When did the Niners late hit Roethlisberger or hit him when he was already down? I can't recall a single penalty for that. I guess I'm just a ruthless bi***, because if I had your defense, I'd be absolutely thrilled with last night's performance. :D

I guess I am going soft in my old age. I did grow up in a time in football where a lot more was allowed, of course not as much in that Clooney movie. ;)

I will be thrilled if the Niners win the SB.

There is so much hope this season all around the Bay Area but I still kind of doubt the offense. On one hand, I am glad that the Niners now have respect in these last two months and should be glad they are doing what they are versus some prior seasons when things looked really bad.

While I don't expect something big to happen to the offense, it's possible that they can come to life, especially when close to the end zone. I could only imagine how dangerous SF would be had we had a Tebow, Brady, or even Roesthlisberger.

I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone.

You can't argue with the great 11-3 record, but do you think the SF offense is doing well, and why? I attribute that record more to the amazing defense they have, being tops in getting turnovers.

Oh I agree that to get anywhere in the Playoffs, they have to score more points. You won't get away with field goal after field goal when you're playing the elite teams in the league. Their defense is tight, they get timely turnovers and their special teams has played very very well. But scoring 7 is better than scoring 3.

My Twilight Zone comment was the fact that you placed Tebow in a sentence with Tom Brady and Ben Rothlisberger (I'm sure that's spelled wrong). And you put him first!!

I feel like the madness has taken over the world.

Nothing against Alex Smith, but I would take almost any starting QB this season. Smith may be coming into his own and may get far with Niners this season and it could be a trend for things to come.

I heard the argument that he's way better than his numbers and just "learned" the system the coach put up and things will start heating up. I hope this is true. Tebow is kind of a phenomenon and cool now, but Big Ben and Brady are the long-term proven thing. Heck, since Brady is from the Bay Area, it would have been nice having him, but then again, Rodgers was a Northern California guy, too.

I get so mad when the Niners are ready to score and Smith blows it and doesn't see the open man or open men. I am so used to Montana and Young that I have become spoiled. Sometimes it's hard to watch Smith and I think many longtime 49ers fans feel the same way. For Smith to even be put in the same sentence as even Garcia (a great QB but w/o a Super Bowl), Smith would have to start scoring more. It's also possible to have an ordinary QB, as was the case with Baltimore or the Redskins (with QB Willaims) when they won it all. If the Niners go all the way, their already respected D will be on the cover of Sports Illustrated and be compared to the legendary 70's Steel Curtain. When faced with a team with a good D vs. a team with a good offense, John Madden said, "Good defense always beats good offense".

While I haven't seen a whole lot of Alex Smith, I have to say after watching the 49ers play the Steelers I wasn't too impressed with him.

Well, I think Smith is pretty much what you saw. ^^^^ (no big thrill)

With a 76 career QB rating, he's nothing to write home about but this current season is mid-80s but still far from the top QBs out there. He's blessed to be on a team with a wicked, kick butt defense. He can be on a team which gets a ring as that's not unheard of in SB games, but he's just hard to watch. I miss baseball in SF because if I don't like a pitcher any given night, right now we have at least two who are perennial Cy Young caliber pitchers and they are thrilling to watch. With Smith representing SF right now with a hopeful 49ers, I find myself get up and make coffee or tea or take the dog out for a pee when he's on the field.

Unless SF can come up with better, we have to live with Alex Smith.

Anyway. I just found out I'll be at the Dolphins/Patriots game on Christmas Eve. Please don't let it snow, lol, I've been living in SoCal too long and I can't handle the cold like I used to. ;)

oh come on. games against the fish in the snow are AWESOME. :D

but its supposed to be in the 40s all weekend.. so i dont think there will be a white christmas this year :(

Seriously. Were there actually commentators saying they'd take Tebow over Brady in the 4th quarter? That's blasphemy.

Brady, Brees, Rodgers, and Roethlisburger are in a league of their own. P. Manning would be included with them if he was healthy.

he did, however, make some good throws last night.

I could only imagine how dangerous New England would be if we had the Niners' defense. :D

I think New England is dangerous just the way they are. If they had any weaknesses or don't resemble their great 2007 squad, I think they are hitting their peak and at the right time.

It's a thing of beauty watching how easily Brady connects with Gronkowski. They are as perfect as I have seen and the only bad thing about this great combo is that Gronkowski is just coming into football where Brady is in his mid-30s and possibly in his last few years.

