 of them. I then rebooted and immediately ran both programs again. Repair Permissions again found some 10-20 files with wrong permissions. It was able to repair all but the same 3 again. Same pattern after subsequent reboots.

4. The machine felt snappy, but due to the sheer number of error logs, I figured the SSD was in fact defective. I shipped it back.

Now it was time to reinstall on the Hitachi (Apple provided) drive. Installation exhibited the same type of stalls as before. Installation took 75-80 minutes instead of the estimated 45 minutes. It sat idle for over 35min at the beginning. After installation console errors seemed to mostly go away, however. I have been using the Hitachi drive for 2 days and just experienced my first freeze -- when plugging in an external monitor after coming out of sleep. The machine locked up with a PURE BLUE SCREEN. It was completely unresponsive, requiring a hard reset. I'll continue to report back about my experiences using the shipped Hitachi drive, but quite obviously, it appears the issue isn't resolved.

Summary: error logs hint at a SATA controller problem. But plugging in an external display has now twice crashed the machine, which seems to hint at a graphics problem.

To other users: have you particularly noticed:
a) more error entries than normal in your console log?
b) file permission errors accumulate faster than normal?
c) beach balls when switching between apps once in a long while?
d) crashes sometimes happen when plugging in external monitor after coming out of sleep mode?

Hey! Another user here with exactly the same experience!

My MBP i5 2.4GHz has frozen 5-6 times during the initial 2 weeks. Today after taking it to Genius Bar, they couldn't boot it on their drive using Firewire OR usb. They even removed the regular hard drive but got the same results.

I'm leaning toward logic board problem.

Hello all,

I've been a long time lurker here but decided to share what I've done to help my situation with my new mbp 2010 i7 17inch crashing left and right. I've had my mac for about a week and with all new toys, I updated all the software right away. I noticed that after my updates, the macbook pro started to crash randomly; app becomes unresponsive, beach ball cursor, then eventually a message to hold down the power button to restart. After having the constant issue of crashes for about a few days i decided to be more proactive in my searching abilities on this and other forums. Someone, whom i forgot their name, suggested that it could be the new update about improving graphics stability causing the crashing. His reasoning was that he wasn't having any problems with his new mbp. So I decided to test it out.

Half a day later, I had my mbp re-imaged after low leveling out the drive. It has been about 12 hrs later and still have yet a crash. I've left the dynamic graphic switching on as default. Installed and used tons of apps which would cause the graphics to switch from I to N. Not a single crash. I'm hoping this is the solution and the beach balls don't come back for me. *knock on wood*.

Maybe for some of you users, you should try re-imaging your macs and avoid that system update. That could be your ticket to a crash free mac.

BTW, this is my first mac since the Mac LCII period. I've been a Windows user and Admin for the past 15 yrs. I was seriously hysterical on how often my new mbp was crashing compared to my Windows 7 system. Anyways, i hope this helps someone. Good luck to you all!

2nd freeze tonight about 30min after unplugging from a different external monitor. This time the mouse continued to move, but the Dock and everything were completely frozen. Had to hard reset.

Machine going back to Apple for a 2nd time...

Why are you bringing it back? It's 99% a software issue. Wait until Apple gets an update to us first..

Hmmmm

I've been approached to develop a particular iPhone/iPad app. Was going to go out and get a 15" MBP but it looks like I have bad timing when it comes to actually needing a Mac.

I just received my 17" MBP i7 yesterday.

I have migrated from my former MBP and been using the system a lot with no freezing problem.

I have not installed any updates as of yet but am a little reluctant to if this might trigger the problem.

With running the software update to see what would be installed, I do not see anything regarding graphics or might be related. Just Java, security updates, new printer drivers, etc.

I'm looking for opinions if I should maybe hold off on installing any of the updates since so far my system seems to be stable.
