I know it's not exactly what ya'll are experiencing, but I was having similar problems with a Samsung Monitor on my new 2011 15". I was using a Dynex (bestbuy) miniDP to HDMI at first which wasn't working, and then a MiniDP to VGA adapter, which also didn't work on the Samsung. I looked on amazon and bought a new Kanex MiniDP to HDMI adapter and I haven't had a problem since.

I thought about this as well since my cable is amazon generic, so I bought a Gefen cable and experienced the exact same issue.

I haven't tried an hdmi adaptor because my xbox is connected to that port.

all of you who are experiencing this issue, please report this to Apple to get things moving.

FACT: it's a SW issue, since W7 works 100% with same configuration

oh course i have it mainly for photo editing. i know my toys.
1920x1200 @ 60Hz.

tested on:
2011 15" MBP (not right, weird halo & pixelation)
2009 13" MB - nice and smooth

Exactly the same problem and the same toys, quite coincidence ha?

I have a 22" BenQ, and I tested with my new 15" MBP and looks so blurry, stretched and pixelated, and then I plugged my old 13" MB and looks perfect.

Hope this problem is about software and not hardware.

Damn. The software update didn't fix the problem.

I'll be calling Apple again to complain.

ouch. the spark of hope that 10.6.7 will resolve this is gone. thanks for your persistence with apple.

REPORT REPORT REPORT. we all need to complain enough to get this resolved ASAP.

Similar Question about my mac to tv

i have a high def tv and a 2011 mac.. what cable produces the highest resolution? ive been doing a lot of reading between VGA vs HDMI and i cannot conlude which to buy for my tv.. any suggestions?

Kinda off topic, but do not buy VGA if you want high resolution. VGA only allows for 480i, HDMI can give you 1080p if your TV supports it.

I've got the same issue with my HP LP2475w. However, when booting Windows my display is clear like others have reported, except it will NOT hold a steady signal. It keeps flickering and most of the time giving up and going to sleep. I completely disabled sleep on the monitor and it helped, but it still flickers occasionally which is very annoying.

The mini-DP to DVI cable works fine for me too in both OS X and Windows 7.

The update worked like a charm for me.

Otherwise theres an application who fixed the problem for me, before I installed the update.

To try if the update works I uninstalled the SwitchResX 4 before updating the Snow Leopard.

Maybe this is your solution if the problem persists after the update.

Hope you find this useful.

I've downloaded and installed SwitchResX 4, but I it still thinks my monitor is a TV. I'm still not sure how to make it not output video appropriate for a TV. (High contrast & Grainy).

10.6.7 update didn't work. same.
didn't try the SW above mentioned, don't need it and i want this fixed properly by apple SW fix.

unbelievable to deal with such in 2011 model!

what did apple responded to your phone calls ?
did you ever get to speak any engineers ?

this must be a massive problem, but probably only few % actually connect MBP to an external display and even less from that number directly via: mDP -> DP cable

I haven't called yet. Been too busy with work. But maybe tomorrow.

I'm running my Dell U2311H from a 2.3GHz 17" 2011 MBP and my images are crystal clear with no ghosting or flicker. I'm using a DVI>M-DP adapter as well.

Yeah. No problems with the DVI adaptor. The displayport to mini displayport cable issue, is Apple being too smart, detecting the displayport on the other end and and assuming that what it's connected to is a TV (some TVs have displayport connectors). This is my personal analysis, tho. Seems like you would have the same problem with hdmi.

yes, mDP ->DVI works fine. damn it! i want to avoid this cabling and just use the direct display port. big fail for apple on this

Been having a similar issue.

Today I purchased a 24" ASUS LED LCD (VE247H) and using the vga adapter hooked it up, but it won't let me use the resolution of 1920x1080, only 1400x900.

Did the usual went through the settings etc on both sides, and I got it to display at 1080 ... for about 1 minute, screen black and wouldn't work again.

After more tinkering around trying different settings and a program which would let me use custom timings (that i entered from the manual), still didn't work.

Probably going to purchase a DVI adapter, but seems a bit BS that it showed up for about a minute then went away.

Going to install windows 7 just to see if the adapter works fine there.

I wish I wasnt in norway right now because I am having the exact same issue as some AFTER the 10.6.7 update.

The sad thing is, mine was working fine, did output through the thunderbolt/minidp port to hdmi, native adapter which even did sound. It worked fine before the update on a hotel tv but then the day 10.6.7 came out I updated thinking oh wow, this will be good and make it "snappier" as people say lol...

Boy was I wrong, I get to my girls house here in norway, plug up the hdmi to her tv and I get nothing but black. The mac thinks something is connected, but wont show anything on the tv unless I pick WEIRD resolutions and even then it goes like this green/yellow/grey flicker and static.

I figure what the heck, boot into window, it at least SEMI works in windows using a weird resolution but it flickers something awful like a refresh rate issue, which I tried to change refresh rates to fix which it didnt.

I tried to hook it to her 24inch monitor that has hdmi cable and it ONLY worked in windows and then only semi, sort of like the TV.

This is aggravating being that I wont be back in the states until April and this laptop is BRAND NEW. It is the 15" 2.2ghz model with the 6750m card.

I really dont want to install OSX but since it has weird issues in Windows now (like others here), I doubt it would help to reinstall since it updated firmware or something somewhere (didnt read into that part).

The sad thing is, it works fine if I go minidp>dvi>dvi2hdmi adapter>hdmi cable>tv but I get no sound :\

2011 macbook pro thinks my display / monitor is a television TV displayport

the DELL display i have is U2410 rev.00

anyone has a more recent revision ? pull the tab by the USB port to find out.
issus using the mDP -> DP cable ?

Update to my previous post, DVI adapter arrived today. Works fine now, just issues with VGA.

I ordered a mini-displayport to HDMI adaptor from monoprice to test with and it also works perfectly fine, just like the DVI adaptor. So far my issue is only with the mini-displayport to displayport. I'm getting a new monitor at work soon that will also have a displayport input, so I'll finally be able to test with a 2nd monitor, but I expect the exact same results.

I'm not sure what to make of this, but my new HP LA2405wg that just arrived seems to have no issues using the same mini-displayport to displayport cable that I used with my HP LP2475w.

So same MacBook Pro, same cable, both 24" HP monitors, one works fine and the other doesn't, but does work fine with my desktop PC with a displayport to displayport cable.