For Patriots fans, if they keep the greatly talented Gronkowski for another decade or more, they should hope they can one day replace Brady with a passer great enough to get it out to Gronkowski. The receiver is like a freakin' tree out there and effortlessly pulls in high passes, and once he gets them he's hard to take down. It's a player like him the team can build on for another decade of being dangerous. The Niners had the squad of Montana, Craig, and Lott in the early to mid 80s and took it well into the next decade with Rice and Young. The Pats were the dynasty in the 2000s and can go strong for the remainder of this decade if they get a few young ones with the talent of Gronkowski.

I agree with you on the peak thing, but our defense is pretty bad. The offense is just able to protect it by keeping them off the field and giving them leads to protect a lot of the time. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled we're in the driver's seat for the #1 seed, and I'm enjoying a great season thus far. The one thing I love about this team, and most New England teams, is they play smart. They're not going to commit dumb penalties, make mental mistakes, and give a game away. Heading into the playoffs where most teams have warts, I'll take that any day of the week, and see if Brady can carry us one more time.

Ha, I think you're jumping the gun there a bit. Brady turned 34 years old in August. Hardly a youngen, but he's not on his way out just yet. Especially with the way he plays, I could see him playing another 5 seasons, easy. His skills lie in his incredible decision making, ability to read defenses, and accuracy in the pocket. I think he'll be able to maintain that for awhile.

And yes, Gronk is a beast. We love him here, and we're lucky to have him.

He was at the garden last night for Bruins/Canadiens. They showed him on Garden HDX and he got one of the loudest cheers of the night. At the Bruins vs Canadiens!

When Marchand scored the goal to go up 3-1 in the 3rd, they showed a Gronk spike on the screen. It was awesome.

Anyway. I just found out I'll be at the Dolphins/Patriots game on Christmas Eve.

Have fun. I'll be taking my six year old to his first NFL game on Saturday as we go see the Titans vs. the Jaguars in Nashville. :D

My favorite nickname for him that I've heard so far is "Gronkenstein". :D

I don't think Brady will be like a Favre and play well and consistent until 39 or 40. I think in Favre's case, he should have left the first time he retired (or shortly thereafter) and stopped coming back and being inconsistent only to sparkle here and there when he was used to dazzling us all the time.

I think Brady will play another couple of years, up to maybe four years, but I think a big strong receiver like the Gronk could have a 15 year career and play until he's 36.

In those ten years or more Gronk plays with some productive football without Brady (assuming Brady goes another five full years until 39 and Gronk until he's 37), NE better get a great QB. SF started with Montana in '79 or '80 and saw him wane after about 11 or 12 years, but only to see Young play well, get the MVP in second full year as starter, get the '94 SB, and play well until 1999. It was a great two decades for San Francisco.

I think with Brady and staff from 2001 taking the team until now with great football, and into 2012, 2013, and maybe 2014 and be serious SB contenders, then a great, young NE QB being groomed for the future can take the Pats another 10 years. You can make your dynasty last nearly 20 years like the Niners did with their many division titles and five Super Bowls.

I don't want to see Brady play too far past his prime and become another Favre or Marino. He should leave on top like very few legends have the ability and smarts to do.

It's going to be a very interesting playoffs. given the right circumstances any of the top three NFC teams could run the table. The way it looks right now I give the edge to New orleans the way they are dominating, but if Green Bay can get healthy and have home field throuought they will be very very tough to beat when it counts. I'm putting a lot of their hopes on the back of the health of Jennnings and the offensive line.

The AFC just seems up in the air to me other than New England, who seem to be the dominant team. They were inconsistent early but seem to be clicking now.

I see the Super Bowl being New England vs. NewOrleans/GreenBay/SanFran depending on the NFC situation. San Fran seems to have the longest shot but if they can somehow pull out home field advantage they could pull it off (doubtful but possible).

It will be interesting....

I would love to see SF go to the Super Bowl but if against New England, they would get crushed by Brady and company.

But New Orleans and Green Bay seem so dominant right now that the real Super Bowl could be the NFC championships. I remember back between 1992 through 1994 seasons when the NFC championships was dubbed the Super Bowl. The AFC had the tough and consistent Buffalo Bills, but no match for what the NFC had back then.

We have recently been through a lopsided NFL with the AFC having had the powerful teams, but this time the best talent is in the NFC. If it's not GB, then New Orleans is the team to beat. I am no so excited about the AFC playoffs this year, but the fight in the NFC will have some real competition.
