Whitmarsh says there should be two US Grand Prixs

link

Autosport said:
"America doesn't need us, but we need to conquer it," said Whitmarsh. "In the past we didn't do enough. I think we need to go there; maybe we need two races per year ... We've got Texas and I hope it's going to be a very successful race, but the natural place for us is east coast/west coast," he said. "There's a great opportunity there, and we've really got to make sure of it.

"I think there should be two races, it's a big enough and important enough market that we should be over there. Long Beach, and around New York, those are the places where we can really create an interest in Formula 1."

What do people think? I think two US races seems a good idea, but even Indy Car Racing seems to be struggling in the US. Maybe they need to restart that USF1 concept again, try and get Dario Franchitti or Dan Wheldon in a competitive car.

I think the Glen is the East is still a good choice.

I've been to F1 there, and it's nice, being in the country and all.

And there you have it, in a nut-shell. Americans need a home-team to root for.

There are plenty of American "sportsmen" with deep pockets.

Maybe get Jay Leno to unbuckle the wallet. ;)

How about this then: I hear Andretti's team has been struggling in recent years. So, you get Chad Hurley (Google, investor in US F1) and start Android Andretti Ford, in a white car with blue and red trim. Justin Wilson and Marco Andretti driving. Tell me that doesn't sound good. :D

Long Beach seems a logical place to hold a US Grand Prix - West. It held that specific event in the past and even during the Open Wheel Split years, CART didn't seem to have a problem making Long Beach work and it now hosts ALMS, as well.

Heck, we could have "Long Beach Week" where one weekend (Friday-Sunday) they run IndyCar and ALMS (might raise the prestige of the event enough to get Peugeot and Audi to attend) and the following weekend they do GP2 and F1. Add the support races and it would be a heck of a ticket.

I could see such an event appealing to out-of-towners since during the Monday-Thursday between the two weekends they could visit the other SoCal attractions and theme parks.

I will be at Silverstone this coming weekend for the Grand Prix. Hopefully I will get some interesting photos to share here.

Got a grandstand seat in the Village B stand, overlooking the new complex area.

I finally got a chance to finish watching the race...and wow I must say I loved to see Hamiltons tactic to keep the faster Webber behind him. Let Webber pass in the corner, then tuck in behind to pass on the straight... Same thing one does in the RidgeRacer series since rubberbanding is implemented in game. I just LOVED seeing him being cheeky like that.

It wasn't a tactic - if you watch the race he went wide accidentally. He cut underneath Webber on the straight as he was going slower from the corner before. Regardless it was great drive by Hamilton.

Gah. Worst news ever... BBC/Sky Sports to "share" rights to F1 from 2012.

Share meaning Sky get all the practices, qualifying and races, BBC get to show half the races and qualifying + highlights.

Source.

Yeah heard it on Radio1 this morning, poor Jake. He sounded choked! :(
Back to watching F1 with advertising breaks :'(

As for the weekend, Im hoping for a McLaren poidum. I hope Jenson does well because its his 200th race. Id like to see...

1. Lewis Hamilton
2. Jenson Button
3. Seb Vettle
